Does linking to a subdomain give link juice to the main domain?
-
I have a few domains that I'm going to use for link building, will the link juice from the sub domains transfer to the main domain?
-
Yeah it can get really confusing. Here's the concept. Each Root domain can have many subdomains, as well as sub-folders.
Any link pointing to any subdomain or subfolder will provide some linking value to the entire root. It's not as much as that individual subdomain or subfolder gets, however the cumulative impact is there and it's real.
The reason is pretty straight forward - any sub, (domain or folder) is naturally associated with the root. It contributes to the overall weight of that root.
It's not unlike the branches of a tree. While the rain may fall directly on a branch, some of the water has the ability to work it's way back to the main trunk of the tree.
Just like water that seeps into the ground and soaks into the roots, can and will work it's way up the trunk and to the branches.

I always thought that a link to a subdomain did not benefit the main domain. Alan, can you explain this more? If an external website links to subdomain.mydomain.com will mydomain.com get link juice from this?
-
If you mean - if we get an inbound link pointing to the subdomain, will the root domain benefit?" the answer is yes to a certain extent. How much will depend on how closely related the subdomain topical focus is to the root domain, as well as how strong the link is from the perspective of the source site.
If you mean - if we point a link from within a subdomain to a page on the root domain, will the root domain benefit?" Then the answer is also yes, but how much depends on many other factors. And those links will carry less value than most quality inbound links coming from other root sites not in your control.

Spammy links
Hi I was reviewing a clients link profile and found a lot of the links they have pointed at their domain have the anchor text "Buy Viagra" or "buy viagra online" and similar. Now the website has absolutely nothing to do with this kind of business so no doubt these links are spammy. To my knowledge the website has not been penalised by Google so far. Is it best to disavow or just leave alone? Kind Regards

Do links in hosted documents help with domain authority?
When giving presentations in our industry, we often find that the PDF or PPT document is then hosted on the origination's domain for download by event attendees. If these files have links, do they count as inbound followed links?

Link Relevance vs Link Authority ?
Hi guys, I have a quick question regarding some low quality links my site is getting. From the information in Open Site Explorer, the website Im talking about has a page authority of 16 while the domain authority is 11\. These are very low quality scores in my oppinion and Im thinking of removing them with Google Disavow Tool. The thing is that, although the domain is low quality, the links have relevance as they're in the same business sector as us. More exactly, the name of the domain is taxisavona and the company I work for is also a taxi company. So, now I`m thinking, should I disavow the link because of it's low scores or should I leave it because it is relevant to our business ? Thank you in advance! Best regards, Tiberiu Iavorenciuc

Custom Domain Vs Free Sub Domain for SEO
What is your take on custom domain vs free sub domain for SEO? (example.com vs example.blogspot.com) Say if I have 10 links from 10 different domains but all hosted on blogger.com, will it still have the same link benefit as ones hosted on different hosting account? I am assuming it might be less due to the same C class IP appearing for blogger hosting. What do you think?

Do image links with no alt tags pass link value?
"... an image link with no alt tag is useless to search engines..." according to a Nov 2007 seomoz blog post. Is this still the case in 2011? I ask because I'm about to obtain a banner link on a high-traffic site (chiefly for the clickthrough value) but I notice the site uses neither "title" nor "alt" tags.
