Why does this site rank above us?
-
We own www.discountbannerprinting.co.uk and over the last 8 months have built some decent guest post, charity and customer links but still we seem to be beaten on good words such as banners, banner, vinyl banner, pvc banner etc by this website www-signfirm.com we just cannot figure out how this is happening and would be very grateful if someone with great wisdom could give us an in-site into why this is happening and we would be very grateful..

Looking at the links, there's definitely some unnatural linkbuilding going on with both sites. Google is likely discounting many of the links that Moz has found. Theirs appears a little more unnatural, but without a link-by-link review, it's hard for me to say which of your link profiles is being discounted more. I'd encourage you to seek out a more strategic method of getting coverage where your potential customers are online.
Google incorporates a lot of data into their decisions, so it might not be all about links. We should not assume that PA/DA has all of the answers. Link metrics is one of the larger factors, but it's certainly not the only one.
Google does seem to incorporate user metrics to a greater degree lately. The most well-known result is a Penguin penalty, but the less-discussed action is that Google will actually reward sites that seem to satisfy the user query well. In any case, you can't go wrong by giving the user what they want. I think this is one area where you can improve.
Make the purpose and customer action on the page clear. For example, compare http://www.discountbannerprinting.co.uk/banners/vinyl-pvc-banners.html to http://www.signfirm.com/banners/printed-pvc-banners.html, and ask yourself, "what is the function of this page?" My answer on the first one would be, "to learn about what a vinyl PVC banner is." The SignFirm page's function seems to be "to buy a PVC banner." I understand that the CTA is to get a quote, but we should also understand that most of the sidebar content will be ignored.
Also consider a re-design to make the site simpler. Make the things your customer wants stand out. Right now everything stands out so much that nothing does. It's quite busy with tons of colors and a lot of text.

Bob,
The answer is an easy one. "Quality of links!"
look at this:
Our competitors out ranks us at times as well, so we did some research into the ratio MozT/MozR. In your case 5.9/5.57=1.05924 your competitors MozT/MozR is 5.57/5.19=1.07321 which is .01397 better than yours!
So their ratio is much higher than yours which we presume means that someone may have more links but their just junk links as shown by the ratio. You can see this ratio come into play at MOZ Tools rank checker.
We will kill John Deere in everything but still rank lower because of their MozT/MozR ratio.

Ranking strangeness
Just wondering if anyone had come across this kind of scenario which I had/have with a client. Rebuilt/revamped site that has got problems with thin content we are looking to resolve. Rankings for the main keywords were ok on page 2 or 3 and being worked on. Two weeks ago ALL main keywords disappeared from ranking (category pages). The homepage took over and ranked ALL those keywords at #1! Bang -straight to top spot. However happy I was I find this disconcerting as there is a reasonable level of competition. Today homepage rankings in the main go and directories come back into the rankings at some good positions on page one. We still need to fix thin and duplicated content! I can justify the problems and swing with the category pages but the massive cross the board top position for the homepage has been pretty bizarre. Has anyone else had the experience where the homepage suddenly 'out-performs' in a big way?

Why is my client's site not ranking anymore? Like big time!
Ok, I'm reaching out to all of you Moz'rs for some help with this one. My client's site has dropped off the face of google in a real short period of time. It went from page 1 (avg rank 3 to page 6 (avg rank 50) and below in the matter of 2 weeks. Here's some facts: 1. DA is a 22 and homepage PA is a 31. It outranks all other sites in its competitive set. 2. The homepage used to be the page that displays for keyword searches, now its the FAQ page, which has a lower PA of 23. Why has the home page seemingly vaporized? And, why is the FAQ showing as the first result? What should I start checking. I feel paralyzed, not sure where to start. More info: a. There are no alerts present in Webmaster Tools. b. For some reason the homepage (domain.com) was 301'd to domain.com/home.html. Domain.com is indexed by Google, however, domain.com/home.html is not. If this is the issue, what is the best way to handle it? Thanks in advance for your help!

Organic Rankings for the US & Australia
I have a site that is ranking well for competitive keywords in the US, but would like to have it rank in Australia as well. Although there's no direct correlation, I'm running large Adwords campaigns in both countries. I've read to write localized content for each region, but not sure if this is effective as it used to be. I've also read to use location markup and microformats. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance

I have a general site for my insurance agency. Should I create niche sites too?
I work with several insurance agencies and I get this questions several times each month. Most agencies offer personal and business insurance and in a certain geographic location. I recommend creating a quality general agency site but would they have more success creating other nice sites as well? For example, a niche site about home insurance and one about auto insurance. What would your recommendation be?

Ranking a site in the USA
I'm UK based and looking at setting up a site to rank in the USA. As I understand it a .com TLD is best but these are used worldwide so do I simply need to set the geotargeting to USA in webmaster tools? Or is there a better domain to use? With hosting the site in US and on page content related to US cities (I plan to create a page for each US city I operate in the the city name in the H1 tag) will that be enough for google to understand that the page should rank in the US version of google. Also how can I view Google USA search results - when I go to google.com it automatically redirects to google.co.uk and I can only change the location on the left hand side to UK cities. Any help much appreciated!

How do Google Site Search pages rank
We have started using Google Site Search (via an XML feed from Google) to power our search engines. So we have a whole load of pages we could link to of the format /search?q=keyword, and we are considering doing away with our more traditional category listing pages (e.g. /biology - not powered by GSS) which account for much of our current natural search landing pages. My question is would the GoogleBot treat these search pages any differently? My fear is it would somehow see them as duplicate search results and downgrade their links. However, since we are coding the XML from GSS into our own HTML format, it may not even be able to tell.
