Issues with Duplicates and AJAX-Loader
-
Hi,
On one website, the "real" content is loaded via AJAX when the visitor clicks on a tile (I'll call a page with some such tiles a tile-page here). A parameter is added to the URL at the that point and the content of that tile is displayed. That content is available via an URL of its own ... which is actually never called.
What I want to achieve is a canonicalised tile-page that gets all of the tiles' content and is indexed by google - if possible with also recognising that the single-URLs of a tile are only fallback-solutions and the "tile-page" should be displayed instead.
The current tile-page leads to duplicate meta-tags, titles etc and minimal differences between what google considers a page of its own (i.e. the same page with different tiles' contents).
Does anybody have an idea on what one can do here?

Hi CleverPhD,
Thanks for your answer! The website is indeed a little dated and did not consider SEO - or so I have been informed.
http://www.g1.de/projekte.aspx is the URL with the most clearest problems, although similar tiles also exist on other pages. As you can see by checking the code, the URL is changed, albeit in a non-ideal way (parameter) and the page basically stays the same with only a tiny fraction of its content changed.
The USAtoday approach is interesting and I will look into it. I have a slight feeling, though, that the approach is quite a bit different(?).

I would really need to see the page you mention to make sure I am following you, but I think one approach would be that when the page is called via AJAX, call the actual URL, not the one with the parameter. That way you do not have the 2 URLs that need to be canonicalized to start with. You would still need to test this with a spider program to make sure the URLs are found. I am thinking you would also need a sitemap or alternative navigation to allow the spiders to find the pages and get the cataloged.
All of that said, I have to be honest, my gut is telling me that if you are having to work this hard to get the spider to find the URLs correctly, then you may also have an issue with this design being too clever for what it is worth. You may need to rethink how you approach this. USA today uses a setup that seems similar to yours check it out http://www.usatoday.com/ When you click on a tile to view a story, there is an AJAX type overlay of the home page with the article on top. It allows you to X out and go back to the home page. Likewise from the article you can page through other articles (left and right arrows). While you do this, notice that USA today is updating with an SEO friendly URL. I have not tested this site spider wise, but just by the look of it they seem to have the balance correct.
Good luck!

Setting up addon domains properly (bonus duplicate content issue inside)
A new client of mine is using 1and1 hosting from back in the dark ages. Turns out, her primary domain and her main website (different domain) are exactly the same. She likes to have the domains names of her books, but her intention is to have it redirect to her main site. Unfortunately, 1and1's control panel is light years behind cpanel, so when she set up her new domains it just pointed everything to the same directory. I just want to make sure I don't make this up, so please correct me if I'm wrong about something. I'm assuming this is a major duplicate content deal, so I plan to create a new directory for each add-on domain. Since her main site is an add-on itself, I'll have to move all the files into it's new home directory. Then I'll create an htaccess file for each domain and redirect it to her main site. Right so far? My major concern is with the duplicate content. She's had two sites being exactly the same for years. Will there be any issues leftover after I set everything up properly? Is there anything else I need to do? Thanks for the help guys! I'm fairly new to this community and love the opportunity to learn from the best!

Duplicate Content Problem!
Hi folks, I have a quite awkward problem. Since a few weeks a get a huge amount of "duplicate content errors" in my MOZ crawl reports. After a while of looking for the error I thought of the domains I've bought additionally. So I went to Google and typed in site:myotherdomains.com The results was as I expected that my original website got indexed with my new domains aswell. That means: For example my original website was index with www.domain.com/aboutus - Then I bought some additional domains which are pointing on my / folder. What happened is that I also get listed with: www.mynewdomains.com/com How can I fix that? I tried a normal domain redirect but it seems as this doesn't help as when I am visiting www.mynewdomains.com the domain doesnt change in my browser to www.myoriginaldomain.com but stays with it ... I was busy the whole day to find a solution but I am kinda desperate now. If somebody could give me advice it would be much appreciated. Mike

Is duplicate content ok if its on LinkedIn?
Hey everyone, I am doing a duplicate content check using copyscape, and realized we have used a ton of the same content on LinkedIn as our website. Should we change the LinkedIn company page to be original? Or does it matter? Thank you!

A problem with duplicate content
I'm kind of new at this. My crawl anaylsis says that I have a problem with duplicate content. I set the site up so that web sections appear in a folder with an index page as a landing page for that section. The URL would look like: www.myweb.com/section/index.php The crawl analysis says that both that URL and its root: www.myweb.com/section/ have been indexed. So I appear to have a situation where the page has been indexed twice and is a duplicate of itself. What can I do to remedy this? And, what steps should i take to get the pages re-indexed so that this type of duplication is avoided? I hope this makes sense! Any help gratefully received. Iain

XML Sitemap Issue or not?
Hi Everyone, I submitted a sitemap within the google webmaster tools and I had a warning message of 38 issues. Issue: Url blocked by robots.txt. Description: Sitemap contains urls which are blocked by robots.txt. Example: the ones that were given were urls that we don't want them to be indexed: Sitemap: www.example.org/author.xml Value: http://www.example.org/author/admin/ My issue here is that the number of URL indexed is pretty low and I know for a fact that Robot.txt aren't good especially if they block URL that needs to be indexed. Apparently the URLs that are blocked seem to be URLs that we don't to be indexed but it doesn't display all URLs that are blocked. Do you think i m having a major problem or everything is fine? What should I do? How can I fix it? FYI: Wordpress is what we use for our website Thanks
