Amazing decrease of visits in a Good Content Site
-
Dear Sirs, contributors and aspirants of Seomoz:
I have a site called General History (http://general-history.com/) that was created in 2010, and has a current PR of 3, a DA of 23 and a home page authority of 32. It also has 1.690 links, knowing that we have not invested on link building, all the links were built manually via post inserting or viral via social shares.
The thing is that in only 5 months, it passed from receiving 14.000 visits/per month to only 1.500. Is that a decrease of 700% in 5 months?
I must admint that I earn my life offering SEO to companies, but this is one of my own sites, a site in which my 73 year old father likes to write about General History. I really think, given that he used to be a journalist, that the content not only isn't spam but it is high quality content.
As I had Analytics, I started searching for the cause. The first question was...
1.- From what source did I loose the most amount of visitors? Organic, Paid or Social. The answer is organic by far.
As I discovered it was an organic loss, I tried to find what content used to have the most visitors. I found 3 posts that brought 80% of the total traffic.
How did the people find the content? Well, some of them found the site in the first page of google when searching for "Holocaust facts and figures" for example, but Analytics says that the most people came from image search in Google Images.
General history disappeared from the SERPs but progressively, not from one day to another. So then I thought, It can't be a penalization.
I contacted google and send them a reconsideration. 5 days later they answered saying that general-history.com is not a spammy site and thus it has not been penalized. For the ones who can read Spanish, here is Google answer:
Atentamente,
Equipo de Calidad de búsqueda de Google"
They say interesting things like it might be other problems that caused my position decrease like: Site content change, content management, server architecture or change or urls.
After receiving this, I thought I should get in the admin panel in wordpress and search for bugs, html or css, php errors and I found that somebody had hijacked my site, entering the wordpress panel and adding a code of into one of my landing pages. That page does not exist anymore. I erased completely.
The span code was as follows:
General History | General-History General History | General-HistoryGeneral History | General-HistoryGeneral History | General-HistoryGeneral History | General-HistoryGeneral History | General-HistoryGeneral History | General-HistoryGeneral History | General-HistoryGeneral History | General-HistoryGeneral History | General-HistoryI thought that would be the problem ! But it was NOT, because Google did not penalize me as you can see in the letter they sent me. I erased the complete page in which the span appeared, I updated my sitemap, re-check my robots.txt, searched my folders via FTP and mucho more...
Conclusion? I have no idea why I General-History has lost 700% of its traffic in 5 months.

HI Grasshoper and other repliers, many thanks for your answers.
1.- The alt attribute: You might be absolutely right, I know the attribute and use it every day in my job but hadn't apply it on General-History. The alt attribute is nothing new, so if I hadn't inserted them on the first place and reached 14.000 visits, how come I now descend to 1.5? Is google penguin so powerful? I did not read any change about the alt attribute when I read about penguin, did you?
2.- The Wordpress Theory: This, I admit has impressed me. I think this might not be the only reason, but it can be a major reason of the decrease as the older posts get far away from the home thus decreasing its importance. I very much liked this answer, thank you.
3.- Competitors. I fullishly dismissed this issue because I did not think that other history sites would invert or do something about their SEO, but I might be wrong.
Grasshoper would you like to have access to the associated analytics account to study the case? I have SEO friends who consider this issue as interesting as anything, I mean, have you ever seen a non spammy site decrease it's visits as such?
Thanks in advance, and by the way, if it is the ads that appear in the header, I would not mind to take it off as it gives very little money.
Thanks a lot to all of you.

Some of my competitors have noticed similar traffic losses when I have moved into their niche.... and I have noticed similar traffic losses when competitors have moved into my niche.
The most dangerous competitor is the one who has yet to arrive.
So, go out looking for the new competitor in your niche. That might explain your traffic loss.

Hi Christian,
It's good that you got confirmation that no manual action has been taken against the site. That means that changes in traffic are most likely due to changes in how Google is calculating individual relevance or authority signals:
- Relevance - Since a large percentage of your traffic was coming from Image Search, I took a quick look at your source code. You are using the image title attribute, but you are not using the <alt>attribute on your images. The <alt>attribute is a much stronger relevance signal to engines. Make sure to include descriptive alt text on all of your photos, for example:</alt></alt>
class="size-thumbnail wp-image-2824" title="Nimitz young lieutenant" src="http://general-history.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Nimitz-young-lieutenant-141x150.jpg" alt="Chester William Nimitz, photographed as a Lieutenant, United States Navy" width="141" height="150" />
- Authority - Because your site is built on Wordpress, there's a chance that the photos (or posts) that were getting the majority of your traffic are being pushed farther and farther away from the home page as new posts are added. As they're pushed successive clicks away from the home page, the link authority flowing to them drops drastically. A quick test you can run is to grab the 3 posts that were getting the most traffic, and put them in a "Most Popular Posts" navigation widget on the home page. That should increase the flow of link authority to them substantially, and should allow them to start ranking again (if this is the problem).
Another possibility is that your site's links got devalued by Penguin. But I'd address #1 and #2 before jumping to that conclusion. Hope this helps!

Christian,
I don't have a true answer for you, but here are a few things that you might want to look into if you haven't.
-
Have you done a link analysis of your competitors? If your problem has to do with organic searches you might be being pushed down in the search rankings. I would suggest that you, do that.
-
You mention that most of your hits came from "images", I'm curious if these were images that showed up in the SERPs and are not now? I'd look into that.
Hopefully that helps.

