Two pages for, essentially, the same product.
-
My client currently has a page on their website that advertises one of their products. The product in question is manufactured by someone else but branded by my client.
Recently, the manufacturer have released their own version with their own branding which is available to the public. My client has decided that they are going to stock both their own version and the manufacturers version of the product to avoid losing any sales.
This have left us with trying to find the best way to add the new product to the site without it competing with my clients own product in search engine results.
We want the page to be indexed so that people searching for the manufacturers product can still find it on our site but at the same time we risk cannibalisation and essentially having two pages with what will essentially be the same content.
Does anyone have any ideas for a suitable solution? I am unsure whether we should create a new page for the new product or whether we should somehow incorporate the new product in to the existing page.

No problem and good luck with your endeavours.

Thanks for the replies.
It makes sense to add a new product page for the manufacturers product. As you say, if I make the content as unique as possible and try to focus on the brand then I shouldn't encounter any issues - I will maintain traffic to the original page and will hopefully rank well for the manufacturers product - win win.
Thanks again.

You said that the manufacturer's products have a different branding so for me that's a clear point of differentiation that warrants two product pages. If there are also differences in pricing etc. then that's also a good reason to create the new product pages. If the new pages are optimised for the manufacturer branding and the existing pages for more generic terms then you shouldnt suffer from cannibalisation. The generic keywords should still generate proportionally more traffic to the existing pages, which importantly for your client means more sales of a product which t make a higher margin on.

Even though the products are identical in what they do I would still go down the route of having a separate page for each. We have a client that sells many flea products but have still managed to give them unique product descriptions.
If you are concerned about keyword cannibalisation make the focus for the manufacturer on their brand name rather than the product or what it does.

Is there enough of a difference between the two products that you could write unique content for each? Even if they are the exact same product but with different branding, if the two pages are uniquely written then this shouldn't be too much of a problem. Consider an online furniture store selling a hundred different wooden dining chairs - they're pretty much all the same thing really just with a few variations, but you could still write about each one uniquely targeting brand name, etc.

Will SEO Blogs Divert Traffic from Main Web pages using same keywords?
Our company has drafted several SEO blogs using certain keywords. If we post these SEO blogs to our website and social media channels , and the blog keywords are also used on our main website pages, will the blogs divert or dilute traffic to our main web pages? Thank you for your expertise and insights in advance.

Can You Get Better Ranking/Conversion by Reducing the Number of Pages?
I am seriously considering reducing the number of pages in a section of our website. We currently have 39 webpages. I'm considering reducing it to 6. The site architecture would make more sense giving recent design changes. And we could focus more attention on improving conversions from these 6 new pages. But I'm considering doing this mainly because I think it'll help us do a better job of communicating to and converting our audience. The new pages would be longish. The existing 39 pages are by no means stubs, but these new pages would be longer. Anyway, what I want to put out for discussion is the SEO impact. What are the good SEO reasons for reducing the number of pages? Can 6 well-done pages out perform 39 pretty-well-done pages? How many queries can one page rank for well? Is this SEO suicide? Honestly, there's a part of me that cannot believe I'm saying this, but I think my heart is in the right place.

How many words per page?
I know this has been answered before, but I don't think it has been in about a year (and we all know how quickly the SEO landscape can change). We're having a little debate on it right now and I'd be curious to get some feedback from the community. What is the minimum number of words you would use on a page? Does it matter to you if it's a second tier (website.com/x) or third tier (website.com/x/y) page? It's always a tough sell on design between trying to keep it clean and trying to provide a lot of useful information. I'd be curious what your thoughts are. Thanks! -Adam

I work on a uk decorating website with five of our own bloggers all of which reside on the home page of the website on their own separete blogging urls as sub domains - is this a good idea or would google not like this from an seo point of view?
Should blogs that are part of an overall content site be on separate sites and link in or is it ok to promote them as content on the home page of the site and take users off to their own url to view the site. Is this good practise for seo?

Page Content?
So I have review pages for websites on my site, each website has a review around 400-500 words. Recently I had my writers write 2 additional articles on each site but about something they have there. My thinking was interlinking them allowing them to rank individually etc. However now after looking around etc.. I see that content that is upwards of 1000 words or more might be more powerful and the way this is all written etc.. I could easily put it all on one page.... So my question is do I go with 3 pages or 1 page. I can see strength in both

Does Google really ignore Noindex pages?
Assume I may have some pages of my site that don't have a lot of text on them, and I have to keep them on the site. Let's say there are no more than 50 like this out of 400 great pages, and the ratio of great-to-short pages continues to increase. If I no index the short ones, will Google really ignore them in search? Will they ignore them enough to not downrank my site due to the short, noindexed pages? I know, theoretically, they are supposed to ignore them, but I don't always trust all the rules.
