Looking for re-assurance on this one: Sitemap approach for multi-subdomains
-
Hi All:
Just looking for a bit of "yeah it'll be fine" reassurance on this before we go ahead and implement:
We've got a main accommodation listing website under www.* and a separate travel content site using a completely different platform on blog.* (same domain - diffn't sub-domain). We pull in snippets of content from blog.* > www.* using a feed and we have cross-links going both ways, e.g. links to find accommodation in blog articles and links to blog articles from accommodation listings.
Look-and-feel wise they're fully integrated. The blog.* site is a tab under the main nav.
What i'd like to do is get Google (and others) to view this whole thing as one site - and attribute any SEO benefit of content on blog.* pages to the www.* domain. Make sense?
So, done a bit of reading - and here's what i've come up with:
- Seperate sitemaps for each, both located in the root of www site
- robots.txt in root of www site to have single sitemap entry:
sitemap : www.example.com/sitemap-www
- robots.txt in root of blog site to have single sitemap entry:
sitemap: www.example.com/sitemap-blog
- Submit both sitemaps to Webmaster tools.
Does this sound reasonable? Any better approaches? Anything I'm missing?
All input appreciated!

Thanks Ben. We'll look to do this in the future.
Maybe with a virtual directory or something.
Cheers!

If you are looking for Google to view the site as a whole I would consider moving the subdomain to a subfolder. Especially if the subdomain is integrated into the navigation it makes sense to merge them.
I don't think a sitemap is going to have too much of an effect on the way Google handles the subdomain.

Seo consulting service for just one site ?
I make a living off my site, so everytime I have to make a critical decision on SEO, I have a lot of fear that I could make things worse and lose everything. I can find solutions here and google, but there always a lot of different opinions, so I was thinking in hiring someone to pick his brain and do what he/she thinks its best in my case. What do you guys think about this ? Do you have someone to recommend ? That you see his work with good results ? I have a wordpress blog (micro businnes), so my budget is not big.

Lost homepage rankings for one day
We had a strange thing happen to our website. We have a website that ranks for top keywords for some years. Last week we lost alle of our rankings for one day. The strange thing was, that the rankings were only lost on the homepage, the homepage didnt rank anymore. Even when i googled for 'homepage.com' google showed 'homepage.com/page' and not the homepage. After some reading i checked for the following: no-index sources in the source code - but no results checked for http respons code - 200 ok status checked for downtime in pingdom - no downtime With no rankings on the homepage i was losing 90% of the traffic, i went to GWT and did a fetch as google request, the website looked okay. After that i request a new indexation request. After this the website was back in google with all the old rankings. But what has happend, is still a question for me. Can this be an hack or a wordpress problem or is this realtime penguin with a hit. I also read things about Google flux, but it didnt happen before and it was just the homepage, with no index at all. What happend?

Restructure of multi-region and multi-lingual site?
I've read through a lot of material to this point on the subject which has been helpful. In making a major decision like this I'd love another set(s) of eyes on this. A lot of the material I read is pretty dated. Thanks for your help! Background: Company is currently maintaining the following sites, some in multiple languages: company.com, company.us, company.de, company.fr, etc. (12 ccTLDs, some multi-lingual). Each site represents a physical office/distributorship in each location. Each ccTLD site (and pages) include both duplicate, and unique, localized content (intermixed). Each country office will be producing content for their ccTLD, though some content will be duplicated from the .com. In essence, there is a .com corporate site template and the ccTLDs will be customized but include a lot of the content on the .com corporate multi-lingual site. Some of the ccTLDs rank ok, some don't, all SEO strategy to date has been implemented by independent marketing companies in each country. I am working on a centralized SEO strategic approach. Approach: My initial thought was to leverage the .com domain internationally by consolidating all ccTLDs within the .com site using sub-directories. Since some regional sites are also multi-lingual, the consolidated site structure might look like this... company.com/en-us/, company.com/en-de/, company.com/de-de/, company.com/en-fr/, company.com/fr-fr/. This would allow for location-specific content to be presented in multiple languages. When I learned how much customization/localization will need to be done (each country maintaining its own blog, etc), and started evaluating things like the length of the urls for marketing purposes, the necessity to have multiple users accessing certain sections of the site, and some insight that the ccTLDs will likely rank better than the consolidated .com, research of other sites (amazon.com has ccTLDs for each country). I began to reconsider my initial strategy, and re-evaluate a .com corporate site in mult-languages with regional ccTLDs with a blend of duplicate and unique content instead. Beyond business needs, my primary concern is preventing duplicate content. I can already see issues arising between the .com corporate multi-lingual site in French, for instance, and the company.fr regional site that would contain some of the same corporate content, and a lot of its own unique localized content. I am imaging the corporate .com actually having to defer to the ccTLDs via rel=canonical to avoid duplicate content issues which doesn't seem to natural (maybe just in the case where the .com corporate site would use rel=canonical to the .us office site) I've had a lot of success consolidating sites and working to build a single, strong, trusted, authoritative domain vs. having to build that same authority, in this case, a dozen times with all the ccTLDs. I am not sure if the ability to leverage a single .com multi-regional/lingual site outweighs the benefit of a ccTLD for a site that operates in a single country. What do you think? What solution would you recommend, all things considered? Please let me know if I am missing something. I enjoyed the challenge of weighing all the factors and am at a point where I could really use some feedback from colleagues. The developers are building the site(s) in Drupal. Thanks!

Two websites to merge into one - one has already been migrated - what about the second?
Hiya Mozzers, I have just been checking a website for duplication issues (this is a new website - they have just migrated across from old website to this new "main website"), and I found a wordpress blog on a different URL, duplicating the "main website"'s blog. Should I just close down this wordpress blog, 301 redirecting from the wordpress blog to the "main website"'s blog (equivalent blog posts to equivalent blog posts, with other indexed non-specific pages 301 redirected to "main website"'s blog homepage)? Thanks in advance for your help.

Canonical URLs and Sitemaps
We are using canonical link tags for product pages in a scenario where the URLs on the site contain category names, and the canonical URL points to a URL which does not contain the category names. So, the product page on the site is like www.example.com/clothes/skirts/skater-skirt-12345, and also like www.example.com/sale/clearance/skater-skirt-12345 in another category. And on both of these pages, the canonical link tag references a 3rd URL like www.example.com/skater-skirt-12345. This 3rd URL, used in the canonical link tag is a valid page, and displays the same content as the other two versions, but there are no actual links to this generic version anywhere on the site (nor external). Questions: 1. Does the generic URL referenced in the canonical link also need to be included as on-page links somewhere in the crawled navigation of the site, or is it okay to be just a valid URL not linked anywhere except for the canonical tags? 2. In our sitemap, is it okay to reference the non-canonical URLs, or does the sitemap have to reference only the canonical URL? In our case, the sitemap points to yet a 3rd variation of the URL, like www.example.com/product.jsp?productID=12345. This page retrieves the same content as the others, and includes a canonical link tag back to www.example.com/skater-skirt-12345. Is this a valid approach, or should we revise the sitemap to point to either the category-specific links or the canonical links?

I wanted to know how efficient using a subdomain is, taking in consideration all the updates Google has made lately. I am looking to use a subdomain for a well branded website for a niche specific part of their website. The subdomain will end-up having more than 100 pages. I'd like to see in what cases do you guys recommend using a subdomain? How to get the same benefit out of a subdomain as i am getting from the actual main domain?
