E-Commerce product pages that have multiple skus with unique pages.

Hey Guys,
With the recent farm/panda update from google i'm at a cross roads as to how I should optimize product pages for a project i'm working on for a client. My client sells tires and one particular tire brand can have up to 15 models and each model can have up to 30 sizes. IE: 'Michelin Pilot Sport Cup' comes in 15 different sizes. Each size will have it's unique product page and description bringing me to my question. Should I use the same description on every size? I do plan on writting unique content for each tire model however i'm not sure if I should do it for every size. After all the tire model description is the same for every size, each size doesn't carry any unique characteristics that I can describe.
Thanks in advance!

this is always not the best answer. I've seen cases where the click has too many pages and it takes a long time to get to a product. A lot of the products too are similar so I combined a lot of parts together and hes getting 67% higher ctr and 3x more sales and phone calls.

Agreed. You now have your work cut out for you Jose.
-
If that's the case Jose, then unique content is key.
-
Thanks for your feedback guys! In reply to both of you, it is very common for a prospect to search for the size followed by the tire model IE: 275/60/15 BFGoodridge T/A. If I have unique pages per size I can optimize the page title to automatically use the size followed by tire brand followed by tire model. This way I have greater chances of the end user finding me. My other idea was to create size specific content that I can use above and below the model specific text.

Jose,
I'm curious to understand why you need a separate unique page for each size. Do that many people search for particular tire sizes as compared to broader tire related phrases? Personally I'd think that listing all tire sizes on a single page would be more user friendly. And it would allow for even more content on each model's page.
The other side of that reasoning is having hundreds of size specific pages that have no unique content other than the size (name for all intents and purposes) would classify those pages as thin content and less likely to have those pages rank especially given that you're unlikely to get unique quality inbound links pointing to most of those.
So my recommendation would be to focus on building up those model pages and not going with unique size pages. Or, alternately, finding ways to creatively generate a couple paragraphs of truly unique content for every size page in the system. Anything less and it's duplicate content.

I would suggest that for each model you create different unique content on the page (as each model should have different features and variants). Now instead of adding a new page for each size of each model, have a drop down box (on the model's page) that lets you select the size, so the user can instantly see the sizes available for the model and then you don't have to scramble to generate new content for each size (which would be difficult). This is a win-win situation for the user and for the client. Hope that helps.

Canonicalising a product with multiple variants
I am working with an ecommerce site and have encountered an issue I haven't come across before and would appreciate some advice on how to proceed. There are multiple variation products with one master product and then up to 20 or 30 variant products, the variation could be colour, size or both. The site has been set up to canonicalise all the variations to the master variant product, which I understand to be best practice. But, this is where the issue occurs, the master variant product URL 302 redirects to one of the variant product URLs. Example below. My question is, is this harmful to our SEO efforts? Would be be best to canonicalise to a preferred colour or size variation? EXAMPLE: Master variant product: www.example.co.uk/primary-category/product-123 Seeing this product on the page and clicking will 302 redirect to www.example/co.uk/primiary-category/product-123/colour-456 On page www.example/co.uk/primiary-category/product-123/colour-456 the canonical tag is www.example.co.uk/primary-category/product-123 Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Canonical in Shop Areas of an E-commerce Site. When and Where?
Hi Guys. A quick one about duplicate content... So we have a lot of pages that are very similar on our site, but are actually different products. e.g) Our Fortnight view refills and our week to view refills. Our MOZ report defines this as duplicate content. Question: Would a canonical tag be the way to go to 'remove' this duplicate content? And if so, which page should it point back to? Just picking one of the products? Or the higher level Landing page? Many thanks in advance... Isaac.

Good sources of information for product page SEO from a manufacturers perspective
I'm working with a manufacturer whose product copy is used by many many many retailers online. This copy is typically exactly the same or very similar to their own brand website. We're ok with that as most of the time our brand website is seen as the source of the information. Retailers, however, aren't so ok. Understandably they want unique product description content but we can't supply that for every retailer. So I want to acknowledge that whilst unique product copy is important there are other factors that they should consider such as site usability, the frequency and recency or ratings/reviews, etc. I've skimmed through google and reviewed the message boards and can see a number of posts touching on this topic but I wonder if anyone can recommend good sources or care to share their insights? Thanks in advance

No product descriptions
Hi all, Wondering if I could get the opinions from other Moz user's on this issue please... A client is building a new online store, it is in the flooring niche, using the drop shipping model. The plan is to launch the site with about 1,000 products and then add more as we go. All good so far (the site is magento based) However, the issue we are facing is down to product descriptions. The client needs to get the site up and running asap to start generating sales but the wholesaler has not provided any product description information for the products - save the size, shape and colour. Can anyone foresee a major issue in launching the website with no product descriptions, from a seo point of view, and then adding the descriptions as we go. Have been trying to establish what Google defines as being a thin site and all the information on the topic is suggesting it is more due to duplicate content where, for example, retailers are all still using the default manufacturer description or have spun the content. I cannot find much which would suggest that product pages missing a description would classify as thing. I am happy to be corrected though. I accept that it would be easier to rank with a good product description but the client is a two person business and it is pretty hard to find things to say about 1,000 different kinds of rugs! Any thoughts would be most welcome please. Thanks.

Product Landing page- Key Words used too often.
Hi There to everyone. I'm very new at SEO so I appreciate all the help I can get! Question: on my e-commerce website, one heading is "USB KEYS", then when you click on that, you get a page full of products with the word "USB KEYS" on the title, such as "4gig black USB KEY".. So then I do the MOZ Page grader and get a low score because on the product landing page it thinks I've used the word "USB KEYS" too much, like 72 times,.. But I have to use it- Cause it has to be in the product title! Is this ok!? thanks

Duplicate Home Page
Hi, I have a question around best practise on duplicate home pages. The /index.aspx page is showing up as a top referrer in my analytics. I have the rel=canonical tag implemented for the www.mysite.com on both pages. Do I need to 301 the /index.aspx to the mysite.com? I have a lot of links pointing to the /index.aspx (half of those are coming from the mysite.com). www.mysite.com/index.aspx www.mysite.com Many thanks Jon

Page title structure?
From an SEO and user perspective what structure do you recommend for page titles. For example (given that they shouldn't ideally be more than 70 characters) :- Keywords (maybe two or three) | Company Name | more keywords I understood the best place for the company name was about second place. Is this now the considered view taking into consideration 'branding' which has been flagged up as the way forward. Keywords are separated by the vertical bar | - any thoughts? For 'house keeping' pages such as Privacy Policy - should this be optmised or simply stated as 'privacy policy' Thanks
