Cross Domain Tracking in GA (without cross domain links)
-
Hi everyone,
Been doing some research about cross-domain tracking in Google Analytics (preferably Universal Analytics where documentation is a bit spare). All of the tutorials focus on the auto-linking and ensuring links to the other site are taken care of.
I'm considering a site that may not cross-link like that at all (or it may, but won't be the main avenue). A good example is:
www.gap.com
www.bananarepublic.com
www.oldnavy.comNow, they do link to the other brands in their navigation but let's pretend that they don't necessarily do that. Gap Corporate may want to roll up all these domains into a single reporting profile because customers can clearly visit any of those sites on their own and buy. It would be nice to know that Visitor X bought 2 items from gap.com and 3 from oldnavy.com... and of course, here were their campaigns, etc. From what I am reading, I am not sure this is really possible. It seems that the cross-domain code is really only best for when my main site links to another domain for checkout or something. But in my example, we are definitely not in control of that kind of behavior.
Thoughts? Perhaps I need to recommend they go with subdomains only which Universal GA seems to handle quite fine out of the box. Thank you!

Google Analytics uses first party cookies to track visitors which means a small text file is stored on your computer associated to the domain of your site. This files stores a unique visitor ID and for security reason is only accessible by the associated domain.
If you want to track another domain, without double counting visitors that go to both, you must use the link code you've seen in GA documentation. What the code does is copy the visitor ID from one cookie under one domain to a cookie under the linked to domain.
Sorry if that was a bit technical but the upshot is: use subdomains, live with double counting or use a web analytics tool that also uses third party cookies as well as first party, such as Webtrends.

Just thought I'd follow up after doing a lot more research. It's now my understanding that cross-domain GA will only work if you are moving from one domain to another via onsite links or form posts. It won't do any good if the user visits Domain 1 and Domain 2 independently (they won't look like the same visitor in this case).
If such a thing is required, it seems that sub-domain usage is the only way to account for both types of behaviors (cross domain links and random cross-domain visits).

Thanks John - the gap for me in the documentaion has to do with this:
It discusses traffic moving from A.com to B.com, in either direction (via links). Does this also work if there are never any links between the sites. How would the cookie pass and true up? This parent company has two business lines and wants things to role up if say the user visits Site A on his own accord and buys something. Then a few days later, goes to site B and does the same. Thanks!

I can't speak for Universal GA, but in standard Google Analytics you can use one tracking script across multiple domains with no problem (Google documentation on that). You can then set up a GA profiles for each of the three domains in your example, and a profile to aggregate them, so you can track how each site is doing on its own, and how all three are doing in aggregate. You can do this with both subdomains or top-level domains.

GA 4 Question
What differences are you typically seeing in Google Analytics 4 compared to UA? For one site I have, UA says there were 2,342 new users. GA4 says there were 1,899 new users for the same time period. Does that seem like a normal amount of difference between the two platforms?

What is this GA URL I keep seeing?
According to google analytics, most of my traffic goes to two URLs: "/site/kempruge" and "/" now, I'm pretty sure both of these are taking people to my homepage, but I do not understand the "/site/kempruge' one at all. When I type www.kempruge.com/site/kemprure it 404's, so I'm not sure what URL it even is? Also, I'm wondering if this url is hurting my website in some way? I attached the screenshots, but they didn't load properly. I'll try to add another one in the replies. Thanks! Ruben [](<a href=)" target="_blank">a>

Google Analytics subdomain ecommerce tracking flatlines :-(
Buongiorno from 19 degrees C wetherby UK 🙂 This website http://www.philpotts.co.uk/ contains a shop sub domian @ http://shop.philpotts.co.uk/. I configured the site Ga analytics code to include the subdomain (see below code). I had to do this as i was getting refferal data from the actuall subdomain. But after following the instructions on p117 of cutroni's ga book things have gone wrong, mainly now eCommerce data has dissapeared 😞 So my question is please: "Why has installing the GA code above caused eCommerce tracking to suddenly go dead?" Grazie tanto,

Google referral drop after setting preferred domain
Hey all, After doing a lot of research, and verifying here in the forum, I set our site's preferred domain on monday. We had no preferred domain set for years, but we were already redirecting the non www site to the www one. So, it was evidently an oversight. The day after I set the preferred domain (Jan 29) our google referral traffic hit an all time low. Any other thoughts on the cause? Any ideas on why setting a preferred domain would be a bad idea? Our site is www.mnn.com. Thanks!! Lisa

Solving link and duplicate content errors created by Wordpress blog and tags?
SEOmoz tells me my site's blog (a Wordpress site) has 2 big problems: a few pages with too many links and duplicate content. The problem is that these pages seem legit the way they are, but obviously I need to fix the problem, sooooo... Duplicate content error: error is a result of being able to search the blog by tags. Each blog post has mutliple tags, so the url.com/blog/tag pages occasionally show the same articles. Anyone know of a way to not get penalized for this? Should I exclude these pages from being crawled/sitemapped? Too many links error: SEOmoz tells me my main blog page has too many links (both url.com/blog/ and url.com/blog-2/) - these pages have excerpts of 6 most recent blog posts. I feel like this should not be an error... anyone know of a solution that will keep the site from being penalized by these pages? Thanks!

Backlinks vs Incoming links
Hi, I've been getting stuck into some SEO analysis for a company I work for and I am a little confused. I've tried a search to get an answer but this has ended up being more confusing. The company has been around for decades and their website since 1996. I read everywhere about 'backlinks'. My SEO toolbar shows ZERO backlinks in Google but 218 in Bing. Google Webmaster tools shows nearly 2,000 incoming links from other sites. Is a backlink the same as an incoming link? Why is this tool showing zero? I am even getting email from SEO spammers saying my backlink count is ZERO. But I can see links everywhere I look to the site. Also, on the link analysis tool with SEOMOZ a competitor is showing 3000 external showing links with 250,000 total links. My site is showing 50 and 470 respectively. I have spent the best part of two years getting the site listed in industry related directories. We have paid for entries in Yahoo and some other high (PR) -ranking directories. Prior to me there was someone else adding the site to directories and getting incoming links from industry related sites. So this has been going on a while. Why are the backlings showing as zero but links from external sites showing over 1800? Thanks TT
