301 redirect for blog post URL change
-
I'm thinking about changing the URL for a new blog post that I have already promoted off-site today. I overlooked a detail and am gently kicking myself.
I can't determine if it's worth any negative issues that adjusting it might create vs the value of having a more "perfect" URL. Would it be OK to do this by applying a 301 redirect to the page? Would this be the right thing to do or is there some other way?
Thanks!!

Sadly, though, I just discovered that I lost all my FB likes and Linkedin shares...Not sure if there's anything I can do about that.

I just installed the "Redirection" plugin and used it successfully.
Super easy:
1. Change the URL
2. Go to Tools/Redirection/Redirects
3. Add new redirection: input Source URL, input Target URL, hit "add redirection" and that's it!
Thanks Brad and Underscorelive for all your help!
Have a lovely Thursday.

Good to know you are using it. Yep. I've been studying the alternatives this morning. One called "Redirection" is standing out as a potentially good one and has a lot of downloads. Anyone use that?
Others seem potentially complicated and my concern is that i dont understand enough of what I'd be getting or how to use considering the complex description details. Some of them say they won't work with permaLinks? Or look like they aren't designed for a simple URL change within a site. Another thing I saw was that some seem to require creating a new post or page and it would be so nice not to have to do that.
I'm not a programmer and it would be so nice if I could take care of this on my own without having to wait within our company's own queue. sometimes I feel like the shoemakers kid.
Simple is good!

We're on the latest version and still use that plugin, working fine. But if you'd rather be safe in the knowledge that the plug in is being maintained, take a look at these

Hi Underscorelive,
Thanks. Yes. WordPress. That plugin hasn't been updated in 2 years, though, and we're on the latest version of WordPress. Says it may not be compatible.. Will need to experiment perhaps. But I'm a little concerned about that.
Does anyone else have a 301 plugin they like?

Wordpress site?

Very easy to use, highly recommended

Thank you, Brad. Now I just need to get the right plugin for it.

Gina,
The 301 is exactly what you should do. No big deal. Since it is still early it makes sense that you would want to go with a more "perfect" url. I own a network of blogs and we have found that the right URL can be very important to long term ranks. Good luck!

Question about pruning your website/blog for SEO
Hey all, So I checked out "The What, Why, and How of Pruning Your Website for SEO" and recently read ahrefs well known article on seo strategy and both really focused on the idea of removing poorly performing pages on your site for an SEO boost. I've asked this question in a few different ways before but I was hoping to get some more insight into this. If my company's blog has thousands of posts going back 5 years, 99% of which only really had pageviews on the day of their release and then after that receive no traffic, direct or organic, am I better off getting rid of (301) 99% of these posts and only sticking to/improving important/performant posts? Does anyone know how other blogs/sites deal with these sorts of issues. Where one function of the blog is to provide informative articles and the other function to post little tidbits (with barely any copy and rapid relevancy decay rate) meant to promote interaction with the blog community (like polls or one line contest winner announcements). Is this an issue of misusing the blog? For example, should the blog just be used for articles and all contests etc. be moved to social media? Thanks in advance for your insights, Roman

Should I post my upcoming blog series on my blog or on Google+
I am in the process of writing a series of blog posts covering one subject in more detail. Normally, I would just post my blog posts on my blog, but I have heard and read recently that posting content on Google+ is having very good results. So should I post this series exclusively on my Google+ pages instead with a link back to my blog and site or just focus on posting on my blog as I have done before? Thanks in advance, Peter

Duplicate Content issue: Amazon book review & company blog
Can my site be penalized for including a book review verbatim in my blog that I also post on Amazon? What are the steps I need to take? I have written a book review that I want to post on Amazon. I am also planning to create a blog post and include the exact text of the review within the post which I will then also promote on my social channels. What do I need to watch out for in terms of duplicate content? Is there a sequence I should follow? We have the rel=canonical tag on our site which is WordPress.

Why would Google+ send posts as 'messages' to people outside of your circles?
A day ago I uploaded a photo of a US Navy ship mooring at Bell Harbor marina, which is across from my office (near the conference center site of SMX Advanced Seattle). A rude comment was posted by someone from Germany accusing me of sending this to them personally, offended because he's anti-military: "Don't spam people pal." I blocked him. So, since it was uploaded to my public stream and shared to my circles, I have no explanation as to how this could happen. If someone in my circles shared it to him, I suppose it could look like I sent it to him, but I haven't seen that happen before. Anyone else see behavior like this? UPDATE: because this person was within one of the circles to whom I shared this photo, he received a notification that I'd shared it "directly" with him. See comment below.

Does a 301 redirect pass along Google +1's from the old url to the new one?
When I 301 redirect a page that has content that has been +1'ed by our visitors, I would assume that Google would handle a +1 the same as a link and pass this authority along to the new url. Has anyone had any experience or heard directly from Google confirming this behavior?

Do keywords in a URL that's linkified provide anchor text benefits?
I'm curious about links that are just URLs (e.g. http://www.google.com/reader) or in a URL-like format (e.g. Google.com/Reader) vs links with plain-word anchor text (e.g. Google Reader). If a link that is just a URL (or a partial URL) has keywords in it, do those keywords provide anchor text relevance benefits? I'm particularly thinking about URL shorteners that provide customized links, and social media. Many web tools (twitter, blog comment systems) don't render HTML but will automatically link URLs. If http://boston.craigslist.org/jjj/ gets linked to through custom shortened URLs like http://bit.ly/Boston-Jobs, is it more likely to rank for the term "Boston Jobs" than if it received the same number of links using a non-custom shortened URL like http://bit.ly/ejq5uX9?

How do I control the thumbnail image for a link on a Facebook post?
Hi, All! I've spent about an hour working on this with no success, so I thought I would ask the community: How do you tell Facebook which image to put in for the thumbnail on a link you're posting? And I would like it to be a different image for each post, and I don't want to have to deal with programming PHP (the main solutions I saw). I'm on a Wordpress based site, and I've tried putting images in as the featured image, made sure they weren't huge (under 200x200), made sure they were .jpeg... and the only thing that Facebook offers me as a thumbnail is a generic "green globe" image that I don't believe comes from my site at all. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
