Do javascript pseudo-links dilute link juice ?
-
Hi,
On our ecommerce, we use multiple pseudo-links for the layered navigation (to filter by color, site, etc), so that google doesn't crawl every combination of filters.
I know this kind of links don't pass link juice and don't get crawled (provided you hide the target urls in your javascript). But, as there is an "onclick" property, I'm afraid that google could understand that these are links, and treat them the same way as nofollowed links (not following them but diluting link juice anyway).
Do you know if this is the case ?
Thanks,
-
No, you should not have any issues with dilluting the source URL, and not pass link juice to the other pages.
Here is a short list of ways I've used the span link.
-
For links that only run JavaScript when they are clicked. They don't load a new page into the browser.
The same thing can be done with href="javascript:..." within an A tag. With the span link, however, any JavaScript that affects the A tags on a page will not affect the span link.
-
For links that only run JavaScript when a mouse hovers over it. They're not supposed to load a new page when the link is clicked.
The span link in this case is so much more elegant. An A tag must have an href attribute and, if the link is used only for an onmouseover, the href must be constructed to do nothing when the link is clicked.

Hide from spiders that another web page is being linked to.
Perhaps you wish to link to another website for the convenience of your visitors. Yet, the other website is not in the same category as yours and you don't want certain search engines to think your site is similar to that other.
Or, you simply don't want to provide link juice to the other site.

Hi,
It is not set to nofollow, since it is a section (not a <a>). My question was if Google would handle a link the same way as a</a> <a href="" rel="nofollow">, i.e. not pass link juice to the target url, but still dilute link juice from the source url ?</a>
<a href="" rel="nofollow">Thanks</a>

Since the onclick event is a Javascript issue it's to all intents and purposes ignored by the search engines. What counts is whether or not your link appears in the href attribute, and whether or not the link is nofollowed. You stated that it is already set to no-follow, so you should be ok.

Internal Website Linking from Syndicated Blog Posts
Does it help, hurt, or do nothing for my website's SEO if I do internal linking from syndicated blog posts (on my blog) to my website pages? For example, a syndicated blog post on winterizing your house has instances of "homeowners insurance" linking to my webpage on homeowners insurance. Proper canonicalization is done as well.

Outbound links
Hi everyone, Just a quick question about using info/statistics from other sources in my articles. If I use a quote/piece of info from another online article do I just say where it's from and link to it? Is this acceptable or do you have to get permission? I find the whole permissions thing quite confusing! I know that outbound links are good for SEO so just wanted to check this. Thanks!

Pyramid link structure - how to noindex, nofollow
I'm talking about this article: https://mza.seotoolninja.com/learn/seo/internal-link Take this sample: HOME --> Shirts --> Plain shirt --> shirt#1 Product page: noindex, follow all links except 1 from breadcrumbs to nearest category (plain shirts). SubCategory page (plain shirts): noindex, follow all links except 1 link from breadcrumbs to nearest category (shirts) and all products belonging to current subcategory. Category page (shirts): noindex, follow all links except 1 link from breadcrumbs to front page (site.com) and links to own subcategories. Front page: noindex, follow all links except 12 links to main categories (shirts, pants etc.) Is it correct? If I noindex some parts of website, will it be harmful?

Too many page links warning... but each link has canonical back to main page? Is my page OK?
The Moz crawl warns me many of my pages have too many links, like this page http://www.webjobz.com/jobs/industry/Accounting ...... has 269 links but many of the links are like this /jobs/jobtitles/Accounting?k=&w=3&hiddenLocationID=463170&depth=2 and are used to refine search criteria.... when you click on those links they all have a canonical link back to http://www.webjobz.com/jobs/industry/Accounting Is my page being punished for this? Do I have to put "no follow" tags on every link I do not want the bots to follow and if I do so is Roger (moz bot) not going to count this as a link?

Footer-links (navigation)
I want to put navigation links in my footer. I watched the (distilled) whiteboard friday video saying it can be a penalty. How are links in the footer different from links in the navigation. Why don't you get "hit" for putting the word "Real Estate Listings" in the navigation menu? It appears on every one of the 30k pages. I don't get why the links in the footer would have a negative effect if the links in the navigation don't. My example is a real estate website. When people are browsing properties (30k), it is convenient that at the end of the page there is a navigation of areas. I could put the navigation on the sidebar but that would be in essence, the same thing. A wordpress site would dynamically include that sidebar on every page.

Canonical links
My website is relatively new, January. We climbed steadily to 6th for our search term then overnight rocketed to 1st. This only lasted a week and have been stuck at 9th ever since. When I use the SEO Moz tools our site should theoretically be top...I only joined today btw. Anyway in Google webmaster tools I noticed it said I had duplicate title tags, when I checked to see what the pages were- it was my home page! Google also seems to have cached two versions of our homepage, the root domain and the Default.aspx page. Now I have fixed this canonical linking issue today (using canonical link tag and 301s) so time will tell but has anyone got any first hand experience of this issue? Was it a big factor? Thanks!
