Where Should Your Company Press Releases Live
-
Hi there,
Our company publishes press releases on the company blog and have found we were hit by an algorithm update. We have identified the press releases as being the culprit and would like to move all press releases to a company press page on the main site and title it "press room" or "press." We have a lot of media sites that visit our blog to grab the most recent releases, so they are important to the business.
My question is, how should we handle the page SEO wise? Should we do a "no index" or a "no follow" on all the links? I'm curious what advice the community has on how to handle a company's press page.
Thanks!!

No problem - that's what this great community is all about

Great, thanks for the feedback!

As the main aim of a press release is for the press to pick up and give your newsworthy content exposure to their wider audience I would consider having it on your site but you could sit it in a sub-directory that had a noindex, nofollow tag on it as essentially it is there for repeat press visitors. It isn't really there to be indexed and rank in terms of the content of each press release page so this should matter. This is how I previously ran one site successfully - a press center with noindex, nofollow on it and then if it had something important that required more detail there would be a separate in-depth piece written and added in the news/blog section.
A sub-domain as you suggested would also work in my opinion.
When I did this before I also made sure my press center had a lot of calls to action all pointing at an email subscription form so I could email any press contacts every time a press release goes live (you may already have this in place but I thought I would mention it).
I would still consider adding a no follow to any links in your releases - as you say it isn't a link building tactic.

Hi Matt,
Thanks for responding! We don't think it was a Penguin update penalty, but the Panda 4.0. So with that being said, it was do more to thin content and press release content. We weren't using press releases as a link building tactic, but we didn't make the links "no follow."
We like the idea of setting up a press page exclusively for the releases and totally separate from the blog. My concern is that the releases could hurt the main site. What do you think about doing a sub-domain with no follow links?
For example:
or do you think no follow links with www.example.com/press would be ok?
Thanks again!

Hi Kevin,
Just a quick question - have you found that you were hurt due to the press releases being grabbed by other sites and they contained links to your site that you had included in the release?
From my experience the best way to deal with press releases is to use them for what they are meant - to bring exposure from a wider audience and not to use them to gain links. I personally nofollow any links in press releases and they still work well. I also only include raw URLs either at the homepage of site or at the page of something specific that I am writing the press release around. This is all pretty obvious but I still see people messing up with press releases.
I think having a separate press center is also a good idea as you mentioned.
Hope this helps...

Two companies merging into a new website. How to merge two existing websites into a brand new website and preserve search rankings.
Brand A and Brand B are merging to form Brand C. Brand A has a great search presence (prominent rankings, answer boxes, and impressive organic traffic). Brand B has a good reputation in real life but their web presence was extremely weak (we've been helping with that over the past few months and it is improving). What are the steps we need to take? The previous domains from Brand A and Brand B are going away and we need to promote the newly minted Brand C website. This Q/A summarizes what we want to do but with one exception: They only discuss merging Brand A into BRand B and there is no Brand C.

Should a company's online tool be hosted on their own domain?
Our company is developing a web-based tool that will provide good value for its users and generate leads for us. The tool is large enough in scope and different enough than the main service that we provide that we're considering putting it on its own domain. I have two questions: 1. Does it behoove a company to put their online tool on a separate domain if the tool is large enough in scope and different enough from their website's core function / business's core service? (Examples of this would be Hubspot's Marketing Grader or Open Site Explorer before Moz rolled it back into its domain.) 2. If yes, should the domain name a) describe the function of the tool or b) build a brand for the tool itself? Thanks for your help!

Will you show a case study/live analytics of Moz before and after name change?
so many people are interested these days in changing domains either for branding purposes like you did or some people believe that having an exact match domain will save the day. I believe posting any knowledge you have gained through your fantastic looking analytics system could shed light on a subject so many people seem to be asking about. Some things I would love to know regarding the amount of people that you have either gained or lost through organic search along with your ranking for the term "seo" And other things you guys must be learning along the way as well. I would also like to know your opinion of having a meter of some sort tell us just how many new people type in Moz vs seomoz I tink it would be a great topic for people to learn about branding from as well as a way to show off your new analytics. Fellow Mozers to you agree or not? ( I now see all the little tricks you guys have been putting in our head by never using seo in branding for a long time aside from of course your name) Great job on the transition. Sincerely, Thomas PS. Did Roger get a new coat of paint or did you just take him to the car wash?

Making the most from a Press Release being featured on news websites
We have recently sent out a press release to targeted publications and have been lucky enough to be featured on a hand full of quality news websites which all feature links to our main URL. A minor draw back is some of the sites have just used the press release with minimal changes so we are a tiny bit worried about duplicate content issues but the sites are all high quality with a Domain Authority of 65+. Anyway I am wondering how best to capitalise on these. A few ideas I have:- 1. Go to our Company Google Plus page and +1 them. 2. Go to our Twitter profile and favourite the "tweets" that have been sent out mentioning each article. 3. Go to our Facebook page and "Like" the articles on each of the sites. 4. Setup a Squidoo page called "My Company featured around the internet" and link to the news pages. 5. Setup a Tumblr page called " MY Company featured around the internet" and link to the news pages. We are not sure if featured the links/urls on our "Press" section will undermine any benefit of link juice - we were thinking of doing a PDF of the pages and hosting the PDF on our site.

Should Global Company List in Local Directories?
Hi All, I am the Web Marketing Manager for a small, yet global, company. I've just started working at this company and I am focusing a lot of attention right now on link building, as the company is not great there in comparison to competitors. So right now I'm submitting us to directories. My question is whether submitting to things like Yelp and the Google Local Business Directory make sense for a global company. I want the inbound links available from those sources, but I just want to make sure I'm not missing something in regards to this. i.e. a pissed off customer could leave a negative review about the company on Yelp. That doesn't worry me, because if a customer is pissed off and wants to vent online, they'll find somewhere to do it. Is there anything else related that I might be missing? Thanks, Ben Alvord

How to capitalize from a press release?
My largest client, a financial services outfit are about to launch a major new service. As part of this, their PR agency is about to issue a press release that will go to financial journalists and the whole stock exchange. Is there some way, as their SEO advisor, that I can increase the impact of this and help them to further benefit? Thanks in advance...
