Can someone help me understand Structured Data?
-
So I'm wondering if someone could explain Structured Data a little better to me and what the importance is. I also am wondering how to best add Scheme.org markup to certain pages. I tried a plugin for wordpress and I don't think it was working correctly. I'm specifically wanting to make sure my Google Profile is showing with my website in SERP. I have the ?rel=author tag in on the front page and when I checked it when the Google Structured Data checker it shows it to be correct but its not displaying in SERP.
Thanks!

schema is a method that all 3 takes search engines Google Yahoo and Bing use to better understand the content in your site. & make your data "machine readable" to search engines.
HTML 5 incorporates schema into the code natively so it is something that Google and every other search engine is using as part of their algorithm so is important that it is implemented correctly. There are different types of schema
For instance I can use schema to easily tell a search engine that I am a local business and where they can find me this would result in the site that had the correct local schema on it coming up in universal search results for whatever keywords my site was relevant to.
I could use a tool like this Below its website is great as well with a lot of information on schema that's easy to understand.

An excellent place to get information about schema and a company that builds the fantastic WordPress plug-in
another excellent places the Google FAQ page
https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/1211158
want to use rel=author
download Yoast WordPress SEO plug-in then followed the instructions given here
you can use these instructions to do this on other similar plug-ins as well.
http://yoast.com/push-rel-author-head/
& read
http://yoast.com/wordpress-rel-author-rel-me/
If you're authorship is set up correctly and the Google Structured Data test shows it working correctly it should work. However one quick thing you should check is to make sure there is a checkmark next to your home pages URL on your Google + page there could be a number of reasons why a just not showing up I would check the instructions above and make sure that everything is done correctly.
I hope this is not of hope to you sincerely,
Thomas

Has anyone added Structured Data Markup Server Side?
I want to add some structured data to our companies website via microdata through schema.org. I have been asked to gather all of the requirements so that it can be done server side and automated when things change. I honestly don't know where to begin as there are many areas where it can be added. Has anyone done this server side before?

Do you know any tool(s) to check if Google can crawl a URL?
Our site is currently blocking search bots that's why I can't use Google Webmaster Tools' URL fetch tool. In Screamingfrog, there are dynamic pages that can't be found if I crawl the homepage. Thanks in advance!

Can external links in a menu attract a penalty?
We have some instances of external links (i.e. pointing to another domain) in site menus. Although there are legitimate reasons (e.g. linking to a news archive kept on a separate domain) I understand this can be considered bad from a usability perspective. This begs the question - is this bad for SEO? With the recent panda changes we've seen certain issues which were previously "only" about usability attract SEO penalties, but I can't find any references to this example. Anyone have thoughts / experience?

Can anyone rcommend a UK Hosting company
As some of you may have seen in an earlier post, i have had problems with the speed of my site. After good advice i got an expert on board who done tests and found that my server (hosting company) was taking a long time to answer, on some occasions it was taking seven seconds. I have tried to get the hosting company to listen and sort the problem out but they are not interested and keep trying to sell me other things to get the site faster, i am already on a dedicated server. So now I am looking for a UK hosting company who offer good service and would be grateful if anyone could recommend some on here so i can speak to them, as i want to get my sites moves a.s.a.p many thanks

How do you deal with lack of understanding about SEO?
Since I subcontract out to web design people or work doing SEO for small businesses, I am wondering how others (and if others) deal with non-compliance with good SEO practices. For instance, I had a web designer change a few of the terms for a website because the client wanted another term they thought was better instead of sticking to the SEO they contracted for and she diluted the site architecture in the process. A former small business client called for some changes and I discovered she had made some changes she "thought were good terms." Do you encounter such issues, and if so, how do you deal with them--or do you just oblige the request? Also, I've been getting requests to do "partial" seo instead of entire sites. Is that ever a good idea and if so, how would you handle it? If not, how do you successfully dissuade a client from doing so? (Both small biz and web design peeps)
