How do I combat content theft?
-
A new site popped up that has completely replicated a site own by my client. This site is literally a copycat, scraped all the content, and copied the design down to the colors.
I've already reported the site to the hosting provider and filled a spam report on Google. I noticed that the author changed some of the text, and internal links so that they don't link to our site anymore. Some of these were missed.
I'm also going to take a couple preventative actions like change stuff in .htaccess, but that doesn't help me now, just in case it happens again in the future.
I'm wondering what else i can or should be doing?

One of our sites has be quite well scraped already, and because we use absolute linking throughout the site we are getting a few links from the sites in question. I don't anticipate the links being worth a great deal but they may be helpful.
Provided that you're using absolute linking and your content is getting crawled first it shouldn't be a problem.
People will always copy good content, and it probably takes less time for them to scrape and set a site up than it does for you to do do something about it.

Hi Pashmina!
The best recommendation would be to Initiate a DMCA Take-down procedure. Essentially it's filing a notice with their host that the site is in violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which should get their host to take action more readily than simply contacting them. It says "we're serious and will pursue this". The same notice should go to the site owner if you can get valid contact info for them. You can read about this more and see a sample notice here http://ipwatchdog.com/2009/07/06/sample-dmca-take-down-letter/id=4501/
Note that the infringing party does not have to have a 100% complete copy - only that they go beyond "fair use" of a minor portion of content. If we're talking about major swaths of content, look and feel, it's pretty cut and dried.
Beyond that, it's really best to contact an attorney who specializes in digital law.
For individual articles, that's generally much more challenging because there's so much scraping going on. My take on it and now common thinking within the industry by some notable people is it's not worth going after sites that scrape when those sites scrape from multiple sources. They're usually impossible to find valid contact info on, and Google does a "fair" job at discerning origin source.
To help in that, Google's got their new article origin tag, but the best thing to do is to ensure content links to other pages within the site (most scrapers fail to strip that out), and include a standard paragraph at the closing of every page's content about the content being original information located on Domain.com (without making it a link so it's harder for scrapers to strip out). Or even better, also including the company name.
And finally, theory has it that scraper links might actually not be a bad thing for those scrapers that leave them in, since a lot of scraper content actually does rank

Moving content from 1 site to another
Hi Moz'ers I have recently taken over the company I work for (www.prendas.co.uk) and want to migrate approx 200 pages from my hobby site to my company's eCommernce website on Shopify Plus. The content (text/photos) are highly relevant to the company, is unique & written by me and will hopefully generate some sales. I have a plan to gradually move them all over (I intend on doing 2-5/day) into a specific blog section to house them all. I'll then create an Apache perm. redirect to the old site too. Not ranking - Scarped content
Hi, I have a problem with a website, that never compe up with before. The website is: https://www.enallaktikidrasi.com It has a bunch of excellent articles, good enough on-page SEO and a medium backlink profile. However, it is ranking just for very very few keywords. The major problem is that there are original articles that searched by their title won't appear in top100 results but they will appear in other websites that scapre them (even if they give a backlink to our original article!) Also, the website has good rankings in Bing and Yahoo but not in Google. There are keywords ranking in #1 in Bing but nowhere in top10 pages in Google.... I am guessing for 3 issues: 1. Majestic shows a very low trust score (just 13). However, the website has not got any kind of penalty in the last 3 years. 2. There are many scarpers. The odd is that scarpers with no real value outrank our content. (Scarpers with almost zero backlink profile) 3. We ran Sucuri on website as there were a large bots attack. Is there a correlation between it bots attack and Google results? (but why not in Bing and Yahoo too?) It seems like Google underestimates the website when indexing websites for some reason. Moreover, some of the articles are really the best around but the keywords they are targeted are not either within the 30 first pages... Any help?? Thanks..

Content is king, is it okay if its in a widget?
My home page for my site, isn't really a home page, not sure how to describe that. We have additional pages that are stand alone pages which we work on and add content too, just not for the main page. So I have put my 300 words in a widget on the front page (which actually shows up on all the page being a widget. Is that good for SEO, or should it be in the body of a page? Thanks!

404 and Duplicate Content.
I just submitted my first campaign. And it's coming up with a LOT of errors. Many of them I feel are out of my control as we use a CMS for RV dealerships. But I have a couple of questions. I got a 404 error and SEO Moz tells me the link, but won't tell me where that link originated from, so I don't know where to go to fix it. I also got a lot of duplicate content, and it seems a lot of them are coming from "tags" on my blog. Is that something I should be concerned about? I will have a lot more question probably as I'm new to using this tool Thanks for the responses! -Brandon here is my site: floridaoutdoorsrv.com I welcome any advice or input!

Sharing the same content on every page
As an ecommerce site, one of the tabs on the product description is filled with delivery information. This tab is populated the same way on every product page. I think this is contributing to an increased score on my pages similarity to each other. Is there a way to obscure this info for se's and is it worthwhile doing so?
