Do i need to set up a reverse proxy?
-
Ahoy all, just through another audit - we have a terrible CMS which is ecommerce based only which doesnt allow us to blog or write much content, we have our blog as a seperate WP in our ftp panel and comes up as www.palicomp.co.uk/blog and our site is www.palicomp.co.uk - my question is do i need to set up a reverse proxy so this is classed as one site and my blog provides more value or would it only matter if it was set up as blog.palicomp.co.uk?
Many thanks,
Chris

Hey Chris,
Doesn't look like you need a reverse proxy to me, reverse proxies are normally for when you want to run say a wordpress blog (which runs on php, apache etc.) with say an ASP based main site - two incompatible technologies which is normally why lazy web developers just put the blog on a sub-domain - its the reverse proxy that fixes this.
But as your blog is in a sub-folder and not a sub-domain there is no need for a reverse proxy (as it looks like your CMS runs on PHP as does wordpress).
I see you are linking into the blog already, you might be able to tie into wordpress a bit more but developing some kind of plugin, or just going straight into the mysql database, to tie in your two 'sites' a bit more.
Hope that helps!
Stuart

Do I need title elements on all my forum pages?
I have a forum that I'm working on and there are a lot of pages that don't need to be found in search. In fact, I'm even thinking of de-indexing some of them such as the following pages: Registration Login Member Cancellation Member Billing There are also a lot of pages that are only viewable to paid members. Do they all need title tags and meta descriptions?

Do href lang tags need to be implemented at blogpost level?
Hey guys, Our site targets multiple territories. We use subfolders and hreflang tags on the site (built in WordPress) at a page level. We've added our hreflang tags manually in the section of each page. We're just re-doing the blog and we want to know if we need to add these tags to each individual blog post and if we do, how we would do it? Our developers have put them in at blog landing page level and told us that this will be fine. E.g.: /de/blog/ /gb/blog/ /uc/blog/ They have a slight tendency to push back on things though, and we just want to be sure we're doing this right. Hreflang tags are sooooo complicated so hoping you fine people can shed some light on the issue. Cheers!

Should I set a max crawl rate in Webmaster Tools?
We have a website with around 5,000 pages and for the past few months we've had our crawl rate set to maximum (we'd just started paying for a top of the range dedicated server at the time, so performance wasn't an issue). Google Webmaster Tools has alerted me this morning that the crawl rate has expired so I'd have to manually set the rate again. In terms of SEO, is having a max rate a good thing? I found this post on Moz, but it's dated from 2008. Any thoughts on this?

Local SEO - Do I need it if I don't do business locally?
Super confused about this. Our office is located in Los Angeles, but it is not a storefront, and our clients are from all over the country... and our business involves travel to other countries. So there is nothing "local" about us. But everything I read seems to say we should be doing local SEO. How to approach this?

Need to move highest content pages into a sub-domain and want to minimize the loss of traffic - details inside!
Hi All! So the company that I work for owns two very strong domains in the information security industry. There are two separate sections on each site that draws a ton of long tail SEO traffic. For our corporate site we have a vulnerability database where people search for vulnerabilities to research, and find out how to remediate. On our other website we have an exploit database where people can look up exploits in order to see how to patch an attackers attack path. We are going to move these into a super database under our corporate domain and I want to ensure that we maintain or minimize the traffic loss. The exploit database which is currently on our other domain yields about three quarters of the traffic to the domain. It is obviously OK if that traffic goes directly to this new subdomain. What are my options to keep our search traffic steady for this content? There are thousands and thousands of these vulnerabilities and exploits so it would not make sense to 301 redirect all of them. What are some other options and what would you do?

Has important is it to set "priority" and "frequency" in sitemaps?
Has anyone ever done any testing on setting "priority' and "frequency" in their sitemaps? What was the result? Does specifying priority or frequency help quite a bit?
