Category 404 Error in Wordpress | Help!!!
-
Hello Gurus hope everyone is having a fantastic day.
Right so I've been pulling my hair with this 404 error on links as such:
htttp://manvanlondon.co.uk/category/clients/removals/man-and-van-wandsworth
This link appears in the category page clients and the /removals/man-and-van-wandsworth part is the link that should take the user on the Man and Van Wandsworth page in the/ from the footer. However this link and all other links in the footer on these category pages/posts appear to be broken ONLY on this category pages, thus creating 404 errors. And those pages(i.e man and van Wandsworth) are not even categorized.
The website is www.manvanlondon.co.uk .
We tried various things on Wordpress and nothing is working including non-indexing. Has anyone met this problem before? Is there a way to fix it?
Thank you for your time, and hope my explanations make sens.
Monica

Thank you so much Dan, this is the answer I was looking for.

Hi Monica
Basically you need to edit/update your links in the footer for blog categories. Depending on your setup there'd be a few ways to do this. Some guesses:
- I would try checking your widgets. Often, themes will allow the setting of footer links in the widgets. Just update the links to point to the correct pages. You may want to be sure you don't have unique widgets for category pages.
- Menu - go to Appearance -> Menus - and perhaps you have a footer menu. Check the links there and see if you can update them.
- Finally, it's possible the links are coded into the categories.php page template. You can find this by going to Appearance -> Editor and looking for the file. Unless you are comfortable with a little bit of code, you may need someone to help you with this option.
So that's it - you just need to know where to update your footer links. It might be something you would want to ask a dev or someone experienced with wordpress to help you with.

It might make sense to ask for an objective 2nd pair of eyes on your Wordpress configuration. It's sounding like it might be a setup problem. Do you have someone you can ask to do that?

Thank you for replying Donna,
It was hard for me to explain, so thank you for taking the time to reply.
The category extension is part of the blog posts, so theoretically they are not pages but posts. However the links in the footer on those category posts/pages so http://manvanlondon.co.uk/category/clients/removals/man-and-van-wandsworth they should be http://manvanlondon.co.uk/removals/man-and-van-wandsworth however for some reason it automatically adds /category/clients/ or /category/latest-news in the URL thus creating these 404 errors on those links in the footer.
Does this make more sens?
I do apologize for my poor explanations.
Many thanks again.

You maybe haven't gotten any responses yet because the page you reference - http://manvanlondon.co.uk/category/clients/removals/man-and-van-wandsworth - comes up as a blank page with the words "write error" in the upper left-hand corner. It's hard to diagnose without being able to see.
I get the same error if I try to view http://manvanlondon.co.uk/category/. Are those legitimate pages? I can't navigate to it via your site structure. I can get to http://manvanlondon.co.uk/category/removals/ but not http://manvanlondon.co.uk/category/clients/removals/.

HELP! How do I stop scraper sites - is there any recourse?
Our site has lots of unique content and photos and it is constantly being scraped and posted on other websites. Most of these are no-name sites that pop up and exist for adwords revenue. Aside from the fact that we don't want our content being copied, this is an SEO nightmare because they often link back to us from pages that are stuffed with keywords and have very low domain authority (it's a form of negative SEO). My question is: Does anyone have experience with fighting this phenonmenon? What have you done that is effective? Does anyone have experience with a service such as http://www.dmca.com/ProtectionPro.aspx ? Does it work/is it worth it? Any input is appreciated!

WordPress and Rich Snippets plugin creating 501 error
Good Morning MOZguru's, Right, so I've been trying to install the Google schema.org rich snippet plugin through Wordpress for a website, and after I activate it, the website does not load ( appears a blank page) or loads very very slooooowww. Also through the MOZBar, Http status section, after the plug in it's activated it shows a 501 error. I had this issues with another website I was working on, hosted by Godaddy, and fixed it by installing plugins through the control panel on go daddy and not through WordPress. However this website is not hosted on the same platform. Does anyone know what should I do in order for the plugin to work and not affect the website? Many thanks, Moncia

Category vs Product level URL - Does it Matter?
Is there much google juice to be had by moving a key "money making" product up the URL structure? For example, in this URL http://www.over50choices.co.uk/Funeral-Planning/Over-50-Life-Insurance.aspx will we gain any juice moving "Over-50-life-insurance" out of the "funeral planning" category and directly to the Domain eg www.over50choices/over-50-life-insurance.aspx ? The page currently ranks on page 2 and 3 for various phrases and we are looking to get to page 1 - its a very competitive set of keywords! Thanks Ash

WordPress redesign: using posts as pages?
Starting a redesign for an attorney who is currently using WordPress with an old framework that is no longer being supported, so I'm going to install a new WP and start from scratch. The site consists of about 30 static pages (practice areas, attorney profiles, etc.) and they write about 5 blog posts per month. I've always differentiated between posts and pages for WP sites I've done in the past, but this time around I thought it might be more clean (less files, and easier for their webmaster to make routine edits) if I just brought over the static pages as posts. However, the recent webinar on the Yoast SEO plugin mentioned using the month/day in the permalink structure for posts to avoid duplicate content issues. That would go against how I was thinking of setting it up, because I would have just generated the URL off the page title and make a separate category for "pages". Just wondering if anyone's used posts as pages before. While this seems like it would make things easier for the webmaster, I'm not sure it maximizes potential for SEO. Thanks.

Thanks for the help!
I just wanted to say thank you all for the advice you've given on this board. When I first joined we had been stomped by Panda three times and our traffic was down about 40% from last year. Since then, we've followed recommendations here and while we aren't quite back to where we were before, our traffic for the last three days from Google is higher than any time since May and trending higher. We are also up in Google rank for 70% of our tracked keywords and showing up for 15% that we weren't even on the radar for in August. We still have a lot of work to do but know that we are on the right track. We can now do the same on a site that survived the initial hit but got slapped in July. I just want to reiterate what others have said: Get rid of duplicate urls - 301 redirect all dups to a single page Flesh out or drop pages with low content value Find 404 pages that used to exist and instead of 404s, 301 redirect to current resources Fix speed issues This forum was well worth the subscription.
