Remove Links or 301
-
Howdy Guys,
Our main site has been hit pretty hard by penguin and we are just wondering what steps we should now take.
For the past 2 months we have been working through our back link profile removing spammy / un-natural links, we have documented everything in a spreadsheet...
We recently submitted a reconsideration request to Google and they have now responded saying we still have bad links.
I'm just wondering would be it easier just to 301 redirect our site to another TLD we have for our main site?
Or
Do we keep working through our links 1 by 1 and removing them?
Has anyone had any success in 301ing?
Thanks,
Scott

Scott,
Digging out here and wondered if you would share a little more information.
Did you ever receive one of Googles letters claiming you had unnatural links?
Do you have any search terms on Google? Or is it across the board every search term 50+?
How long did it take Google to reply to the reinclusion request?
Comment about the WP, I wonder if there any recovery stories other than the WordPress one, curious that one jumped back up but of course it had national attention. Google could have flagged them in a positive way.

Yep, this is really worth a read:

These guys were kind of collateral damage, a great site, but got some kind of penalty due to the anchor text from WordPress templates.
They managed to nuke a big percentage of the links in one hit via a single multi user WordPress installation and bang, they were back at the first refresh.
Don't 301 though, that is not going to help!
Keep me posted mate, would really like to hear how you are getting on.
Cheers!

Hi Marcus,
Thanks for the reply matey - I'm not looking for an easy option It was just what someone has suggested to us.
I'm going to continue removing the links and see what happens on the next refresh.
Has anyone seen there rankings shoot back to what they were before the penalty...

Don't 301 it, that is not going to help and you are affectively just passing those bad links along to the new domain. I hate to say it, but you are looking for an easy option and there is not one, you just need to clean up that link profile as much as possible and illustrate the blood, sweat and tears you have gone through to do so.

After you remove a 301 redirect that Google has processed, will the new URL retain any of the link equity from the old URL?
Lets say you 301 redirect URL A to URL B, and URL A has some backlinks from other sites. Say you left the 301 redirect in place for a year, and Google had already replaced the old URL with the new URL in the SERPs, would the new URL (B) retain some of the link equity from URL A after the 301 redirect was removed, or does the redirect have to remain in place forever?

Trailing slash on the main website - do i need a 301 ? Is my 301 correct?
Hello, Im a bit confused. If i use a tool like majestic to look at my website links, www.example.com and www.example.com**/ have huge difference in their authority.** Do i need to make a 301 redirect to the site with the splash or not? Will google itself understand that they are my main site? Is this the "http://www.website.com.com/"/> correct canonical? Meaning it has trailing splash and also RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.example.com [NC]

Will doing a 301 redirect for one domain to another give the latter domain the formers links?
I have some websites that I built a few years ago that are still in existence, but I no longer have access to the sites as they weren't hosted by myself. These sites all carry a "Designed by Me" text on the footer with a link to my (now old) website. I have since done 301 redirects on the domain names that are used in the footers of these sites so they link directly to my new site. However, will these websites now show up on Google Webmasters for example as external links to my site?

Links below linking (not sitelinks)
Hi All, Please can you let me know the name and / or point me at an article / blog / directory on how best to achieve additional links under a search engine listing (I don't mean site links) e.g. I do a search for 'home insurance' on Google.co.uk and under the listing for Compare the Market it has - home insurance, building insurance and landlords insurance. Thanks for your help!

Cross links between sites
hi, We have several ecommerce sites and we cross linked 3 of them by mistake. We realize that the sites were linked through WMT, We have shut down 2 of the sites about 2 months ago, but WMT still shows the links coming from those 2 sites. how do we make sure that google will see the sites are shut down. Is there a better of way resolving this issue. We are no longer using those sites, so do not need them to be active. whats the best solution to show google that the links are no longer there. Crawler shows that it was able to crawl the site 45 days after it is shut down. thanks nick

Why would a link shown on OSE appear differently than the page containing the link?
I recently traded links with a site that I will call www.example.com When I used open site explorer to check the link it came back with a different page authority as www.example.com/index.htm yet the link does appear on the www.example.com page. Why would this be?
