Index.php + external site added to end of URL
-
Good day, I have a domain http://www.ecofriendlylink.com. I am trying to resolve the Crawl Diagnostic errors on it. I have several Duplicate Page Content errors.
Example 1:
(The domain happynewyou is not mine, some Comments from them have been placed on my site. Ecoshop.php is a page on my site).
URL: http://www.ecofriendlylink.com
Duplicate Page Content: http://www.ecofriendlylink.com/www./happynewyou.com/ecoshop.php
Referrer: None.
Example 2:
URL: http://ecofriendlylink.com/index.php
Duplicate Page Content: http://www.ecofriendlylink.com/index.php http://www.ecofriendlylink.com/www./happynewyou.com/index.php
Referrer: http://ecofriendlylink.com/
Example 3: is a different problem, but still a Dup Page Error.
URL: http://ecofriendlylink.com/water.php
Duplicate Page Content: http://www.ecofriendlylink.com/water.php
Referrer: http://ecofriendlylink.com/
water.php is a page on my main domain. The www version and the non-www version, if this a problem and something I need to overcome?
So please can you advise what I need to do to get rid of this strange external domain name + index.php (as per examples 1 + 2), and explain what I'm doing wrong with Ex 3.
Thank you!

Thank you very much for your prompt response!
I shall Google defining the 404 page in .htaccess, I'm sure I'll have these errors fixed in no time, and that makes sense re the home page.
Thank you!

Example 1: Your 404 page is not defined, so whenever an incorrect link is typed, the server returns a 200 OK and it just loads the home page. Somewhere on your site there is a bad link, so when the crawl followed it and returned a 200 OK , it recorded it as a real page and since it simply loads your home page, it is a duplicate. You need to define a 404 page in htaccess so this does not happen.
Example 2 + 3: the crawler is counting the following pages as your home page:
http://ecofriendlylink.com/index.php
http://www.ecofriendlylink.com/
http://wwwecofriendlylink.com/index.php
Thats because your home page can legitimately be loaded all 4 ways. This is a little different than Example 1 since these variations are normal. I suggest adding a non-www to www redirect in htaccess, as well as a redirect that forces a removal of the index.php.
However - before you do that! You should:
a) check to see where a majority of your external links point to (use www.opensiteexplorer.com). If the majority of them point to the non-www version then you may consider redirecting www to non-www. Also, check your internal links. If you redirect www to non-www or if you remove the index.php with a redirect, make sure that all internal links pointing home point to the proper URL. (so if you did a non-www to www redirect, and removed the index.php with a redirect, make sure all of your internal links point to http://www.ecofriendlylink.com/)

Does having a \ on a URL make a difference?
On our website we have CMS pages which end normally without a /. However when linking from web banners e.c.t it always adds a / on the end. Will this have a negative impact on SEO?

SEO, 301s & backslashes at end of URL
Wordpess started adding "/" (slashes) at the end of my urls and I've left them up for some time. Will removing them hurt search rankings or do I need to do a 301 redirect? For example - www.site.com/page1/ changed to www.site.com/page1 Are there any other ramifications I may not be thinking about besides just search rankings.

Any scripts for automated interlinking of sites?
I have heard about similar plugins for Wordpress, but I need something like this to run on all kind of sites, no matter the CSM. Are there universal scripts capable of doing automatic interlinking of pages to rise their weight for SEO purposes? Could you share links to such scripts/sites?

Mixing hyphens and underscores in a url
Hello. I am working on a site that was built with underscores in the urls, but only in the page names, not in the subdirectories. All the subdirectories have one-word names. So a typical url is "example.com/sub1/sub2/page_name." We would like to change the name of one of the subdirectories to a name that would be very useful for SEO, but this new name is a hyphenated word, let's call it "new-sub." If we changed "sub2" to "new-sub" then our url would have a mix of underscores and hyphens: example.com/sub1/new-sub/page_name. But if I used "new_sub" instead, google would read the words as connected with an underscore, instead of reading the subdirectory as a hyphenated word, which would be less useful for SEO. It seems like it might be a problem to have a hyphen in a subdirectory and underscores in the page names. But I want the SEO value of the hyphenated word. Any recommendations? Thank you!

Site Redesign: Potential Problems?
We're looking at a cleanup of our site and making our navigation menu simpler and more visual. The problem is there's a massive fear that we will incur some sort of SEO hit at a time when we can ill afford one. The bulk of the changes are around some tertiary pages that have some SEO value but are not primary targets or traffic sources. The pages with content aren't moving URLs or changing, nor is the core content of the site, just the template. The new template, I feel, is easier to navigate and easier to spider (menus are flyout divs with images). So are there any tips or tricks to changing the layout of your site without hurting SEO? Anything we need to avoid?

Site-wide keyword density
A colleague of mine was saying that he has been able to get top ranking for a high traffic term by using variations of that head term on multiple pages that are associated with the main page. For example,he would optimize a landing page for the high traffic word "Construction." He would then build pages under this landing page that are optimized for variations of this word: "Construction facts," "Industrial Construction Companies," "Construction Resource Allocator" etc. His theory is that the subpages add credibility with spiders that the root page is the best for that root page. This doesn't seem like it would work, but I'm curious as to what other people think.
