Accurate rankings data? software? tools?
-
Hello,
While I am aware that Google rankings are subject to a number of variables, I still need to be able to provide the most accurate rankings data for my clients in their reports. Most recently, I have been using the Google Adwords Planner and modifying by location and/or device. Now, having found discrepancy in the MOZ rankings, I started trying to again find the most accurate tools or software. Could someone please suggest the most accurate tool, and also how the accurate rankings are achieved? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!
Thanks

Addendum to this. You may actually want to look more at the pages you are targeting for those keywords and the amount of organic traffic going to that page. Why? This encompasses more than just what your ranking is, but are people clicking through. We have run experiments to change the meta description and looked at traffic vs ranking. While ranking and click through are related, they are still two different things.
Finally, you have to look at what converts. I like to use Google's page value parameter. I can look at not only what content is ranking and getting traffic, but also what converts. I then use that to better plan my content or what content needs to be updated etc. Get your metrics to tie out to the bottom line and that is what really ultimately what matters.
Cheers!

thanks so much everyone!

Thank you so much for your response. You are absolutely right, and I think I knew it all the time. I just had hoped that I had missed something in my research. I actually just read the Larry Kim article this morning. This was a very well-thought-out response-that didn't just have an answer; but an action to take, which I am ever so grateful for. Thanks!

Clever has nailed the answer. Positions change daily on many SERP's. We use Moz, and Linkdex. It is about money and client funds ultimately and finding a platform you are comfortable with. Sometimes with big clients you need a very impressive chart to show them .. same data as you could have peeled off for free from a google platform... it is almost a function of sales.
The key as Clever has pointed out is to find a benchmark, you feel is solid and put your stake in the ground and monitor the changes and variations from there.
All the best. Here is a website with more listed. http://tinyurl.com/cb8shu7

I was in the middle of very much the same kind of response when an email pinged up with a new answer.
What CleverPhD has stated in his great answer is very much the process I have tried to follow over the last couple of years and I also try and stick to one source for positions, as when compared most other tools they are relatively close to one another.
Secondly as stated again by CleverPhd, people have so much personalisation going on especially with Chrome and Google that I tend to only use the positions as close ballpark figures and hope they maintain the same area.

yes accurate rankings, as all the different top tools are showing different positions.

Your question here is accuracy, but I think you are missing the bigger picture on rankings. Google does so much personalization on search results, there is no single "rank" for a given page on a given key term. If you are signed in, Google will rank pages higher that you visit a lot. Even if you are not, Google may rank pages higher that relate to your geographic location. Whenever a tool is pulling a KW ranking, it is doing so with a set of parameters that may be different than another tool and so the results may vary. Some people have even called them useless http://www.wordstream.com/blog/ws/2014/08/11/seo-rank-checking
Dr. Pete did an article on this recently to compare different methods of measuring rank
While he found differences, they were not that huge across tools.
Your best advice is to find a tool that will report what you need and stick with it. Consistency is the key. That way you can at least know that if there is a change that the change did occur and in what direction. You want a baseline and then to know once you make a change are you doing better or worse. You will find discrepancies if you were to compare Moz, Keyword Planner, Google Webmaster Tools, CognitiveSEO, Authority Labs, etc etc. Everyone measures it slightly differently and you see some differences due to Googles personalization. Heck, take a read of the Search Console Help Google calls is an "average position" due to personalization of results when they show ranking results https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/35252?hl=en

Average position: The average top position of your site on the search results page for that query. With change also shows the change compared to the previous period. Green indicates that your site's average top position is improving.
To calculate average position, we take into account the top ranking URL from your site for a particular query. For example, if Jane’s query returns your site as the #1 and #2 result, and David’s query returns your site in positions #2 and #7, your average top position would be 1.5.
I know this does not answer the question you asked, but I hope it gives you the question you need to understand to put all this in perspective. Get a reputable Keyword tool that gives you the data output that you need for reporting. Stick with it and you will do fine.
Cheers!

