Filling Up Content For A New News Publishing Site
-
Hello, SEO Gurus.
I have a client whom I've been working with for a few months now, and part of our service offering is to publish and promote fresh, daily content on his site's blog. This strategy has been a huge success thus far, he is very happy with the content, etc.
Now, he is getting ready to launch a second site, which will be a news publishing site for his industry niche, and we will once again be providing the content on a daily basis: we're going to be producing 10 to 15 articles a day. It's a big operation for us.
The client, however, is concerned that he doesn't want the site to appear "thin" on content in the early going, and asked if it would be possible to populate the new site with the articles we wrote on the other site's blog.
My gut reaction to this is that it would be an exceedingly bad idea to do this. While we are the ones who authored the original content (and we've used author tags and publishing markup), the best bet is to simply start fresh. Besides that, seeing as we'll be pumping out tons of content on a daily basis, it won't take long to fill up the content coffers.
That being said, I just wanted to run this past you all and see if anyone had any alternative ideas on how to use the old content without it being duplicate content. I was thinking that maybe designating all of the old articles with noindex, nofollow could be an option?
Many thanks in advance for your time and attention.
Sincerely,
Mike

the articles are not evergreen
I have a "news" area on one of my sites. Instead of making the huge investment in authorship, I simply link with a comment to articles on other sites. This allows me to provide four, six, eight, ten items per day in just an hour. Writing (at least for me) would take a very long time.
If there is enough news in your niche and you can select the valuable stories then your site could become the "go to" location for people to keep up with the news. In my opinion, the human aggregator with some commentary is better than the robots.
If you do a good job and allow people to subscribe by RSS and email you might build up an extensive list of industry subscribers. Once you do that the stories will start coming to you instead of you hunting for them.

Many thanks - all of these comments have been great. I should clarify: 1) the articles are not evergreen; they are/were topical news articles. 2) The client's primary website is not a news/publishing site, but rather a lead generation site for his recruitment business. His new web property is essentially a completely different business endeavor: a niche publishing site. We've been using blogging on his lead generation site as a means of fast-tracking his search engine visibility and drawing in readers from his target demographic who can/could in turn become conversions. With the new site, We'll be driving web traffic to the site, and he'll be monetizing it vis a vis ads.

Agree. Rethink the strategy entirely.

I like both of the suggestions given by Online Marketing Guy and Anita Clark. Both are great ideas.
Online Marketing Guy's idea is fast and low cost. Anita's is high quality and an investment.
Before deciding I would look at the traffic coming into these articles. Are they getting traffic, are they earning links, is the traffic valuable. If the answer is "NO" then maybe a greater investment in content is not going to pay.
Now.... if this site belonged to me and I wanted to produce "news for an industry niche"... I sure would not build a second website. I would add that news to a blog on my primary site.
Divide and conquer has been a battle plan since the beginning of history. You are doing this for your enemy. Instead, unite the clans.

Since all the research has already been accomplished, why not re-write the old articles (not spun) with a fresh outlook/viewpoint/call-to-action and have the best of both worlds...lots of quickly created content that you are not afraid of indexing?
-
It's only duplicate content if it's indexed. So, you could noindex those pages, but, I would still keep a watchful eye in Google to see if they do or do not get indexed.
Also, since your not looking for an SEO benefit from these fluffer articles, put them in one category you will never use, and each month check to see if you have any pages indexed in that category. If Google does index them, then just use GWT to deindex that category and then you won't have to worry about it.

What are your favourite tools for discoving popular content?
Since looking around for popular content discovery tools I came across a review about a tool called PostRank which seemed ideal until I learned Google had bought it and shut it down already 😞 So far I have been using Google reader and Topsy to discover popular content in my niches but I am guessing there are a whole bunch of other tools out there that may work even better - please do let me know your favourites!

