Large block of several thousand words on homepage of Ecommerce site - opinions?
-
I work for a local SEO company who are continually adding content to the home page of clients websites. While i do agree that it is a good idea to add content to the home page and to link to inner pages, the home page of several clients exceeds 6,000 or more words.
Every month, an article based on a brand or category (which already has its own page which is optimised with an article) is added to the home page with links to inner pages. I have stressed that it is not a good idea to have so much content on the home page, and even more so that it shouldn't target all the same keywords.
I have pointed out that many of the brand and category pages do not rank well for their keywords, whereas in most cases it is the home page which is ranking instead, which i have suggested this is because the home page is too well optimised for those keywords.
What are your opinions on this? Are you for or against continually adding content (which already has its own designated page) to the home page of an Ecommerce website?
I should also add that this content is within a drop down div box at the footer on some sites and just above the footer on other sites. The category and brand pages also have drop down divs with an article just below the header.

Right okay. Well then I'd suggest you move each of the blocks from the home page to a new page.
Then look at the calls to action on the new pages to encourage click-throughs to products. Or look at adding links/photos to products that relate to the topic being discussed. Anything you write on the site should be a standalone piece of content, but would presumably, in one form or other, relate to what's being sold on the site. That being the case, the traffic coming to the articles will be people interested in the type of things being sold, so you should be able to encourage the click-through to products.
Yes, you will get some non-converting traffic, but by putting each one on a separate page and working on the SEO of each, you can broaden your scope for MORE traffic, which you can then encourage to buy.
The home page is not the place for everything and will be restricting what you can achieve in traffic terms.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by 'lower level' pages, but we are able to edit the home page to add a small piece of text such as 'latest products'/'latest brands' etc.
We can add extra pages of content (that aren't product or brand pages) but don't as the company i work for feels that adding a blog or article section will bring in non-converting traffic from search engines, thus the only non-product oriented pages are the basics such as 'contact us', 'about us', 'shopping cart' etc.
-
Can you create a 'lower level' pages for each 'article' (and then manually edit the home page for 'latest' bits) or is the system quite restrictive - e.g. unless you add a new product or brand, you can't add a page?
-
Thank you Martin,
The websites are Ecommerce stores so the focus isn't on articles, but the articles are there on each category / brand page in order for search engines to relate the pages to a few keywords, so there's isn't exactly a 'latest posts' or similar feature we can make use of.
All of the pages on the site already have content, but I agree that interlinking between the pages is a good idea, although it's not very scalable as the main focus is on brand pages (so the majority of content for brands will not mention other brand names, thus having nowhere to interlink these).

Ugh. Not good. In my humble opinion people aren't going to scroll down to read that much content - so that's bad from a user experience point of view. So here's some pointers
1. Keep the Home Page Fresh - if they're in the position of being able to regularly add content, then keep the home page fresh, maybe with the latest post and then snippets to the preview 2 or 3 for people who may be interested. Or have an intro page as the home page with a 'latest articles' box that's prominent.
2. Move the other articles to their own page - this means you're growing the site, can better interlink between posts, can optimise each for carefully selected keywords and makes each one individually shareable by social media.
3. Link Build to relevant articles or categories - much more achievable when that content is not on the home page.
The drop-down DIVs are only helpful for users - Google will be seeing 6000 words of text, which is OTT. That content needs moving, so that unique pages of content are created and can be separately promoted.
Hope this helps - a website restructure sounds like it's in order.

Login Page Outranking Homepage
Hi all, I have a subscription based website with a members login. For our branded terms, this login page is outranking the homepage and we're unsure what, if anything to do about it. One suggestion was to deindex it, but the counter-argument was that we'd be taking away one of our spots on the first page. I feel from a user experience, it would be best to deindex it to try and get the homepage ranked #1 since the login page not optimised towards new visitors. Another suggestion was to just optimise the title and description to make it look a little nicer. I would love to hear your thoughts Thanks!

Duplicate ecommerce domains and canonical
Hi everybody! I'd like to discuss the SEO strategy I've thought regarding a client of mine and ask for help because it's a serious case of duplicate content. There is a main website (the business model one) where he compares the cost of medicines in several pharmacies, to show the cheapest shopping cart to the customer. But the shopping has to been made in another domain, within the selected pharmacie, because my country's law in Europe says that is compulsory to sell the medicines only on the pharmacy website. So my client has started to create domains, one for each pharmacy, where the differences between them are only some products, the business information of the pharmacy and the template's colour. But all of them shares the same product data base. My aim is to rank the comparing website (it contains all the products), not each pharmacy, so I've started to create different content for this one. Should I place rel=canonical in the pharmacies domains t the original one? For instance: www.pharmacie1.com >> www.originaltorank.com www.pharmacie2.com >> www.originaltorank.com www.pharmacie1.com/product-10 >> www.originaltorank.com/product-10 I've already discuss the possibilities to focus all the content in only one website, but it's compulsory to have different domains in order to sell medicines By the way, I can't redirect 301 because I need these websites exist for the same reason (the law) He is creating 1-3 new domains every week so obviously he has had a drop in his SEO traffic that I have to solve this fast. Do you think the canonical will be the best solution? I dont want to noindex these domains beacuse we're creating Google Local pages for each one in order to be found in their villages. Please, I'll appreciate any piece of advice. Thanks!

Any scripts for automated interlinking of sites?
I have heard about similar plugins for Wordpress, but I need something like this to run on all kind of sites, no matter the CSM. Are there universal scripts capable of doing automatic interlinking of pages to rise their weight for SEO purposes? Could you share links to such scripts/sites?

Multilingual site with untranslated content
We are developing a site that will have several languages. There will be several thousand pages, the default language will be English. Several sections of the site will not be translated at first, so the main content will be in English but navigation/boilerplate will be translated. We have hreflang alternate tags set up for each individual page pointing to each of the other languages, eg in the English version we have: etc In the spanish version, we would point to the french version and the english version etc. My question is, is this sufficient to avoid a duplicate content penalty for google for the untranslated pages? I am aware that from a user perspective, having untranslated content is bad, but in this case it is unavoidable at first.

The correct way to go from PHP site to HTML site?
I have a website fully coded in PHP and I am doing a re-design over to an HTML site. I searched through the Q&A and there were some conflicting answers. Some said you will need to 301 all the pages. Others said to use the .htaccess to parse all the files as html. What is the correct way I should go about this? Thanks in advance!

SEO for New Magento Site??!?
Hi All, We have had a new site delivered by our developers (hurrah...the old one was to terrible for words) but we seem to be having a lot of issues with the new Magento platform. What they have done is used the community version and tried to customize it. I came on to this project about a month into the build and although Magento does seem to do a lot things well there do seem to be some problems. From an SEO prespective we have seen some increase on some search terms and a drop of in others. I would be interested in hearing from other Magento users about their experiences with this platform and any ideas on how to crank up the activity. Our site is at www.nationwidepharmacies.co.uk . There are few odd bits including the side navigation which seems to be very clunky and not overly customizable in this version. Any useful criticism would also be well received. Look forward to hearing Nic
