Community Discussion - Should low-cost content providers be seen as viable options for content marketers?
-
Hello there,
In the latest YouMoz post, "Case Study: How We Gained More than 100 Links for a Travel Website via Content Marketing," Tom McLoughlin recommends an idea for content creation that is sure to elicit strong opinions from all sides:
"Websites like Fiverr and Upwork are fantastic resources for finding freelancers who do great work. It simply takes a bit of initial time to sift through and separate the wheat from the chaff. Once that’s done, give the freelancers a detailed brief and tell them exactly what you want."
What's your opinion? Have you had good experiences using these sites? If so, what have you found as the keys to making the working relationship a success.

I'm a huge believer that you CAN find a great writer on these low-cost sites. But I'm an even stronger believer that you'll (a) have to be very lucky (b) spend a lot of time weeding out low-quality providers and (c) be better off hiring an in-house writer/team to handle the duties.
Based on my experience, however, most agencies creating in-house writing teams fall short in one of two areas:
- Even though they have the staff to create worthwhile, meaningful content, they refuse to commit to quality, focusing more on speed than precision, delivering anemic posts that clients soon see through. When the clients bolt, the writing team is disbanded. The problem was neither the writing team nor the clients. The agency simply lacked the heart to do what was right.
- They create a team of ONLY inexperienced writers, which means the quality of the content is likely to wane over time, and no one is likely to notice until it's too late.

Finding a high quality content writer can be difficult, but it's important to find the perfect fit. I would recommend staying away from Fiverr for content, you can find other skills from the site, but I would recommend hiring a well-known writer.
It depends if you want them to work in house, but usually you can find a decent writer on Craigslist, just make sure they provide examples of their work. Another example would be using LinkedIN, the quality of writer you receive from these two sites will be much higher than Fiverr.

I found an amazing writer on Fiverr. She is based in the US and writes content that need no editing on my part at all.
By the same token, I have tried to find others and they have been absolute pants!
I would say you need to trial a few in order to see who comes up with the best work, and for me, I took a dozen writers gigs and gave them all the same article to write and then reviewed these for originality, research, ease of reading, punctuation, etc. Only 2 stood out and the one I chose was the one who kept me updated and asked me questions.
I don't mind if an article is a day or two late in the slightest, but communication was key.

I have a couple of great Upwork consultants who freelance with me who you'd have to pry from my cold, dead fingers. I love Upwork and I use it to find new talent. Yes, you do have to sift through some bad but it's worth it. When you find the right people to complete your team it's like magic!
Freelancing, I believe, is the way things will mostly all move in the future. I am happy to jump in now and get ahead of those who don't embrace that future.

I've had great experiences finding contributors of all stripe on Upwork (never used Fiverr) — illustrators, copywriters, etc. The best writers won't necessarily be inexpensive, though. It's a recruitment platform like any other.

We're in the same boat, Rk.
We did toy with this idea simply because it would mean reducing the cost of a piece of content for us meaning we could increase profit and lower our prices at the same time - the perfect solution, right?
We now have a strong in-house content team because, as you said, you really want to have those SMEs that understand specific client needs and topics. We figured the money saved outsourcing content to Fiverr was likely to be lost several times over in lost clients and additional editing time so the real end result wasn't as great as we'd hoped.
Of course, this is pure speculation - we never did try it out.
We also provide regular in-house training to keep upskilling out team - something you can't do with a Fiverr gig.

I work as a freelancer and part of my work became content writing. I was very lucky to be picked up from a London agency It takes a lot just getting the content right for the right audience. It took almost four weeks to get to the part where the content will be used.
Fiver freelancer upwork any others
You don't have to pay until you are happy,i would take full advantage of that.Give a good detailed brief and plenty of time. Use star ratting as a guidance. If you can try to have contact before you start jobs definitely worth using that. One though try these words "long term relationship rather than one off".
I have at the same time used writers and had great results. Common sense dictates on getting work done well. If it looks to good it probably is.

After trying out dozens of content writers from Fiverr and UpWork, we have hired an in-house content team just because the quality of the articles from those websites lack consistency. We are a digital marketing agency, and our clients are suckers for consistency - so we had to hire our in-house teams so we can follow the guidelines on the tone of the article, and create subject matter specialists who knows the client's business like the back of their hands.
I am however interested to know if we can create standardized processes, so we can hire any content writer and make this work with consistency and engaging.

