Daily Link Building tactics to move the needle
-
I know most of you may frown upon this question, but to those of you who are still going after blog commenting, forum posting, Q&A sites (even if that means you're getting nofollow links), do you have any recommendations on a guide/blog post that describes how to create a daily "low level" link building program to supplement the higher level, relationship dependent link building that you're already doing?
Thanks in advance!

I have clients that ask me this question (eg "how can I add quantity links to the quality stuff you're working on?") and I tell them to go ahead and do it if they're determined to do it, but the ROI of time spent is minimal in most cases. Some go ahead and do it anyways, which is fine in most cases as long as they're avoiding spammy practices and using branded anchor text.
Blog commenting, forum posting, and spending time answering Q&A sites can be effective and produce a good return - but the value is in the click-through, not the nofollowed links. They're rarely effective tasks to hire out to a VA unless that person has an understanding of your product and native English skills. You need to be able to provide value above and beyond the generic comments with an obvious link or cry for attention that most people use.
Here's one decent way to interact in forums, provide value, and see a decent ROI: http://pointblankseo.com/ecommerce-forum-link-building. Emphasis is on "interact" and "provide value" - without those two things you're just another spammer. The same concepts can be applied to blog comments and Q&A sites.

Hi pbhatt,
As I mentioned, due to my fear of the "Google Slap", I do all the SEO on my businesses myself. And just to clarify I have multiple VA's with them. Depending on the VA they do different things. But some of their primary tasks are things like answering my customer service emails, some reporting duties, sending out invoice, simple website updates, research tasks among other things.
The best place to use a VA in my experience is for tasks that are respective but need a human decision making (i.e. you can't get a software to automatically do it for you). For example for the emails, I have some canned response, but it needs to be personalized each time (nothing looks worse than a canned response that does not even answer a clients question). I know some people who also use WP that use their VA's to update their e-commerce site inventory, and another that is having them do convert old scanned PDF documents into eBooks and HTML pages. Pretty much anything that can be done via a computer or a phone they can do.
Ok, it is starting to sound like a sales pitch so I will stop. But hiring a VA really was a turning point in my business so I do tend to preach about them. The other good thing is that most of the companies - WhitePicket.net included - do not require long term contracts. So you can try them for a month and if you don't like them, you can just end it.
I hope this helps.

I think we're on the same page. I'm trying to find good guides that provide some structure around the type of link building work I can send to a junior member of my team or outsource to a site like WhitePicket. What kind of work is WhitePicket doing for you?

I agree with what Baldea says. SEO is a full time job, and if you are the only person doing it, as well as running your business, then you really won't have time to do it. I am also like Baldea in that I am usually the creator, manager, seo, etc of my online businesses, at least at the beginning.
I know it is not exactly an answer to your questions, but this information may help A few years ago I had my first successful online business, and I got to the point where I was spending all day on customer support, so I did not have any time to grow my business (which included doing SEO). At that time I read the book "4 hour work week". If you have not read it, I highly recommend it. There they mentioned something called Virtual Assitants. I was desperate, so I gave it a shot, and boy did it change my life. I know how a a staff of VA's taking care of the time consuming stuff, while I spend my time on Marketing and SEO (with the turbulence in SEO these days, I would not want to outsource the work to anybody cheap, and I still can't afford the real pro's).
I don't know if this is a step your business is ready to take, but it may help. I personally work with WhitePicket.net for my VA's (for full disclosure, I do have a relationship with them) but there are other ones out there. Just look around and find one that suites your needs.
I hope this helps.

Hi there,
We could talk about this subject endlessly and we still won't get to a point.
The fact is that for a "one person managed website" is just overwhelming to take care of all aspects (SEO, design, content, updates, copy-writing, marketing, customer support, etc). I'm saying this because I've spent a few years like that and it's just impossible. You can't stay in front of your PC 16 hours a day.
That being said, I'm in doubt when it comes to this "link building job". Okay, yeah, everyone say that we should do it, that is very important and so on, but the majority loose the main point of view: quality content.
You could do some research in your niche, create some comparison tools/data, come up with something new, interview someone and post all that on your website. Sooner or later, someone will be impressed by what you did and will eventually mention you in a comment, on a forum or even of his own website. Those are the links that counts.
If you really have time, you can use DigitalPoint forums, Yahoo Answers, SeoMoz forums, search for the latest news in your niche and participate constructively in some debates etc. But soon you'll realize that it doesn't worth the time.
Cheers.

