To switch high-ranking keyword for one with higher volume?
-
I have a client who already ranks very well for the keyword "odor removal service" (#3 average rank). I'd like to use this as my primary keyword phrase, but the search volume is not very high (avg. monthly search of 90). A similar keyword phrase like "odor eliminator" has a search vol. of 4400 and the same competitiveness. Even its long-tail derivatives like "natural odor eliminator" still have a much higher volume (360) and would be a more accurate description of the service.
In cases like this where you are already ranking well for a relevant keyword (but are still not generating much traffic), is it worth losing that keyword ranking in the hopes of ranking better for a keyword with higher volumes. Just to be clear, I'm not referring to a secondary keyword, but to the main keyword phrase around which we'll be building primary and secondary related keywords.
Thanks for any feedback.

If you have great content and a competitive service, do not fear competition. Because, where there is a lot of competition there is usually a lot of money changing hands - and ranking lower in higher competition will often yield more traffic and more sales than playing for peanuts. And, many times when comparing high search volume to low search volume, the same strong competitors are in both places.
So, I just decide where I want to be and attack. For "odor removal service" and "odor eliminator" , I would attack them both with one page and as much energy as I can put into it.

Good point about intent. So far i've spent more time on the first 3 but not as much on the last two (intent).

Search volume is only one factor that you should consider when analyzing keywords. At a minimum, we look at the following during keyword research.
- Search volume
- Keyword difficulty (Using Moz's Keyword Difficulty tool)
- Relevance (How relevant is the query to the client's business, website, products, or services? This is a subjective number that we score as a percentage.)
- Searcher intent - There are lots of different ways to classify user intent. See this, this, and this for more info.
- Google's perception of user intent - Analyze the SERPs to see what types of results appear for that query.
The last two are key for your issue. Take a look at the SERPs. Every result for "odor eliminator" is for a product rather than a service, and the top ranking sites are powerful brand sites like amazon.com, walmart.com, and homedepot.com. On the other hand, if someone searches "odor removal service," they are clearly not looking for a product. If my assumptions are correct, that query is 100% relevant to what your client is offering.
My advice is to focus on the more relevant, less competitive keyword in this particular case. .

Hi Jon,
The answer might seem pretty straightforward, but sometimes looks can be deceiving. On the one hand, it seems to make sense to target keywords that are both higher search volume and describe the service more accurately. On the other hand, it can be painful to leave something behind that is currently doing well.
The simple truth is that even a lower ranking for a higher volume search term can be better than a high ranking for a low search volume one. If you were able to rank the smaller search term in 3rd place, there's no reason you can't do the same for a larger term with equal competitiveness. Just let your customer know they are likely to experience slightly lower traffic for a short duration while you sort it out. They should be understanding and down the road they will thank you for creating a better end result for them.
It will probably be better if your new approach is a better descriptor of the business, as this is more likely to create higher conversion levels moving forward (targeted traffic is worth its' weight in gold).
Just be prepared to do some hard work in the near future!
Best of luck!

I understand it's been asked before, however moz staff is telling me keyword's capitalization is treated as a separate keyword.
So there I was looking through my rankings like every other day, when I see a lowercase and uppercase version of a keyword. Most times I see this, I see them with the same rankings, and even researched this about 5 months ago, when I came to the conclusion that google treats them the same way. However, this day I saw them as different ranks, same keyword, only capitalized 1st letter of the 2 word keyword. I asked moz staff about this, as I felt it was an error. But was met with the answer that google does indeed treat these keywords differently. My line of thought was that the rank checker didn't check both the lowercase and uppercase keyword at the same time, and SERPs happened to change when the second word was checked for rank, returning a different rank. So now, I am in doubt again, as to uppercase and lowercase keywords being different or the same in google's eyes? I honestly don't know why a uppercase keyword would have different motive from searcher than a lowercase when many time not, searchers can't even spell the keyword correctly.

Which page is currently ranking the best for a particular keyword?
Hi Guys! I have approx. 50 keywords that I'm tracking for a website that has about 80 pages. I am wondering is there any way that I can find out which page on the site is currently ranking best for each of the keywords on my list? Ideally I would like to export the entire list with the keyword in the first column and the page that ranks best on the website for each given keyword, in the second column. Apologies if the wording of this post is confusing - I am not quite sure how to make it clearer. The aim of my task is to determine which keywords should be allocated to each page on the site so I need to work out which keywords are working already for certain pages so that I don't take those efforts away from the well-optimised pages. Many thanks! Meaghan

Keywords with and without diacritics
Hi, I am trying to make my site to appear in the search results even the searched term have or have not been wrote with diacritics for example: "șarpe" or "sarpe". The language is Romanian. If I seach for "Românul cu maşină, marea victimă" or "Romanul cu masina, marea victima" the first result for both searches is the same. I don't see anything special on their html code and I am wondering how do they did it. Regards, Bogdan

Low Competition Keywords
My blog, which started in May, is doing really well except with Google. My traffic is growing and so are my subscribers etc but my keywords have very high competition. I don't really like google's new keyword research tool. Any advice for finding keywords I have a chance with? I am only ranking in the top 50 for one keyword (#1-2 spot) but it doesn't give me a lot of traffic. Thanks!

How do I make sure my homepage ranks better than my 2nd page when I need the same keywords for both? I don't want them competing against each other for keywords.
I seen here on SeoMoz something about more than one page having the same keywords so they don't compete against each other for the same keywords that makes sense to me. But I would like my main page (homepage) to be ranked better over time rather than the 2nd page or do I just not care about the second page ranking at all and don't SEO the page very well? ,Both pages have similar content so I need the keywords for both. So im very confused on what to do with the second page. Thanks in advance to any helpful answers, i am a newbie when it comes to SEO.

Comprehensive Keyword Research Report?
I'd like to provide a keyword research report to a client, that includes all of the keywords we're targeting, organized nicely along with relevant data for each (keyword difficulty, search volume, etc.). Is there a way to do this other than running an individual report for each keyword? I'd like to avoid sending them a 50 page document showing all of the keyword research 😉 Thanks for any help! Josh