How much do I have to differentiate syndicated content, exactly?
We have about 15-20 articles we'll repurpose on a partner domain (think: media outlet). To avoid duplicate content suspicion, how much exactly do we need to differentiate the content on the second domain? Yea, this is assuming we can't obtain a canonical for whatever reason. I've found some good advice here, but am looking for some quantification. Like: "A sentence/paragraph of introduction at the top of the piece, plus a link back to the original at the end of said introduction ought to do it." Any help is appreciated. Thanks! Tim

How do you find your ideas for content
Morning Mozzers, We have finally come to the point where we can start to focus on making good original content. We were wondering how you guys come up with ideas for your content. We are currently doing lots of keyword research to gather ideas and subject areas. But we are struggling with 'angles of attack'. Being an eCommerce site it is easy to do lots of "The 5 best products for this" type of content. But we feel there is limited value in these especially if we want to gain links to our articles in future as valued content. How do you come up with your ideas for more valuable and linkable content especially in very niche product areas. Thanks all.

Tools to created embedded content...
Wondering if anyone has done this before,, this so, would they mind sharing the best approach please. To cut a long story short, one of our seo client is a free UK internet safety resource, backed by (but independent from the UK Govt), the site is heavily talked about by sites such as BBC, Guardian and many more newspapers and as a result the domain authority is creeping up to 90 - Oh to be given the chance to monetise a site with DA 90!!! As you can imagine, with the quality of the links the site picks up, the ranking of content on the site can be fairly easy, but the one problem we are facing is that of sites 'borrowing' our content. These sites tend not to be small bedroom bloggers, but rather all kinds of sites. We have seen our content on UK University websites, Police websites and many more whom should know better. Obviously this is hurting the 'borrower' more than us with regard to duplicate content but it would still be good to get some credit for our work without having to keep hunting the sites down and emailing back and forth. We don't need the credit for backlink purposes but would be nice to have people know we read it incase they want to read more. A solution I have pondered is to create embed options, as per youtube et al. Instead of sites having to copy our content to list it, they can still include our content on their site and avoid any duplicate content issues. As I believe the embedded content will be called from our site (I think that's how a youtube video works) our site would also get the read stats on the content regardless of where is it located. We are hoping that this could become a great content distribution tool, we don't need people to come to our site as the site is non profit, has no advertising but we need to justify the resources we get by showing how many people are reading what we publish. We are never going to be able to stop sites using our content so, like the music industry and itunes, if we can find a legal way to do it then we can all benefit. My main question, yes, I do actually have one!!!, is two fold. Is it possible to create embed for whole articles and am i right in my thinking that if our content is on Jeff's Blog and loaded as an embed then the hit on the content is still reflected in our stats as the content is being pulled from our url? Sorry for the excessively long way of explaining this, any feedback is welcomed, even 'don't do it, it's stupid idea'!!

Is paid content a good or bad thing
Hi, over the past couple of years we have turned down thousands of request from companies to have paid editorial on our sites, I have always turned this down but i have seen some sites accept this and would like to know your stance on this. In newspapers and magazines which i have worked in both, they have paid editorial all the time, so i am just wondering what google thinks of paid editorial. look forward to hearing your thoughts

What is the best practice for using the same content on two pages?
I have two websites in a very similar niche(s)...I have good unique content article that I would like to use on both sites because it adds value to the visitor experience.. Example: Science of Colors would be very useful for my seattle house painting paint colors page. I want to have content so they do not need to leave the site to navigate to second site. Would the identical content trigger a penalty or would it be crawled, ignored, and not indexed. Does having a rel=authorship on one site trump the site..Or is it a pile of BAD.

Displaying archive content articles in a writers bio page
My site has writers, and each has their own profile page (accessible when you click their name inside an article). We set up the code in a way that the bios, in addition to the actual writer photo/bio, would dynamically generate links to each article he/she produces. Figured that someone reading something by Bob Smith, might want to read other stuff by him. Which was fine, initially. Fast forward, and some of these writers have 3,4, even 15 pages of archives, as the archive system paginates every 10 articles (so www.example.com/bob-smith/archive-page3, etc) My thinking is that this is a bad thing. The articles are likely already found elsewhere in the site (under the content landing page it was written for, for example) and I visualize spiders getting sucked into these archive black holes, never to return. I also assume that it is just more internal mass linking (yech) and probably doesnt help the overall TOS/bounce/exit, etc. Thoughts?

Duplicate Content on WordPress Blogs?
We are getting ready to add a WordPress blog to our established website. Our plans are to place it in a subfolder on our website to maximize rank. My question is...Do we need to utilize a Meta Robots WordPress plugin by Yoast or similar so that noindex, follow robots meta tags will prevent search engine indexing of search result pages, subpages and category archives? We want to avoid the dreaded Duplicate Content Error and penalty. Any other great SEO WordPress plugins? Thank you for your time. Brian
