Help! Odd SERP results on two branded terms.
-
We have had the ODDEST thing happen to our Branded search. Last week we started seeing our Women’s subdomain (women.duluthtrading.com) outranking our main Duluth Trading domain (duluthtrading.com) on searches for “duluth trading co” and “duluth trading company”.
Sample of odd results page: http://screencast.com/t/cKgkaYc1
As you can see- our Women's sub domain is ranking #1 then our main domain, THEN what used to be our organic site links are now listing 3-6.
If you search for "duluth trading" though, you will get the typically results page: http://screencast.com/t/qGLDWiM0f
We have been trying to figure out how or why this has happened.
Our website went out for 30 minutes on January 4th. We thought maybe that is what happened but it has now been 7 days.
Any help or suggestions would be great!

Hi There! Thanks for your response!!
I emailed our IT group about the sitemap observation.
The site went down on January 4th. It was only for 30 minutes. We noticed the odd SERP results on Wednesday- January 6th. According to Moz our Keyword rankings for 'duluth trading co" & "duluth trading company" have been all over the place. See here: http://screencast.com/t/Tgc3qZgYrd & http://screencast.com/t/uvgHeRGNy
I also noticed that "https" is showing up and not "http". I'm not sure why that is happening as well...

I'm not seeing anything obvious, but quick question: Did you do anything new recently with your sitemaps or canonicals?
One thing I noticed is that it looks like you have the same sitemap at http://www.duluthtrading.com/data/framework/sitemap/sitemap.xml and http://women.duluthtrading.com/data/framework/sitemap/sitemap-womens.xml, and they look fairly similar or identical to me. If you have the ability, one thing to try might be making the home page the first entry on http://www.duluthtrading.com/data/framework/sitemap/sitemap.xml and assigning it the highest priority. I'd then limit http://women.duluthtrading.com/data/framework/sitemap/sitemap-womens.xml to just women.duluthtrading.com URLs.
You mentioned that the site went down on January 4th. Can you give us any details on that? What HTTP code were you getting at the time? Etc. Did this start happening after that, or did you notice it before the outage? Did it impact the subdomain as well? (I imagine so, but it doesn't hurt to check). Any other changes you made on the technical side around the time you noticed the change?
There's going to be a better answer than your sitemaps and I'll keep looking, but restructuring them is something that you could try to signal your preference to Google. It's weird that it would impact just queries that include co./company though.

In Google SERPs some companies / government agencies have a Google-generated card for their organization and it references their Wikipedia page. It does not show for all companies /orgs that have a Wikipedia page. What is the criteria to have it shown?
Does Google have specific criteria to show a large card in the top right of SERPs that links to a national organization's Wikipedia-referenced info? These do not appear to be the Google Business Card created by individual organizations. Example having the card and org is on wikipedia: https://www.google.com/?ion=1&espv=2#q=u.s. department of labor Example no card shown and org is on wikipedia: https://www.google.com/?ion=1&espv=2#q=Occupational+Information+network

Serps display
Good Morning Everyone, So by now i'm sure you've all heard about the search engines like Google and Bing displaying Emoji's in the Page titles of the SERPS. Does anyone know how to input the emojis into your page title? I have a magento site and have no idea where to find the emoji's and how to place them in the title. Any help/guidance/advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Optimizing for a person with two variations of their first name.
Hello, I am wondering if there is best practices or ideas when doing SEO work for someone's personal name and that name has two variations. So for instance, if someone's formal first name is "James" but they go by "Jim" or "Richard" and "Rick." I thought it might be easy as choosing one and going for it, but this person has a lot of info about them indexed and google and for the most part it is two completely different set of SERP's depending on which variation of the named is searched.

Need advice on old brand names
A couple of years ago my company put all effort into one brand name, closing multiple sites with good names. All traffic going to ie OldBrandName.com is now redirected to www.newbrandname.com/OldBrandName. Here our customers are being told about the fusion/merge and we are linking to the key-products of OldBrandName, on our new age. We have 4 of these pages for 4 different brandnames. These pages still get a lot of traffic. Now to my question: how do I get as much juice as possible out of these OldBrandNames? They have high page authority and many inbound links. But I would like to pass the juice and the links to our frontpage or other relevant pages. What is optimal? Should I just redirect all the traffic to www.newbrandname.com? The redirects was made approximately 2 years ago. We are in the travel & leisure business, so customers often visits numerous times a year, closing deals 1-2 times a year. All 4 OldBrandNames have their own specialities (family, low budget, off-the-beaten-track, wellness). Any recommendations on how to approach this?

Brand SERP Domination
Hi Mozfans, I've been asked by my management to try and "Dominate" our Branded SERP (I've also posted this question as a private question to the Moz staff but would love to know what the community thinks of this or if anyone has "Brand SERP" experience); For our brand name, the first page SERP currently looks like this; ================================ Current SERP 1 (Google UK): Our homepage (with the 6 pack of prominent pages beneath it) An advert that we control An advert that we control An advert that we control An advert that we control One of those random business directories - we don't control the listing Something not related to us at all Something not related to us at all One of those random business directories - we don't control the listing Something not related to us at all ================================ As you can see from the above list, we are already dominating the top 50% of our branded SERP page, however management would like 100% (of course). Now two obvious things that are missing from our Branded SERP page are our Facebook Page and our Twitter Profile, however, how do I get those to rank? I believe I read somewhere (it might have been on the SEOmoz/YOUmoz blog) that the answer is to build links to those profiles (with your brand name as the anchor text). Would that work? We currently use an external SEO company for our link building so could it help if we asked them to build links for us pointing at those two social profiles? Also, are there any other methods for dominating a branded SERP? What would you recommend? Thanks in advance everyone! Regards, Ash
