Yahoo and Bing, what do they want?
-
My websites rank very well from Google searches, but not so well with Yahoo and Bing. What do these search engines want?
-
Hi Kristopher, ultimately Bing/Yahoo have the same end goal as Google - to give the searcher the highest quality search results so that they continue to use that service. However the methods they use to evaluate the quality of results and achieve this goal do differ. Of course search engine algorithms are something of a "black box", but here are two common beliefs about the differences between Bing/Yahoo and Google:
- Bing probably use SERP CTR and SERP bounce as a ranking factor. It's therefore really important to evaluate meta descriptions and page titles as well as quality of landing pages. http://www.stonetemple.com/search-algorithms-and-bing-webmaster-tools-with-duane-forrester/
- Bing probably puts more focus on social than Google. http://techcrunch.com/2012/10/21/beyond-their-10-blue-links-googles-and-bings-search-strategies-take-different-paths/
Aside from this, major ranking factors on both Google and Bing include inbound links, on-page optimisation, website structure and quality.
Good luck!

My company wants to set up some blogs - what's best practice in getting started from scratch?
My company wants to set up two or three blogs (on previously unused domains) with the idea being to disseminate good content that gets picked up in SERPs and acts as a lead generator, shows us to be authorities in our market, creates brand (or individual employee who's doing the blogging) awareness etc... From scratch, what are all the boxes that should be ticked to make this work from the outset? What are the must haves? With all the ideals in place, how long could it realistically take to make this work? What are some pitfalls to look out for? Any advice in general will be appreciated. Thanks, M

Is Tumblr being used as a social algorithm for Bing and Google?
Hi Y'all, Bing uses Pinterest as part of its image search by using pins of users...But what about Tumblr? Is Tubmlr still a good source for a ranking factor when pointing an image link to your blog? Our industry is pretty boring, so we would get a few clicks here and there a month, but nothing compared to Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest...but overall is Tumblr a good backlink every time a blog is posted for search algorithms?

Does Bing support cross-domain canonical tag?
Hi folks, We are planning to implement a cross-domain canonical tag for a client and I'm looking for some information on bing supporting cross-domain canonical tag. Does anyone knows if there was a public announcement made by Bing or any representative about the support of this tag? Btw, the best info I've found is a Q&A here on Moz about it http://moz.com/community/q/does-bing-support-cross-domain-canonical-tags but I'm looking for a Bing information on the topic.

Bing steady, Yahoo dropped
For weeks, Yahoo consistently contributed just over 80% of what I got from Bing. Suddenly for the last two weeks the Yahoo and Bing graphs diverged, with Yahoo traffic dropping to 50% of Bing's. Any ideas? Did Yahoo make any deals with companies to give them better ranking? Have they suddenly started adding more ads above the fold? Any thoughts? Thanks

Paid for Yahoo Directory months ago, yet does not display in OSE
Hi Mozzers, How long does it normally take for your yahoo directory link to show up in Open Site Explorer? We signed up and got our link on dir.yahoo early January and still see nothing in OSE. Should I call them up and ask them to fetch the page for Google?

I'm thinking about using the yahoo answers api for my site for the real estate niche (to build up some content for potential visitors) in a forum style, how should i go about seo with this method? I don't want to get penalized for duplicate content so I wanted to know what the best seo practice would be for something like this?

Yahoo Store, Is Name ranked higher that headline?
For Yahoo stores. The template built by 1choice4yourstore has Name which Yahoo tells me is the H1tag. There is also an option of Headline. Name works as the title for the page without headline. If you enter anything in Headline it overrides Name and becomes the visible title for the page. So if Name is: 11 and Headline is: 22, the viewer sees 22 as the visible title. Do the spiders see Name and Headline differently? Is there a clear advantage to duplicating and having both Name and Headline identical?

Recently we realised that our client's SERPs were almost always lower on Bing.com and Bing (canada) when comparing with Google.com and Google.ca We want to know if there's different ranking or blocking factors for Bing and if someone had similar expriences. It would also be appreciated if you have releavent and trusted information on this topic, from blog posts, forums, etc. What are your thoughts on this?
