How to handle multiple domains?
-
Hello,
We are working on migrating a website to a new web server. In addition to the primary website domain, there are several other variations that are owned. Is okay if we point all of our domains to the same IP address as our primary domain, and then setup 301 redirects to the primary domain? Are there any risks in doing this?
There may be about 100 domains. Many of them are different country TLD for same primary .com domain, others including misspellings of primary .com, and some that are not so related to primary domain.
Thank you in advance for your response!

Hey Srbello,
You should be fine, although if your domains are currently on different servers and are linking to each other, there's a chance that moving them to the same server will lower the value of those links.
This has been discussed more in depth here: https://mza.seotoolninja.com/community/q/multiple-domains-on-1-ip-address
Now, as to your redirect question: do you want to merge all of these sites to one domain? Some of them? I'm not sure what your goal is, when you said you'd want to 301 redirect to the primary domain.
Best,
Kristina

While I don't see much of an issue of pointing them all to the new server, why not have a global 301 redirect implemented from your registrar? That way you can bypass even needing to set up each domain within your server configs.

Duplicate content across domains?
Does anyone have suggestions for managing duplicate product/solution website content across domains? (specifically parent/child company domains) Is it advisable to do this? Will it hurt either domain? Any best practices when going down this path?

Expired Domains for Back Links - any good?
I've read that PBN's have been targetted by Google and a recent update may have been brought out targeting these. I was going to search for an expired domain with good backlink profile in a similar sort of niche to me. I was going to buy that domain and build a mini website. I would have registered with a paid shared host of £2-3 per month and have it as a site of its own. Then when ranked on Google so i know its not blacklisted I'd link one link back to my money site. I cant see how Google would be able to penalise this. Im presuming a PBN is a large network of these that are used to link to multiple sites rather than doing what I was planning. Is it a good idea to use the tactic I was going to use or am I asking for trouble?

Domain Authority
Hi I wanted to find out if anyone knew how to discover why DA may have dropped? Ours has gone from 26 to 25 - I know it's not much, but I wanted to find the reason. One thing which happened was our developer company wiped redirects, which did impact rankings - would this also have affected domain authority or do I need to review our backlinks again? Thank you

Should we move a strong category page, or the whole domain to new domain?
We are debating moving a strong category page (and subcategory, product pages) from our current older domain to a new domain vs just moving the whole domain. The older domain has DA 40+, and the category page has PA 40+. Anyone with experience on how much PR etc will get passed to a virgin domain if we just redirect olddomain/strongcategorypage/ to newdomain.com? If the answer is little to none, we might consider just moving the whole site since the other categories are not that strong anyway. We will use 301 approach either way. Thanks!

URL or Domain length
Hi All, I am wondering if google still does give importance to the length of the domain or url. If yes then how much is the acceptable length of a domain and URL. Many Thanks!

Should I 301 a penalized domain to another domains subfolder?
I have a niche domain seems to have been hit by Penguin. It had very good rankings before the update, and I think at least a good part of the penalty might be due to overoptimized anchor text. So here is the question; If I decide to take this site down, should I 301 the entire domain to a relevant sub-folder of another site? i.e comtemporaryfurniture.com to domain.com/category/modern-furniture.html Will the penalty get passed onto the new domain? If the penalty is partly due to anchor text, then pointing it to another site's subfolder would mean the tartget URL has more varied anchor text and could boost rankings.

Multiple city network
Im currently setting up a large network and my original thought was to target keywords via the city and then setting up a website with the domain name being that keyword. Now im thinking that in the long run thats going to be a massive pain in my ass. Im thinking what i should do is something along these lines... "www.companyname.com/cityorkeywordhere" any thoughts? Thanks for the help

Consolidating 3 regional domains
We recently took the decision to consolidate 3 domains for .com.au, .eu and .us. This decision was made before I arrived here and I'm not sure it's the right call. The proposal is to use a brand new .co (not .com isn't available) domain. The main reason is in terms of trying to build domain strength towards one domain instead or trying to grow 3 domains. We re-sell stock simlar to hotel rooms (different industry) and our site is heavily search based. So duplicate content is an issue that we hope improve on with this approach. One driver was we found for example that our Autralian site was outranking out european site in european searches. We don't want to only hold certain inventory on certain sites either because this doesn't work with our business rules. Anyway if we are to go about this, what would be the best practise in terms of going about this. Should we suddenly just close one of the domain and to a * 301 redirect or should we redirect each page individually? Someone has proposed using robots text to use a phased approach, but to my knowledge this isn't possible with robots.txt, thought a phased individual page 301 using htaccess may be possible? In terms of SEO is 1 domain generally better that 3? Is this a good strategy? What's the best 301 approach? Any other advice? Thanks J
