Internal Links: How Important and How to Boost
-
A couple of my competitors have WAY more internal links than I do, and are outranking me. Could that be an important factor? (Let's assume all other things equal, i.e. don't bother explaining that it's complicated and many factors are involved, please.)
If boosting the number is important, what's the best way to do it (site is heliski.com)
thx,
tj

If all other things are equal AND you all have some crawlability issues, yes it could be a major factor. For example, if you have deep pages that are not indexed well then linking to them outside of the sitemap could help. Just because a page is in the sitemap doesn't mean Google wants to index it. If it has zero other links (either internally or externally) and the content is a little "thin" they may choose not to include it. Adding a decent internal link could make the difference there.
If all other things are equal AND those pages are indexed and linked to from your crawlable navigation, yes it could be a moderate factor if your competitors are interlinking from body copy and the only place you link from is the navigation - as these types of links are not treated exactly the same.
That's the short answer. The long answer is - it's complicated. Feel free to stop reading here if you really don't care about possible complications.
Some sites go too far on their interlinking strategy and end up with a penalty. I've seen this happen on a few Wordpress sites that use a plugin to automatically link every single instance of a phrase to a specific landing page. That just doesn't look natural, and you could end up getting filtered or penalized at the level of the page or, more likely, for that specific anchor text.
Another thing to look out for is future scaleability. For example, I don't often like to hard code links to specific products within the body copy of an eCommerce site because products tend to come and go. What you'd end up with a few years later is an avalanche of 404 errors that you'll have to manually go in and fix. I tend to leave product interlinking automated (e.g. Related products widget) and save the hard-coded links for linking to category pages, which tend to stick around longer.

Hi TJ,
While internal links do help your websites ranking, they aren't a major factor. They can be used for keywords and boosts a few website analytics such as bounce rate and total time spent on page.
Your time would be better served focusing on producing content and getting external link clicks to your website through multiple channels. This will increase your SEO and page rankings. This is most likely why your competitors are out ranking you. Not because of their internal links.
It seems to me you already have a large number of internal links under the heading 'Heliskiing Canada Operators'.
Best of luck with your SEO!

Disavowing Links
I need some advice... I've noticed our link profile has increased with many comments links --- something I certainly have not pursued manually. I'm new to disavowing links. However, before I go ahead and disavow them, I'd like to ask how harmful these links are and would you recommend this is something I can do myself (relatively novice SEO) or if you'd recommend someone who could do this for a reasonable cost. In one instance, the link from this comment thread is with the anchor text, "porn"... Certainly not something we want to rank for, haha! I look forward to your advice

I am looking for a software to keep track of the back links or link building
Hi Guys, I am very new hear. I just joined. I have a few websites that I need to manage. I am looking for a software that will allow me to manually add the links that I have been able to acquire. It would also be a bonus if it could search for the links to my site and to see if its still active. Because I have a freelancer working a few hours a week on link building and I need to keep track of the links. I am looking for something simple and good. Any suggestions? By the way, I used Raven Tools many years ago, and it had this feature. But since joining Moz, I don't want to be paying for 2 subscriptions. And I don't know if Raven still has this feature. Your suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you. Ryan

Linking to press coverage, reciprocal links?
We have been generating decent online press coverage with links to our site thanks to our PR agency and I have been asked to link to the online coverage from our website in a 'press coverage' section. My question is would google consider links from our site to the online press coverage as reciprocal links? Thanks

Links from my Own Blog to my Own Website and Link Scheme
Hi There, I use my own blog to give advices and offer information related to my business service. Of course in terms of SEO my blog is useful not only to expand my brand presence but also to acquire long-tail traffic. I use to insert a maximum of one link with a relative matching anchor text in every article of my blog pointing to my own webpage. Said that, the questions are as follows: Am I involuntarily participating in a Link Scheme with my blog? And If so, how many links can I send to my own webpage ? Shall I limit the number of links to a minimum? Thanks a lot for your advices.

Nasty links
Hi My first q on here (hoorah!), and it's about links (boo!). I've got what appears to be a handful (but worryingly, increasing in number) of links pointing to my site like this: http://condos.mrgulffront.com/florida-condos-for-sale/320-scenic-gulf-drive-miramar-beach-fl-32550-mls-567591/ I've made contact with the sites concerned, and had only one positive response who flatly denied all knowledge of it. The issue (as far as I can see) is that as in the above example the links (on the bottom right in the grey box) are forever changing so not always visible. Can anyone offer any guidance as to these kinds of nasty links.... I'm right at the v beginning on this "path of seo understanding" so please don't assume prior knowledge! Thanks in advance.... tom

Old links
I am looking to remove some old directory links that now look spammy. Some years ago the site was redesigned. The links are all to the old pages url, which is 301 redirected to the new. If we remove the 301 and let the page 404, will that suffice in Googles eyes?

Link Detox and Link Removal
I have a question about which links to remove after running a link detox from Link Research Tools. First a little back story. I had had an SEO company link building for one of the websites I own. But I have recently stopped working with them. In the last month my rankings have near dropped off the charts. I have just recently gotten access to Google webmaster tools and noticed an unnatural link warning from back in March. So yesterday I ran link detox and it reported 19 toxic links, 120 suspicious links, and 24 healthy links. It's rather obvious that I should remove all of the toxic links. They all from sites that have been deindexed by google. But my question is a about the suspicious links. What should my criteria be for removing them? Am I better off removing them all and leaving my site with only 24 healthy links or should I personally comb through them and remove only the worst of the worst so that I leave my site with a few more links? I'd really like to get the site ready to resubmit to google as soon as I can. Thoughts? yyCOf.png