Is it a good strategy to link older content that was timely at one point to newer content that we would prefer to guide traffic and value to
Hi All, I've been working for a website/publisher that produces good content and has been around for a long time but has recently been burdened by a high level of repetitious production, and a high volume in general with pages that don't gather as much traffic as desired. One such fear of mine is that every piece published doesn't have any links pointing to when it is published outside of the homepage or syndicated referrals. They do however have a lot (perhaps too many) outbound internal links away from it. Would it be a good practice, especially for new content that has a longer shelf life, to go back to older content and place links pointing to the new one? I would hope this would boost traffic via internal recircultion and Page Authority, with the added benefits of anchor text boosts.

Tabbed Content Revisited
Hi-diddly-ho SEO gurus, quick question. I just saw this article and wanted to get thoughts from the people here. https://www.searchenginejournal.com/google-says-now-ok-put-content-behind-tabs/178020/ I am constantly at war with our UX guy on this subject because he believes, along with our CEO, that tabbed and accordion style information is better from THE UX standpoint. Less clutter on a page but with information still readily available. I am not here to argue that point but was wondering if you agree with the article posted here. I had to inform them their roll needed to be slowed until I could get something a little more concrete on the matter.

Is it posible to improve site rankings working only with an other site?
Hi everyone, i´ll try to explain a situation is happening to me, i´m goint to try to explain the case (im writing the sites without links for explication purposes. Site 1: Adventurerooms Site 2: Adventureroomsmallorca Site 3: Adventureroomsmadrid (the new site) What happen is that at first there was only Adventurerooms and Adventureroomsmallorca, Adventurerooms was for Madrid and linked to the one in Mallorca too, was kind of giving the information for Madrid but in first page split with a link to Mallorca. In a new strategy we create Adventureroomsmadrid for Madrid, and leave Adventurerooms for Spain (with links to Adventureroomsmadrid and Adventureroomsmallorca. We redirect the info for Madrid in Adventurerooms to Adventureroomsmadrid with 301 redirections. We work during this 3 months in Adventureroomsmadrid making content in the blog, and improving (now Adventureroomsmadrid is Moz 15 (perhaps even more), and Adventurerooms is Moz 10. Surprising Adventurerooms is getting better in its search rankings, even when we took away content from it and even without working well. Adventureroomsmadrid is also improving but not as much as Adventurerooms (i know that is a new site, only 3 months), but Adventurerooms gets better results with no content and only DA of 10. I hope i´ve explain the case with my english so the question is: "Is it posible to improve site rankings working only with an other site?" Thanks in advance

Duplicate Content... Really?
Hi all, My site is www.actronics.eu Moz reports virtually every product page as duplicate content, flagged as HIGH PRIORITY!. I know why. Moz classes a page as duplicate if >95% content/code similar. There's very little I can do about this as although our products are different, the content is very similar, albeit a few part numbers and vehicle make/model. Here's an example:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | seowoody
http://www.actronics.eu/en/shop/audi-a4-8d-b5-1994-2000-abs-ecu-en/bosch-5-3
http://www.actronics.eu/en/shop/bmw-3-series-e36-1990-1998-abs-ecu-en/ate-34-51 Now, multiply this by ~2,000 products X 7 different languages and you'll see we have a big dupe content issue (according to Moz's Crawl Diagnostics report). I say "according to Moz..." as I do not know if this is actually an issue for Google? 90% of our products pages rank, albeit some much better than others? So what is the solution? We're not trying to deceive Google in any way so it would seem unfair to be hit with a dupe content penalty, this is a legit dilemma where our product differ by as little as a part number. One ugly solution would be to remove header / sidebar / footer on our product pages as I've demonstrated here - http://woodberry.me.uk/test-page2-minimal-v2.html since this removes A LOT of page bloat (code) and would bring the page difference down to 80% duplicate.
(This is the tool I'm using for checking http://www.webconfs.com/similar-page-checker.php) Other "prettier" solutions would greatly appreciated. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. Thanks,
Woody 🙂1 -
Consolidate Local sites to one larger site
I am a partner in a real estate company that operates in 10 different markets across the country. Each of these markets has it's own individual domain. My question is should we consolidate each of these markets into one domain that services all markets? What would we possibly gain or lose from an organic traffic standpoint? In some of our more established markets (Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Tampa, Orlando and Charlotte) our organic traffic accounts for 50-60% of our total traffic. In some of our newer markets (Denver, Phoenix, San Diego) it accounts for less than 15%. We do operate under two different brand names. EasyStreet Realty and Highgarden Real Estate. EasyStreet has been around since 2000 with most of our Highgarden sites only up for 6-24 months. Another question is we are considering converting all EasyStreet divisions to Highgarden. I am a little reluctant to do so, since most of our organic traffic is coming from our EasyStreet sites. Thoughts? You can find links to all our sites at www.easystreetrealty.com or www.highgarden.com Thank you in advance for your insight.

Better SEO Option, 1 Site 3 Subdomains or 4 Separate Sites?
Hey Mozzers, I'm working with a client who wants to redo their web presence. They have a a main website for the umbrella and then 3 divisions which have their own website as well. My question is: Is it better to have the main site on the main domain and then have the 3 separate sites be subdomains? Or 4 different domains with a linking structure to tie them all together? To my understanding option 1 would include high traffic for 1 domain and option 2 would be building Page Authority by having 4 different sites linking to each other? My guess would be option 2, only if all 4 sites start getting relevant authority to make the links of value. But right out of the gates option 1 might be more beneficial. A little advice/clarification would be great!

Site: on Google
Hello, people. I have a quick question regarding search in Google. I use search operator [site:url] to see indexing stauts of my site. Today, I was checking indexing status and I found that Google shows different numbers of indexed pages depends on search setting. 1. At default setting (set as 10 search result shows) > I get about 150 pages indexed by Google. 2. I set 100 results shows per page and tried again. > I get about 52 pages indexed by Google. Of course I used same page URL. I really want to know which data is accurate. Please help people!!
