Marking our content as original, where the rel=author tag might not be applied
-
Hello,
Can anyone tell, if it is possible to protect text –type content without the rel=author tag?
We host a business listing site, where, apart from the general contact information, we have also started to write original 800+ character-long unique and original contents for the suppliers, where we expect visits, so rankings should be increased.
My issue is that this is a very competitive business, and content crawling is really an everyday practice. Of course, I would like to keep my original content or at least mark it as mine for Google.
The easiest way would be the author tag, but the problem is, that I do not want our names and our photos to be assigned to these contents, because from one hand, we are not acknowledged content providers on our own (no bio and whatsoever), and on the other hand, we provide contents for every sort of businesses, so just having additional links to our other contents, might not help readers to get what they want. I also really do not think that a photo of me could help increase the CTR from the SERP:)
What we currently do, is that we submit every major fresh content through url submission in WMT, hoping that first indexing might help. We have only a handful of them within a day, so not more than 10.
Yes, I could perhaps use absolute links, but this one is not a feasible scenario in all cases, and about DMCA, as our programmer says, what you can see on the internet, that you can basically own.
So finally, I do not mind our contents being stolen, as I can’t possibly prevent this. I want however our original content to be recognized as ours by Google, even after the stealing is done.
(Best would be an ’author tag for business’, so connected to our business Google+ page, but I am not aware, this function can be used this way.)
Thank you in advance for all of you, sharing your thoughts with me on the topic.

Hi Mat,
You have provided some great clarification, thank you.
Now, I only have one thing to be sorted out:
Should I add the DMCA protection badges to all pages with unique content, as soon as they are created?
My dilemma is, that let's say I find my content somewhere else. I will submit a take down request through DMCA. How it is going to be proven, whose site owns the original content?
I am definetely not an expert in this, but it can easily happen, that my page is not the older one, and the page where my content is placed to, simply just changed its previous content, but the page itself is older than my relevant page.
Thank you

Hi András ,
I think that you are getting confused to what rel=author actually does. It can help as part of the picture that shows google who the originator of content is, but it doesn't assert it in the way you seem to be suggesting. I'll come back to that, but let me address another point first:
as our programmer says, what you can see on the internet, that you can basically own.
This is plainly wrong. I would agree that whatever you see on the internet can just be stolen. However that is not the same as owning it, something that international law backs up.
If you have valuable content that is likely to get stolen then you need to do 2 things:
1. Ensure that search engines find your copy first and see you as the originator
2. Police it
#1 You seem to be doing. Manual submission via webmaster tools sounds painful to me, but will do that. Tweet it, link it, ping it etc. Do what you can to establish "this was here" early and to get Google to index it.
Part of that same picture is to be seen as trustworthy. Get those high authority citations, ensure you content is always unique etc.
However, #2 is about you taking responsibility for your content. It's yours, you own it, there are no internet police so it is up to you. Try a service like copyscape, or just use google alerts to let you know when people steal stuff. When they do hit them with a take down notice, send the same to their hosts, domain registrar etc - then follow it up with a DMCA request.
This will stop a lot of it. It will also make it a pain in the bum for some of the others (if it is more hassle to steal from you than someone else then they will steal from someone else!). It also starts undermining the trust in their sites. If google have frequent DMCA requests about particular domains it helps build that picture. If you see them stealing other people content let the other victims know as well and encourage them to do the same.

2 Domains, 1 Brand - Content Marketing Strategy Question
I have a customer that has two separate locations for the same business on two different URLs (both connected via Landing Page). I cannot change this. They are in the powersports industry (snowmobiles, ATVs, motorcycles, dirt bikes, etc). The locations are about 10 miles from one another, essentially sell the same brands & products (there are 1 or 2 exceptions), have the same target audience (local & from out-of-state), and have the same goals. They currently rank #1 and #2 for their industry in their area. They now want a content marketing strategy. I face limitations with the CMS (no blog abilities and technical issues that are out of my control), and content marketing can really only consist of custom graphics & custom page creation. Typically, custom pages are utilized by creating Brand Pages describing the major brands to built out authority in those categories, and then try to branch out from there to create individual product-category pages with more unique content to answer more of a question based on the intent. I am very concerned about creating content that will be too similar between the two locations and will thus compete with the other location, so I am thinking I should devise a completely different strategy for 1 location over the other. Is that a good idea? I think with the smaller location, I choose the typical route of creating brand pages, product pages, etc, and then with the bigger location, try to focus on unique content such as buyer's guide, local SEO ideas about the area, FAQs, testimonials, etc. Thoughts/ideas?

Duplicate Content
I have a service based client that is interested in optimizing his website for all the services that he provides in all the locations that he provides them in. For example: Service 1, location 1 Service 1, location 2 Service 2, location 1 Service 2, location 2 He wants to essentially create an individual page for each of the above, but i'm concerned that he will be penalized for duplicate content. Each of the pages would have the keyword in the url, page title and within the main body of content. We would certainly alter the content somewhat, but not sure how much a difference this would make. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Content: Best Blogs Article
Hello, For an Ecommerce site, I think a good way to get known is to write a "Best X Blogs" article, where X is a topic in your industry, and then letting the people you link to know about the article. I got the idea from a Mozinar. My question is, how close does the X from above have to be in your niche? For example, if your product is running shoes can you write a "best athlete blogs" article? I'm worried about them reading the article, then leaving. In some smaller niches the topics closest to the product don't have much in the way of blogs out there. So how close to your niche does the Best X Blogs topic have to be?

Is this dulplicate content causing me problems
Hi, i am going to try and explain this as best as possible as i am not used to working with k2 that much. What i have as an example is a page which is here http://www.in2town.co.uk/Cheap-Flights-Ryanair-News This page is news about ryanair now because i am working in joomla and i am working with k2, and i am also making each landing page a front page, i am having problems. For people who do not use joomla i will explain. For the ryanair page which is a front page, i have to make a category and that category for all my content to go into is called ryaniar-news. Now i have the page above which is for ryanair news but the problem i have got is, because i have a category it brings up all the content as a blog format. so for example here is the category section in blog format. http://www.in2town.co.uk/news/ryaniar-news Now i have managed to make sure that the articles are not showing but it brings up the title of the pages and i am worried that this will be seen as duplicate content and will damage the main page of http://www.in2town.co.uk/Cheap-Flights-Ryanair-News I may have set everything up wrong i am not sure but if i have i would be glad if someone can tell me the right way to do it. I do not like the blog format and that is why i use a front page set up so i can have my layout the way i want it. Can anyone please explain if my set up will damage the main ryanair news page or what i need to do to sort it out please.

Is this duplicate content?
I'm optimizing a Magento site and have a question regarding duplicate content. Currently, you can dig down to an individual product listings with URLs similar to this: (1) http://www.foo.com/category/sub-category/sub-sub-category/item.html However, we also have a "Top 50" area, with a link to the same page; however, the URL for that page is: (2) http://www.foo.com/item.html Both are dynamic, so a static page for (2) with different content is out of the question. I asked IT to have both (1) and (2) point to exactly the same page, within the same categor(ies), but they said I would have choose one or the other So, here are my questions: Will Google consider the pages to be duplicates of each other, and thus incur a penalty; If I were to choose one structure, which would be the "friendliest?" I've think I've come across questions similar to this in Q&A, but haven't been able to locate them; so, I'm sorry to be posting a "duplicate question." I've been busy writing completely different product descriptions, nice and deep and value-rich, for more than 300 items and categories and am only now starting to look at current SEO protocols; I'm hoping to ask Google for a site reevaluation in another 2 weeks or so. Thanks.
