How to structure rich / multi-media on Category pages to pass the link juice?
-
Fellow SEOs,
I'm trying to add videos, blog posts and new fun articles/top 10s/party tips etc to corresponding categories for a costume site. Some of the content I want on these category pages already exists on our blog, the videos are hosted on YouTube and some of the content hasn't been created yet. We're thinking of posting snippets of the articles that link to the full versions vs. displaying the entire pieces on the cat pages. We're also thinking of a 'view all cool content' under the snippets that brings you to a page similar to : www.site.com/pirate-costumes/funideas and it would list everything we have for media for that category - i obviously just want to do what's best for the user but also what will maintain the juice from the media on into the category pages - Another issue would be duplicate content issues arising from posting snippets and/or the same copy that also lives on the blog...**Can someone please help here? Would _really _appreciate it.****Thank you! **Troy

Hey Paddy! Thanks for the reply...totally agree w/ 95% of it. Def don't want to take them away/out of the purchase funnel, it's simply to give them pointers/info/help them have fun w/ their purchase with fun, related content. In terms of links landing on the page and seeing the content, it'd just be an anchored link (to that section), which would put the content right in front of them. I was concerned with load times if the articles expand out in their entirety + videos (think make-up tutorials) + user submitted image gallery. And also how to structure the URLs if all of the content couldnt live on the category pages, to flow any link juice into the category page. thanks again for the feedback! te

Hi Troy,
I think a lot of the answer here depends on what your goals are.
If you're trying to get links into category pages by adding this type of content to them, then this is quite tough because when someone first arrives at the page, they will probably see products which can put them off linking to it. Even if you have some great content further down the page, they may not actually see it.
I do however think it is a great idea to cross link from category / product pages to genuinely good content related to those categories and products. This is good for user experience but you should probably keep an eye on conversion rates to make sure that it doesn't distract people to the point that they don't return to buy the product! Also make sure that there is a good call to action on the content pages to let people return to the category / product.
I probably wouldn't worry about duplicate content from snippets of text. If it is literally a snippet, then a link to the full page of content, I don't think that is going to cause you problems. Having said that, you should make sure that there is enough unique content on the rest of the page. With product pages, this shouldn't be a problem because you will have all the product descriptions / images / reviews etc. What I'm getting at is that if you have a page which is made up of largely snippets of content from other pages, then that isn't a signal of a quality page.
I hope that helps a bit!
Cheers.
Paddy

Find all external 404 errors/links?
Hi All, We have recently discovered a site was linking to our site but it was linking to an incorrect url, resulting in a 404 error. We had only found this by pure chance and wondered if there was a tool out there that will tell us when a site is linking to an incorrect url on our site? Thanks 🙂

Multiple Common Page Links
Hi everyone - I've taken over SEO for a site recently. In many cases, the reasons why something was done were not well documented. One of these is that on some pages, there are lists of selections. Each selection takes the user to a particular page. On the list page, there is often a link from an image, a name, and a couple of others. Each page often has 30 items with 4 links each. For some reason, the 4th of these internal links were no-followed. When I run this site through several different site evaluation tools, they are all troubled with the number of no-follow links on the site. (These instances from above add up to a 5 figure number). From a user perspective, I totally get why there is a link where each of these links exist. If I wanted to click on the image or the name or some other attribute, that totally makes sense. Its my understanding that Google / Bing are only going to consider the 1st instance. If this creates excessive links, wouldn't you want 3 of the 4 links in each set no-followed? If its only excessive unique links that really matter, then why would any be nofollowed.

Cant find internal links on one of my pages.
When I run open site explorer for www.kingremodeling.com/ss.php?pid=5 it says there are 40 links to it on my site. However, I cannot find these links on any of the pages that open site explorer lists such as my homepage www.KingRemodeling.com. Totally confused!

No confirmation page on Google's Disavow links tool?
I've been going through and doing some spring cleaning on some spammy links to my site. I used Google's Disavow links tool, but after I submit my text file, nothing happens. Should I be getting some sort of confirmation page? After I upload my file, I don't get any notifications telling me Google has received my file or anything like that. It just takes me back to this page: http://cl.ly/image/0S320q46321R/Image 2013-04-26 at 11.15.25 AM.png Am I doing something wrong or is this what everyone else is seeing too?

Why does it say I have a page with 106 links, but when I look there are only like 4?
Looking through my first crawl results and there is a page showing with 106 or so links. I clicked into the post and there are only 3 links and maybe 10 photos from Flickr. I have no clue how 106 popped up. Can you explain?

Site Navigation leads to "Too Many On-Page Links" warning
I run an ecommerce site with close to 2000 products. Nearly every page in the catalog has a too many on-page links error because of the navigation sidebar, which has several flyout layers of nested links. What can/should I do about this? Will it affect my rankings at all? Thanks
