Apache redirects
-
Hey all
I'm handling some redirects and am fuzzy with Apache server stuff. I'm redirecting dynamic URLs and the only thing that's changing is the new domain. I have implemented this in the server file (thus far unsuccessfully):
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^.oldsite.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.)$ http://www.newsite.com/$ [L,R=301]Any ideas on what I can change to make it work? For those who are more familiar I know I'm missing something simple. Thanks as always!

Perhaps you should simply say if it is NOT the new site, then redirect to the new site, rather than if it IS the old site, then redirect to the new site...
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.newsite.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.newsite.com/$ [L,R=301]This way you also handle the non-www to www redirect.
There is about an 80% chance something is wrong in that code, but let's pretend it is perfect. k thx.

I have a redirect chain being flagged in Moz, this is the first time I have come across this, and Im convinced its causing an issue, the site is performing very badly. I have attached screen grabs of the redirect chain. and the site is cotswold flat roofing Is this redirect chain causing me an issue, and what is the best practice for getting it fixed or removed, the site currenly does not even show up in Google even when searching for its won brand, I removed an x robot noindex a week ago, and now the only issue that I can see is this redirect chain 6pOpGNU

Trash Domain Or Redirect it (unmaintained)
We have an old website with an old domain that has not been maintained for a few years; it now has a DA of 14 and a spam score of 24%. Our current domain (same business) within a few years has a domain authority of 21 and page authority 29 spam score 1%. (Yes, this domain should have been redirected from the get-go) The question is what do you do with it now? Toss it. Or redirect it. That domain has existed for years but still not sure what its value is from an SEO perspective. I would love to hear your feedback. Is there any benefit to redirect the old domain to the current domain. Or is it a negative and what impact?

301 Redirects Showing As 307 Redirects
Hi, Our clients are adamant that they have set up 301 permanent redirects on their websites, but when we check using Screaming Frog and various online HTTP status code checkers they are showing as 307 temporary redirects. Examples;

http://www.lifestylelifts.co.uk/home-lifts/
http://www.terrylifts.co.uk/ Again, the client says they are seeing 301 redirects. Why are we seeing 307's? Who is right? Very puzzling, any theories would be very much appreciated 🙂 Thanks in advance. Lee.0 -
Do I need Redirects?
I've recently changed my old static website to a WordPress one. I'd like to know what do do (if anything) about my old links. For example a page on my old site was: www.iainmoran.com/corporate-magician.html - now I'm using WordPress, the url is:
Technical SEO | | iainmoran
www.iainmoran.com/corporate-magician/ My question is, do I need to set up redirects on these old pages (which no longer exist or will Google eventually re-crawl my site and update the links themselves? I'm using the Yoast SEO Plugin for WP and it creates a sitemap, which of course will have my new pages on. But don't want Google to penalise me for having broken links, etc. Many thanks, Iain.0 -
Enable cookies temporary redirect
We have a ton of warnings - over 10 k - that are paths that SEOMOZ is getting redirected to an enable cookies page - but anyone with cookies enabled is not. Does this matter?

Redirecting over-optimised pages
Hi One of my clients websites was affected by Penguin and due to no 'bad link' messages, and nothing really obvious from the backlink profile, I put it down to over-optimisation on the site. I noticed a lot of spammy pages and duplicate content, and submitted recommendations to have these fixed. They dragged their heels for a while and eventually put in plans for a new site (which was happening anyway), but its taken quite a while and is only just going live in a couple of weeks. My question is, should I redirect the URLs of the previously over-optimised pages? Obviously the new pages are nice and clean and from what I can tell there are no bad links pointing to the URLs, so is this an acceptable practice? Will Google notice this and remove the penalty? Thanks

Not sure which URL to use for 301 redirect
A client has new website design completed by another developer, was launched in April of this year. No 301 redirect was set up so duplicate content is an issue. Client has had a website with same domain name for about 10 years, but has not had any SEO work completed before or since his new site design. For non-www there are 6 referring links - 1 considered to have authority, for www there are also 6 but 3 considered to have authority. More links seem to coming from www than non-www. But for one of the clients keywords they are ranked #1 for their area and that links to their non-www address. And even though no redirects set up by developer, non-www has had far more visits according to Google Analytics. So many basics that still need to be done for site: no meta-descriptions on any page, H1 and page titles could use keywords, call to action moved above fold, etc. Considering this is a new site, and new SEO work and many more inbound links needed, does it matter which address I redirect to? _Cindy Barnard

301 Redirects - SEO Benefit?
Hello, Years ago, our company started out as a Yahoo store. We've since moved onto another website with its own shopping cart but since the Yahoo store is almost 10 years old, there's a lot of history there and it still exists with the occasional order. We currently use it for reputation management purposes with links to our real ecommerce site but we're thinking of just redirecting the Yahoo store to our ecommerce site. Is there any SEO benefit in doing this? We were also kind of penalized by Panda. Would this help us out at all (the descriptions on both sites could be considered duplicate content).