Competitor significantly jumped in SERP rankings
We opened a new location in a new market in early February and eventually tapered off improving SERP rankings when we reached an average rank of #3. As we began increasing in ranking, the competitions' average rankings we're declining. Suddenly, in April, one of our competitors spiked to an average SERP ranking of #1. The site that jumped to the top of SERP was a location page and there was no content changes, or changes to their website. Our competitor's links also decreased during the time of this spike. Does anyone have any ideas as to what caused our competitor to spike so high, so suddenly? Thanks,

All metrics appear to be better than our local competitors yet we our ranking doesn't resemble it. Help?
Hi, I work for a marquee company and have recently been really trying to optimise our SEO through good content, link building, social media especially google + and so on. Yet a rival (www.camelotmarquees.com) who performs worse than us for the majority of the moz parameters still ranks better than us in both organic search and google places. The clear and obvious factor they beat us on is internal links which is currently over 15,000 which seems ridiculous for the size of their site, compared to our site of about 120. Would this have that match of an effect on the rankings and how on earth have they got so many? Also is there any tips and advice to help us leap frog them as we feel, we're producing regular, useful content and optimised our site the best we can? website: www.oakleafmarquees.co.uk keywords: marquee hire dorset, marquee dorset, dorset marquee hire, wedding marquee hire

International SEO - How to rank similar keys for differents countries
Hello MOZ friends.
Local Website Optimization | | NachoRetta
I work in an digital marketing agency in Argentina and since we have a lot of traffic from other Spanish-speaking countries like Mexico and Spain, we want to rank specific keywords for these countries.
We were thinking of putting new versions of the homepage in subfolders, for example /es/ for Spain, /mx/ to Mexico, etc. In these new subfolders we would place a very similar version of the homepage with a few minor modifications to work specific keywords in each country. For example, in Spain it is more searched "marketing online", and "marketing digital" is more used in Mexico and Argentina.
I have understood that to implement this we would be to place a label hrflang on the homepage directing visitors and crawlers to the correct version of each country. Is it ok?
Another concern is, whether they are very similar pages, Google does not take it as duplicate content ..
I read this:
https://mza.seotoolninja.com/blog/the-international-seo-checklist
And i am not completely sure about using subfolders for each country, but i dont know how to position diferents keywords for diferent countries.

Will subdomains with duplicate content hurt my SEO? (solutions to ranking in different areas)
My client has offices in various areas of the US, and we are working to have each location/area rank well in their specific geographical location. For example, the client has offices in Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas & St Louis. Would it be best to: Set up the site structure to have an individual page devoted to each location/area so there's unique content relevant to that particular office? This keeps everything under the same, universal domain & would allow us to tailor the content & all SEO components towards Chicago (or other location). ( example.com/chicago-office/ ; example.com/atlanta-office/ ; example.com/dallas-office/ ; etc. ) Set up subdomains for each location/area...using the basically the same content (due to same service, just different location)? But not sure if search engines consider this duplicate content from the same user...thus penalizing us. Furthermore, even if the subdomains are considered different users...what do search engines think of the duplicate content? ( chicago.example.com ; atlanta.example.com ; dallas.example.com ; etc. ) 3) Set up subdomains for each location/area...and draft unique content on each subdomain so search engines don't penalize the subdomains' pages for duplicate content? Does separating the site into subdomains dilute the overall site's quality score? Can anyone provide any thoughts on this subject? Are there any other solutions anyone would suggest?

Do more page links work against a Google SEO ranking when there is only 1 url that other sites will link to?
Say I have a coupon site in a major city and assume there are 20 main locations regions (suburb cities) in that city. Assume that all external links to my site will be to only the home page. www.site.com Assume also that my website business has no physical location. Which scenario is better? 1. One home page that serves up dynamic results based on the user cookie location, but mentions all 20 locations in the content. Google indexes 1 page only, and all external links are to it. 2. One home page that redirects to the user region (one of 20 pages), and therefore will have 20 pages--one for each region that is optimized for that region. Google indexes 20 pages and there will be internal links to the other 19 pages, BUT all external links are still only to the main home page. Thanks.
