Proper Use and Interpretation of new Query/Page report
-
When I'm in WMT/Search Console -
- I start a process of looking at all of the data initially unfiltered
- Then I select a query. Let's say its a top query for starters and I filter my results by that top query (exactly)
- With the filter on, I flip over to Pages and I get about a dozen results.
- When I look at this list, I get the normal variety of output: impressions, clicks, CTR, avg. position
One thing that seems a bit odd to me is that most of the average positions for each of the URLs displayed is about the same. Say they range from 1.0 to 1.3. Does this mean that Google is displaying the dozen or so URLs to different people and generally in the 1st or 2nd position. Does this mean that my dozen or so pages are all competing with each other for the same query?
On one hand, if all of my dozen pages displayed most of the time in the SERP all at the same time, I would see this as a good thing in that I would be 'owning' the SERP for my particular query. On the other hand, I'm concerned that the keyword I'm trying to optimize a particular page for is being partially distributed to less optimized pages. The main target page is shown the most (good) and it has about a 15x better CTR (also good). But all together, the other 11 pages are taking in around 40% of impressions and get a far lower CTR (bad).
Am I interpreting this data correctly? Is WMT showing me what pages a particular query sends traffic to? Is there any way to extract the keywords that a particular page receives? When I reset my query and then start by selecting a specific page (exact match) and then select queries - is this showing my the search queries that drove traffic to that page?
Is there a 'best practices' process to try to target a keyword to a specific page so that it gets more than the 60% of impressions I'm seeing now? Obviously I don't want to do a canonical because each keyword goes to many different pages and each page receives a different mix of keywords. I would think there would be a different technique when your page has an average position off of page 1.

Hi Steve
Yes, it sounds like if you're looking at pages showing in search for only one query they may be ranking interchangeably, or simultaneously.
Have you manually performed searches in Google (de-personalized etc) to see if you have multiple pages showing, or if they are switching? Also - do you track daily rankings for these keywords? That's another way to see what's ranking there - rank trackers like Authority Labs will show you all URLs ranking for a query.
Would there be any other reason two different users might get a different page? Location, language?
How specific is the search query vs. how targeted/focused are your pages? Or is there overlap in content? It really depends on the types of pages and content as far as determining your next step. Normally, we do see secondary pages occasionally ranking for one query, but your percentages sound high (unless you are getting two results a page).

Combining products - edit existing product page or 301 redirect to new page?
We want to combine existing products - e.g. 'hand lotion' and 'body lotion' will become 'hand & body lotion'. As such, we'll need to combine the two product pages into one. What would be the best route to take in terms of SEO to do this? My initial reaction is to create a new product page and then 301 or 302 redirect the old products to the new product page depending on if the change is permanent or temporary. Would you agree? Or am I missing something?

Using keywords in my URL: Doing a redirect to /keyword
My website in "On Page Grade" received an A.Anyway, I only have 1 thing to optimize:_"Use Keywords in your URL__Using your targeted keywords in the URL string adds relevancy to your page for search engine rankings, assists potential visitors identify the topic of your page from the URL, and provides SEO value when used as the anchor text of referring links."_My website is ranking in top10 for a super high competitive keyword and all my others competitors have the keyword on their domain, but not for my URL.Since I can't change my domain for fixing this suggestion, I would like to know what do you think about doing a 301 redirect from / to mydomainname.com/keyword/So the index of my website would be the /keyword.I don't know if this can make a damage to my SERP for the big change ir it would be a great choice.

Questions About My Report
Hi, I have a website that aggregates NFL analysis (not news). I write 3-5 line summaries about each article I link, so there is a pretty good amount of daily content. Here's the site: http://www.profootballhotreads.com/ After I received my initial report, there were several issues, and I just wanted to get some thoughts on them. Some of these might be related to the aggregate nature, some might be not a concern, but I want to know which ones I should really worry about. Too many links. My main page is a continuously running scroll of links, so obviously this is going to be tough to accommodate. I know this makes each link less "valuable," but does it actually affect my site in any way? I don't really have links to my site on the page other than in the menu, which I assume would be scrolled first. meta description on tag pages. For site design reasons, I have several "pages" that are actually tag collection pages rather than unique pages. For example, each team's page is simply a collection of anything tagged with that team. So, I don't know if I can provide a meta description for those pages without making that the default meta description for any post with that tag. I supposedly have tons of duplicate pages but when I go to those pages, I don't see it. Webmasters said I only had one duplicate. Not sure what's going on. I'm thinking anytime I update a post, it is reading it as two different posts even though only one post exists at a time on the site. I have tons of duplicate page titles. Basically, I have tons of pages on my main page because after a certain amount of posts, it goes to a "new" page, even though it's just a continuation. So, I have Main page 1, Main Page 2, etc with the same title and meta descriptions. I don't think this is a concern, is it? Thanks for anyone who might be able to help. Let me know if there are more questions. Jason

Use of
Hi Everyone, Encountered this NOHTMLINDEX tag within the section of a website and I am not really sure how it affects the performance of the website and its use. This meta robots tag has been used on numerous pages like the home page, content pages and forum threads. Is it good to keep it there or should it be removed and why? Thanks in advance! Steve

On Page Optimisation Reports
Firstly sorry if this has already been answered - I did look I promise.
On-Page Optimization | | Jock
Secondly sorry if the answer to this is blatently obvious! In the process of trying to optimise my landing pages, I am using On Page Optimisation reports. I have several (ok lots) with F grades which is not surprising as the landing page is not the landing page optimised for a certain keyword. If I change the landing page to the one that I have for a certain keyword then hey presto A or B grade (clever me)! Now here's the thing - presumably the landing page that is listed by default is the one that Google "sees" for a particular keyword. How do I change this if I can or do I have to be patient or am I just being plain daft?! Many thanks0
