PDF in search results?
-
Hello community!
I am not an SEO professional, though I am a practitioner, I would say. I am seeking a solution on behalf of a friend. If you search the term "Peter Blatt" you will discover a "black eye" on the first page, towards the bottom of SERPs. It's a PDF published on the Florida Department of Financial Services website regarding the final order for a settlement he and his company ("Blatt Financial Group") reached with the state as it related to professional conduct allegations.
Does anyone have any advice on how to address this? I don't want "game" the search engines, but at the same time, this document looks really scary and much worse than it actually is to people, and I would love for it do drop below page one.
Any advice or suggestions from the community?
Thanks!
Tom

Tons of good suggestions here. Some profiles that can easily move up high in the SERPs for a non-competitive name search can be:
LinkedIn, Twitter, Quora, About.me, Product Hunt, Medium, Pinterest.
Create a few of these, and link to them from the exact match domains, mentioned by Russ.

Reiterating the points above, it appears that the domain names...
peterblatt.com
peterblatt.org
peterblatt.netAre all available. He could throw up a blog on the first, do some charitable work on the second, and highlight all his social stuff (bringing in twitter, instagram, etc. feeds) on the 3rd.

Hi Thomas,
I have done a lot of this over the last few years - removal of negative / unwanted search results. You effectively need to bury it, as suggested above. I have a little info on my own site here if it helps.
Profiles that I create to help in these circumstances:
- Wordpress
- Blogger
- Youtube Channel
- Tumblr
- Flickr
Google+ posts specific to the search phrase (place phrase in first 50 characters)
However, don't forget to add some content to your profiles. Just creating empty profiles probably wont cut it for you. I would also advise interlinking your profiles to help give them a boost.
You can also write something specific to the subject and use a Google News Submission service (Press Release Distribution) as this can also rank quite highly with a specific subject.

If I would be at his place, I would have created more social profile or may be a new page on my website targeting the keyword and get some links to the page so that when someone search for a keyword they find social profiles and other pages instead of that PDF.
MY advice is to create About.me page, Linkedin Profile, Twitter Profile, Website Page (targeting the specific keyword) and more. As social profiles have higher DA they are more likely to rank better as compare to that PDF.
When more social profile and website pages will rank better as compare to the PDF< the PDF will moved to the 2nd page of Google and more and more people might not be able to see that.
Hope this helps!

Hi Thomas,
I'm completely agreed with above suggestion. I just would like to share one link that will guide you to implement above suggestion.

Hope this helps.

You need to create other social profiles or websites that talk about Blatt Financial group and get them to rank above the page in question. You essentially need to crowd them out as your main option.

Role of Robots.txt and Search Console parameters settings
Hi, wondering if anyone can point me to resources or explain the difference between these two. If a site has url parameters disallowed in Robots.txt is it redundant to edit settings in Search Console parameters to anything other than "Let Googlebot Decide"?

404 or rel="canonical" for empty search results?
We have search on our site, using the URL, so we might have: example.com/location-1/service-1, or example.com/location-2/service-2. Since we're a directory we want these pages to rank. Sometimes, there are no search results for a particular location/service combo, and when that happens we show an advanced search form that lets the user choose another location, or expand the search area, or otherwise help themselves. However, that search form still appears at the URL example.com/location/service - so there are several location/service combos on our website that show that particular form, leading to duplicate content issues. We may have search results to display on these pages in the future, so we want to keep them around, and would like Google to look at them and even index them if that happens, so what's the best option here? Should we rel="canonical" the page to the example.com/search (where the search form usually resides)? Should we serve the search form page with an HTTP 404 header? Something else? I look forward to the discussion.

Link's that are an internal site search?
Hi hope your're all well. I sell Red, Blue, Green Widgets within each color I have many sub types, the subtypes change all the time, and a sub type has many variations in itself. I'd like to set up links that direct customers to popular searches of sub types say: widgets.com/red/blue-spots....search string... Will Google crawl these search links and see that there is good content behind it? How does Google handle links that are also a site search? Can it be bad and should I "no follow" them? Hope someone can give me some direction on these, many thanks in advance!

Advice on improving ecommerce product detail pages to rank better in google search results.
Hi all, I run an ecommerce website, not a great ranked site, however i want to try and improve the product detail pages. To do this, i am first going to focus on 1 page (this one: http://goo.gl/eS62SU) If i type the product code directly into google.co.uk search i am on the 8th page (see https://www.google.co.uk/#q=hac-hfw2220r-z&start=70) which is a bit poor to say the least. I see this kind of thing for a lot of my products. Hence, i am going to see if over the next month or two i can get this one page moving up the rankings purely with on page optimisation. I would like to ask a couple of things: 1. Is there anything that jumps out at you as to why that product detail page could NOT ever rank well, i.e some code / set up of page etc that prevents google ranking it 2. Any advice you could give that might improve that page in rankings for its product code. FYI - I can not change the dynamic URL, I only have control over such things as product name / summary / features / spec etc any advice welcome

Why is a site search query being returned in SE results
Hello One of my top targeted keywords is now linking to the results page of an internal site search query (the search query is for my site url). Oddly, this page does not contain the targeted keywords. My site url used to be the highest ranking page for my targeted keywords. Can anybody advise why this is happening and how I can change it? Thanks Nick

Advice on display this content on my page for search engines
Hi, my website http://www.in2town.co.uk/Holiday-News is about bringing travel and holiday news to our readers of our lifestyle magazine but i am having problems at the moment with the layout. What i mean by this is, i have written content on the page as an introduction so google knows what this section of the site is about but to be honest it looks rubbish with having the introduction there and i would like to know if i am doing the right thing by having the content there for google to know what my site is about. I have tried taking it away and noticed i dropped in the rankings and when i have put it back up i go up in the rankings, can anyone please give me some advice over this issue

Mobile site ranking in desktop searches
A robots.txt file is properly implemented on the mobile site to block Googlebot from crawling, yet, when running a site: query for the site in google, it still returns over 104,000 pages from the mobile site in the index. Why could this be happening?
