Best way to display maintenence mode on a website?
-
I have a website with lots of traffic and sometimes the backends fail. I want to use lighttpd to show that the website is under mantenence and should be back up shortly.
I was thinking of using Soft 503 errors or doing a 302 for every page to /maintenance.html.
What would you do (besides fixing the backends, we are already doing that :P) to avoid hurting your SEO efforts?
Thanks in advance
Mariano

The Google Webmaster Central blog advises to use a 503 for planned downtown (and bandwidth-overruns) in their January 2011 post at http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2011/01/how-to-deal-with-planned-site-downtime.html.

I asked this question to Jane Copeland a few months ago and her answer was to return a 503 error code, which sends a signal that your site is temporarily unavailable to the search engines.

Permalink structure of an excising website
Hey everyone, We have a website - a business directory. It is a large directory with lots of B2B listings. So currently our URL structure for the categories look like this: dispensarystack.com/category/professional-services/ **We want to rank for the KW "dispensary professional services". ** Is it enough that we have the word dispensary in our brand name and in this way in the URL structure or is it better to make the slug: **dispensarystack.com/category/**dispensary-professional-services/ Or even closer to the root of the website: **dispensarystack.com/**dispensary-professional-services/ Thank you for your time and answers!

Best way to absorb discontinued brand/domain?
Our parent company is looking to absorb the domain of a brand we are discontinuing. The domain we want to absorb has a thousands of blog posts from 2010 onward. Much of the content is old but still high-converting. We would like to keep as much of the potential traffic as possible, but we don't want the parent website to become too large or lose credibility with too many 301 redirects. Any advice on the best way to do this?

What is the best way to deal with an event calendar
I have an event calendar that has multiple repeating items into the future. They are classes that typically all have the same titles but will occasionally have different information. I don't know what is the best way to deal with them and am open to suggestions. Currently Moz anayltics is showing multiple errors (duplicate page titles, descriptions and overly dynamic urls). I'm assuming that it's showing duplicate elements way into the future. I thought of having the calendar no followed at all but the content for the classes seems valuable. Thanks,

As an agency, what is the best way to handle being the webmaster and hosting provider for several sites (some of which are in the same industry and have natural links to each other)?
We are an agency that builds and hosts websites for several companies (some of which happen to be in the same industry - and therefore naturally link to each other - we do not dictate). In regards to handling their domain registrations, webmaster tools account, google analytics account, and servers, what is the best practice to avoid Google thinking that these companies are affilliated? Even though they aren't affiliated, we are afraid that us being the "webmaster" of these sites and having shared servers for them that we may be affecting them.

Best Joomla SEO Extensions?
My website is a Joomla based website. My designer is good, but I don't think he knows that much about SEO . . . so I doubt if he added any extensions that can assist with SEO. I assume there are some good ones that can help my site. Does anyone know what/which Joomla extensions are must haves?