The same phrase in many different pages of one site
Hi,
Content Development | | webg
Recently, I had to add the same phrase, with 15 words, nearly, in 700 posts in a same blog. In this phrase is written about the site ownership and eventually some links showing the posts sources. I thought in create a image, but it will be some variations in the source words (2 or 3), therefore I chose to use text format. I'd like to read some comments and opinions about this kind of insertion (the same phrase in many different pages of one site). For exemple, did you handle this in your site? Problems or benefits (mainly with indexing)? Special code to indicate in this case? Any threat?0 -
Stolen Content and a Panda Penalty
Hey Folks Question for those folks that have spent some time helping people with the recent penalties and the like. I have a client who has a clear Panda Penalty, huge drop in traffic on the initial Panda date and a further drop on the second date. Much smaller incremental drops on subsequent recent updates as well. From digging in it seems fairly cut and dry - copyscape shows another 250 or so sites with content from this site and there are nearly 2000 external URLs with duplicate content across these sites. We are talking complete, shameless copies of all of the text, sometimes the images as well. The client claims the content is all 100% unique and is his content and that the other blogs must have stolen his content resulting in the penalty - which, if it is true, and I have no reason to suspect otherwise, kind of sucks. Now, many moons ago, way before Penguin or Panda (maybe around 2006) I had a client that had suddenly lost all traffic and their historical rankings. No funny business, it was a small company, had been online since around 2000 and they were pretty much the first of their kind and always did very well from organic search. As it turned out, the content from the site had not really changed since it was set up and as lots of companies had sprung up offering a similar service they had seen their content copied wholesale, across many sites, all over the world. We attempted to contact many of these sites and got some results but many were just old, abandoned copy cat sites on advert supported hosting that had ceased to trade so we maybe got rid of about 20%. Well, in the end we just decided to rewrite the content, we did this and sure enough, the site bounced back to it's previous standing and has been pretty much there ever since. Now that was kind of easy, the site had maybe 20 pages, and it needed a sprucing up but in this case the site has around 500 pages so doing a rewrite is not going to be so easy. Problem is, I don't see removal requests being particularly successful either. So, I see the options and steps as being. Contact all the sites and request the removal of the content use the Google content removal facility:

Marking our content as original, where the rel=author tag might not be applied
Hello, Can anyone tell, if it is possible to protect text –type content without the rel=author tag? We host a business listing site, where, apart from the general contact information, we have also started to write original 800+ character-long unique and original contents for the suppliers, where we expect visits, so rankings should be increased. My issue is that this is a very competitive business, and content crawling is really an everyday practice. Of course, I would like to keep my original content or at least mark it as mine for Google. The easiest way would be the author tag, but the problem is, that I do not want our names and our photos to be assigned to these contents, because from one hand, we are not acknowledged content providers on our own (no bio and whatsoever), and on the other hand, we provide contents for every sort of businesses, so just having additional links to our other contents, might not help readers to get what they want. I also really do not think that a photo of me could help increase the CTR from the SERP:) What we currently do, is that we submit every major fresh content through url submission in WMT, hoping that first indexing might help. We have only a handful of them within a day, so not more than 10. Yes, I could perhaps use absolute links, but this one is not a feasible scenario in all cases, and about DMCA, as our programmer says, what you can see on the internet, that you can basically own. So finally, I do not mind our contents being stolen, as I can’t possibly prevent this. I want however our original content to be recognized as ours by Google, even after the stealing is done. (Best would be an ’author tag for business’, so connected to our business Google+ page, but I am not aware, this function can be used this way.) Thank you in advance for all of you, sharing your thoughts with me on the topic.

Nearely identical content
Hi Everybody, I'm just checking the warnings from Seomoz an realized that on our site there are a lot of duplicate page content problems. In fact some of them are not really duplicated content because there are subtle differencies ie. colour or pack of products: http://www.szepsegbolt.hu/termekek/david_beckham_intimately_yours_for_man_eau_de_toilette_30_ml.html http://www.szepsegbolt.hu/termekek/david_beckham_intimately_yours_for_man_eau_de_toilette_50_ml.html What do you suggest, ignore this warning or change something on the site? Thank you in advance Balint

Is there a way to repost content (with permission) to another site without being penalized by Google?
I write a monthly Social Media Marketing column for a local Business Journal and the column is printed in their paper as well as posted on their website. Is there any way I can repost these articles on my website's blog without being penalized by Google for "duplicate content"?

What is the best practice for using the same content on two pages?
I have two websites in a very similar niche(s)...I have good unique content article that I would like to use on both sites because it adds value to the visitor experience.. Example: Science of Colors would be very useful for my seattle house painting paint colors page. I want to have content so they do not need to leave the site to navigate to second site. Would the identical content trigger a penalty or would it be crawled, ignored, and not indexed. Does having a rel=authorship on one site trump the site..Or is it a pile of BAD.