Breadcrumbs or contextual links ?
Hi, I have breadcrumbs on my site but wondering if in addition to those I should also add contextual links linking to the same pages ? Or is it necessary to duplicate ? The reason i would be doing this is because contextual links/ editorial is what google likes and I am not sure breadcrumbs counts as much. Thanks,

Did Google Ignore My Links?
Hello, I'm a little new to SEO, but I recently was featured (around 2 yrs ago) on some MAJOR tech blogs. For some reason however, my links aren't getting picked up for over 2 years - not even in MOZ, or other link checker services. - By now I should have had amazing boost from this natural building, but not sure what happened? This was completely white hat and natural links. The links were after the article was created though, would this effect things? - Please let me know if you have any advice! - Maybe I need to ping these some how or something? - Are these worthless? Thanks so much for your help! Here's some samples of the links that were naturally given to http://VaultFeed.com http://thenextweb.com/microsoft/2013/09/13/microsoft-posts-cringe-worthy-windows-phone-video-ads-mocking-apple/ http://www.theverge.com/2013/9/15/4733176/microsoft-says-pulled-iphone-parody-ads-were-off-the-mark http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/09/16/microsoft_mocks_apple_in_vids_it_quickly_pulls/ http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2420710/Microsoft-forced-delete-cringe-worthy-spoof-videos-mocking-new-range-iPhones.html And a LOT more... Not sure if these links will never be valid, or maybe I'm doing something completely wrong? - Is there any way for Google to recognize these now, and then they'll be seen by MOZ and other sites too? I've done a LOT of searching and there's no definitive advice I've seen for links that were added after the URL was first indexed by Google.

Does Disavowing Links Negate Anchor Text, or Just Negates Link Juice
I'm not so sure that disavowing links also discounts the anchor texts from those links. Because nofollow links absolutely still pass anchor text values. And disavowing links is supposed to be akin to nofollowing the links. I wonder because there's a potential client I'm working on an RFP for and they have tons of spammy directory links all using keyword rich anchor texts and they lost 98% of their traffic in Pengiun 1.0 and haven't recovered. I want to know what I'm getting into. And if I just disavow those links, I'm thinking that it won't help the anchor text ratio issues. Can anyone confirm?

301 Externally Linked, But Non-Producing Pages, To Productive Pages Needing Links?
I'm working on a site that has some non-productive pages without much of an upside potential, but that are linked-to externally. The site also has some productive pages, light in external links, in a somewhat related topic. What do you think of 301ing the non-productive pages with links to the productive pages without links in order to give them more external link love? Would it make much of a difference? Thanks... Technical Question on Image Links - Part of Addressing High Number of Outbound Links
Hi - I've read through the forum, and have been reading online for hours, and can't quite find an answer to what I'm searching for. Hopefully someone can chime in with some information. 🙂 For some background - I am looking closely at four websites, trying to bring them up to speed with current guidelines, and recoup some lost traffic and revenue. One of the things we are zeroing in on is the high amount of outbound links in general, as well as inter-site linking, and a nearly total lack of rel=nofollow on any links. Our current CMS doesn't allow an editor to add them, and it will require programming changes to modify any past links, which means I'm trying to ask for the right things, once, in order to streamline the process. One thing that is nagging at me is that the way we link to our images could be getting misconstrued by a more sensitive Penguin algorithm. Our article images are all hosted on one separate domain. This was done for website performance reasons. My concern is that we don't just embed the image via , which would make this concern moot. We also have an href tag on each to a 'larger view' of the image that precedes the img src in the code, for example - We are still running the numbers, but as some articles have several images, and we currently have about 85,000 articles on those four sites... well, that's a lot of href links to another domain. I'm suggesting that one of the steps we take is to rel=nofollow the image hrefs. Our image traffic from Google search, or any image search for that matter, is negligible. On one site it represented just .008% of our visits in July. I'm getting a little pushback on that idea as having a separate image server is standard for many websites, so I thought I'd seek additional information and opinions. Thanks!

Site wide links Concept
Hi All, All type of site wide links are bad for Google or it depends upon other factors as well? For example if you talk about GoDaddy or any other service provider company they put their links on the footer of other websites so in this condition, Google will harm their rankings or not? Also elaborate the best practices for site wide links.

Seasonal links, seasonal ranks
As the garden season begins to wane I notice yet again how my ranking for some garden specific terms - eg ' garden tealight holders' start to rise again.Since I am doing nothing much I can only assume that my competitors have moved their focus to more winter based merchandise. Does anyone have a good understanding of how some websites are able to acheive high rankings during peak season only? I am assuming they are buying advertising (with the follow) for say 3 months before the season peak and manipulating internal linking to direct link juice from one section of the website to the other. Is this strategy risky. Has Google ever made mention of this issue?

Linking to Authorities
Hello, I know that if its good for the user, its not a bad move. But for this question I am specifically asking for how it affects my ranking. Does it help my ranking to link to appropriate authority sites?
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | tylerfraser
Have you done any tests to see if linking out to authoritative sites like .gov info pages, industry leaders, etc. help with a sites ranking. I am thinking about taking of all of these outgoing links and just link to my important pages. Thank you, Tyler0
