Are these Bad Internal Links/Anchor Text?
-
Hi my site www.over50choices.co.uk is 4 months old and I wondered whether my "Quick Links" section (right hand column) on 95% of my pages with the same/similar anchor text was not best practice ie should I vary the anchor text & the target locations more? ( they tend to point to my top 6 pages)
They were set up originally to make the customer experience easy to find things but from what i have read Google doesnt like too many links looking the same !
I also have 3 Graphics (cross sales messages) just above the foot of most (not the home page) pages, linking to my 3 key value pages, all with similar Alt Text tags, again should i vary the alt text or is not a good idea to have this type of link on every page?
What is best practice, as i am trying to balance the visual/customer experience whilst optimising for search?
Thanks

Thanks Peter
When we launched we wanted to present content first & then "buy" later so your comments support this, although there is a temptation of course to stray from this in order to build traffic quicker!
We have moved from about page 9 to page 2 & 3 of some of our key words and rising weekly, i just need to keep telling myself we have only been live 3 months!
Hopefully with the tweaks we are making shortly with some of your pointers it shoudl all add value
Many thanks

Hi Ash
The value of anchor text for internal links doesn't change as far as I know dependent on where they are used. It's more a case of making sure you use anchor text appropriately.
By that I mean particularly on pages where you have article body text. It's good to have links in your body text, but not too much. Only link text which will help the visitor navigate to where they want to go, not for the benefit of search engines to spider your website. Too many links just disturbs the reader and diverts them from linking through to stuff that's important. It also looks spammy to search engines.

Hi Peter that's v helpful thank you for your advice.
We are about to change the non searchable graphics to searchable text blocks shortly.
We are just going through an exercise of reviewing the changes we need to make to make the on page optimisation smarter now that things have settled down following launch a few months ago.
your comments about making the copy more over 50s is v timely,!
Do anchor texts in the body text score greater internal google juice than ones in the Quick Links ie the right hand side bar, as we're planning on rewriting some of the text to weave some in pointing to some of our key value pages?
Thanks

Hi Ash
Firstly let me say that I think your site looks good.
On the Quicklinks section, I don't think that is an issue. The number of internal links you have and your use of anchor text is not excessive at all.
This video by Google's Matt Cutts recorded earlier this year may help you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ybpXU0ckKQ
The only thing I would be a little careful of is the balance of the visual blocks (which do contain some text) to the main text area of the page. There is more info here: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.co.uk/2012/01/page-layout-algorithm-improvement.html but having said that the impact of that is only really on the entry pages to your site. Once you get to the pages you are linking to with the "read more" lnks then the balance is fine.
The only thing you may want to give attention to from an SEO perspective is the keywords used in your pages is whether or not you reference the fact that your pages are for "over 50s" enough. I couldn't see much reference to that. Whilst your site is called Over50choices suggesting the content is for over 50s, you need to be able to back that up with content that specifically talks about the "...over 50s..." or "...over fifties...", not in an excessive spammy way - as you need to write for your site visitors not humans - but enough to bring those words into the context of the pages.
I hope that helps,
Peter

Breadcrumbs and internal links
Hello, I use to move up my site structure with links in content. I have now installed breadcrumbs, is it is useful to still keep the links in content or isn't there a need to duplicate those links ? and are the breadcrumbs links enough. Thank you,

Facet Values as Anchor text
Hi I've reviewing our internal linking structure & have found that the facets/filter buttons on a category, are crawled and have anchor text to each link, for example: The anchor text to filter the product listing results by those under £50 would be: | Facet Value Less than £50.00 (15) Less than £50.00 (15) | This also has the source URL & destination URL of http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/lockers I haven't come across this before - is this an issue?

Is it bad for SEO to have a page that is not linked to anywhere on your site?
Hi, We had a content manager request to delete a page from our site. Looking at the traffic to the page, I noticed there were a lot of inbound links from credible sites. Rather than deleting the page, we simply removed it from the navigation, so that a user could still access the page by clicking on a link to it from an external site. Questions: Is it bad for SEO to have a page that is not directly accessible from your site? If no: do we keep this page in our Sitemap, or remove it? If yes: what is a better strategy to ensure the inbound links aren't considered "broken links" and also to minimize any negative impact to our SEO? Should we delete the page and 301 redirect users to the parent page for the page we had previously hidden?

URL Value: Menu Links vs Body Content Links
Hi All, I'm a little confused. I have read a number of articles from authority sites that give mixed signals over the importance of menu links vs body content links. It is suggested that whilst all menu links spread link juice equally, Google does not see them as favourably. Inserting a link within the body will add more link juice value to the desired page. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks Mark

Link Building And Anchor Text Placement
Hi everyone, I can't seem to find a concrete answer on how anchor text is going, so I'm hoping you all can shed some light on it. We were asked to do a few guest blog posts, and I wanted to figure out what's the most effective way to use the backlinks. Granted, I know user experience is most important, but since we have control over the topic, I can tailor it so that won't be a problem. Other than user experience, how should I approach it? Things I'm considering: 1. Should I use branded text or keyword text? Kemp & Ruge Law Group vs car accident attorney? I've seen some reports of exact match anchor text causing some penalties, but I'm thinking that's for like thousands of links. We barely have any. 2. Should we point the links to our homepage to help our domain authority or to the page with the keyword phrase we want to rank higher? Thanks, Ruben

Links from music/celebrity based fansites - sitewide images with no alt text
We're currently in the middle of a link audit on our website OneDirection.net and a large part of our incoming links come from fansites such as the following: ladygaganow.net nickjonline.com justinbieberhood.com joejonashq.com harrystylesfan.org brunodaily.org onedirectiondaily.com onedirectionfans.net Now, our previous way of thinking was that these are very relevant websites in the same niche as us, and therefore should be passing some value? However all of the links on these sites come from sitewide images with no alt-text. Some of the sites are passing 1000+ links to us. We've been wary to disavow or request removal of these links as we've usually gone with the thinking that Google applies "common-sense" based logic in its algorithms, and therefore these backlinks should be ok - in our opinion. However we think we are suffering from some kind of algorithmic penalty with our current rankings, and are now thinking these could be the cause. What are people's opinions on these links? Should we stay clear of sitewide links altogether? Should we contact the site owners and try to get them to mix up the alt-text? Or should we get rid of them altogether? Thanks, Chris.

Redirecting www.example.com to www.example.com/directory/
Hi All, There's been some internal debate going back and forth about redirecting the homepage of a site to a directory. There are a few different POVs circulating, one of which is that it's no different than redirecting to a /index page. Basically, the homepage is ranking for the keyword that we want the directory to rank for but I can't seem to justify placing this type of redirect. The content on both pages is different, but for the term both the homepage and the directory make sense to rank. Has anyone ever done anything like this before? Can anyone see any reason to do something like this? I believe this move would dilute the link value we currently have going to the homepage and potentially cause us to lose our #2 slot with the homepage in favor of a lower spot with the directory. I'd love to hear any thoughts on this/learn if anyone has experimented with this tactic. Thanks in advance!
