Homepage disappeared from Google
-
Hello,
Since 2 weeks, our website is losing positions in Google. After years on the first page, we dropped for our main keyword to the 3rd page. Seems that all the positions we lost, were ranking with the homepage. Now, we are on the 3rd page but with a less important page.
How is it possible that only the homepage disappeared? Is there any explanation for that?
I hope there is an explanation, so we can fix the trouble.
Kind regards,
Tine

Thanks for your help.
It's strange that the fr. is even working. That should not work, I wrote it in my previous message, but the . was the end of my sentence
I don't think that could be the problem, but it's good to know and to fix it anyway!
-
I wonder if this is a problem?
The canonical of this page http://www.conseilfleursdebach.fr. is http://www.bachbloesemadvies.be
The canonical of this page: http://www.conseilfleursdebach.fr is http://www.conseilfleursdebach.fr/
It is tricky for me to understand what is going on as I'm no linguist so the languages look pretty similar to me. But having a "." after the fr does not result in a 404 but resolves to a page whose canoncal is a different site? So it maybe that you have too many duplicate home pages? I would redirect the one with the "." to the one without?
Not sure if this is helpful or actually a problem but it doesn't seem right.

Hello,
I noticed that the cached version is going to the Belgium website instead of the French website (who is dropped). Any ideas what can cause that?
The content is country specific, there is no redirect, each page has a 200 status, there are no links and Google console is showing thousands of links between the 2 websites... something is going really wrong but no idea what...
-
Thanks for your input. I already thought about it too, I saw the article before, it was around that date that we dropped.
But I don't see any troubles with our website regarding mobile.
-
Is it possible that it is affected by the intrusive interstitials penalty (see here)? I don't see any interstitials on your website but the timing would be about right with the penalty launching on 10 January... although I suppose that wouldn't explain it if your website has dropped in rankings on desktop and mobile.

Hi,
Thank you for your answer. Nothing has changed lately. That's the strange thing.
I checked a lot of info in the Google webmaster tools, but nothing unusual. The page give a 200 status code, the pages indexed are normal, there is no warning or message from Google, robots are not blocking, no meta tag blocking from indexing, redirects are ok, ...
We have a more or less duplicate website but this website is for another country and have some country specific changes. This is already like this since years. The domain extensions are different and the matched the good countries to it.
The website is www.conseilfleursdebach.fr.
Kind regards

Hi,
Have you been working on the website recently in any way? Updates etc? For such a significant drop it will mean that there is something going on behind the scenes rather than an algorithmic update (unless it is a penalty which is a different scenario). Perhaps the 301 redirects aren't working anymore (sometimes with Wordpress updates things can go awry) and you have two copies of the website. I've seen the HTAccess file get updated and that causing the redirects not to work. Perhaps your developer has been working on the website and created copies of some pages but didn't block them to indexing leading to duplication.
First place to look is Google Console and see how many pages are being indexed and whether it is highlighting any issues. Look at when your home page was last crawled by viewing the caching info. Look at the response codes for your pages using a tool like Screaming Frog. Are you getting 200's or perhaps server timeouts which could point to a server issue impacting the website.
It is really like investigating a crime scene and you've got to come at it from all angles.
Good luck

Hello, I have a question regarding the snippet of a specific case: When i search the homepage by searching the business name, i find the correct snippet of the homepage (with the meta description that was entered). If i search it via site:www. it still show the default meta description. Has anybody had experience with this? Is there a way to change the snippet of site:www.? Does it influence SEO? Thank you!

Google Webmaster Tools Parameters
We have several large ecommerce websites, and we've added some tracking parameters to GWT for google to ignore. All pages are correctly canonicaled. Google has been ignoring the parameters and the canonicals, and still ranks many parametered pages for us. Has anyone run into this?

Google and PDF indexing
It was recently brought to my attention that one of the PDFs on our site wasn't showing up when looking for a particular phrase within the document. The user was trying to search only within our site. Once I removed the site restriction - I noticed that there was another site using the exact same PDF. It appears Google is indexing that PDF but not ours. The name, title, and content are the same. Is there any way to get around this? I find it interesting as we use GSA and within GSA it shows up for the phrase. I have to imagine Google is saying that it already has the PDF and therefore is ignoring our PDF. Any tricks to get around this? BTW - both sites rightfully should have the PDF. One is a client site and they are allowed to host the PDFs created for them. However, I'd like Mathematica to also be listed. Query: no site restriction (notice: Teach for america comes up #1 and Mathematica is not listed). https://www.google.com/search?as_q=&as_epq=HSAC_final_rpt_9_2013.pdf&as_oq=&as_eq=&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&lr=&cr=&as_qdr=all&as_sitesearch=&as_occt=any&safe=images&tbs=&as_filetype=pdf&as_rights=&gws_rd=ssl#q=HSAC_final_rpt_9_2013.pdf+"Teach+charlotte"+filetype:pdf&as_qdr=all&filter=0 Query: site restriction (notice that it doesn't find the phrase and redirects to any of the words) https://www.google.com/search?as_q=&as_epq=HSAC_final_rpt_9_2013.pdf&as_oq=&as_eq=&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&lr=&cr=&as_qdr=all&as_sitesearch=&as_occt=any&safe=images&tbs=&as_filetype=pdf&as_rights=&gws_rd=ssl#as_qdr=all&q="Teach+charlotte"+site:www.mathematica-mpr.com+filetype:pdf

Google Cache Is Blank for Text-only
Hi, I'm doing some SEO for www.suprafootwear.com, and for some reason when I go to text-only in google cache, nothing shows up. http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:suprafootwear.com&es_sm=91&strip=1 That seems to be the case for all of the different pages on the site, but the content is still appearing on the serp. I have never seen this before, and I'm not sure what's happening. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Google Penguin Penalty
Howdy Guys,
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | ScottBaxterWW
We have been battling our way the Google penguin penalty and have just received our 3 knocked back reconsideration request. I posted a find on here the other day about a simple change of page title made our site jump back up... In the meantime I've built 1 hight quality link back to our site and we have moved again from #50 to #46.Have Google ever removed a penalty without telling you?Should we ask for another reconsideration request? Thanks,

Google plus
"Google+ members, and to a lesser extent others who are signed into Google, will be able to search against both the broader web and their own Google+ social graph. That’s right; Google+ circles, photos, posts and more will be integrated into search in ways other social platforms can only dream about." What is meant by " and to a lesser extent others who are signed into Google" ? Does it mean that non-google plus members won't be able to view Google+photos, posts ?

Multiple Google Places Listings?
Hi everyone. While I have read answers regarding this on Mike Blumenthal's blog, I have not been able to get an exact clarification on having multiple Google Places listings. According to Mike Blumethal, Google accepts multiple listings in the Places area for specific industries. e.g. One listing for a Dental office, one listing for EACH dentist. This could include a separate website for each. If this is the case, how far away are we from having one maxed out business owning muiiple positions in the local listing space in the search engines. specifically Google? I would love a good explanation of what is and isn't allowed to have multiple listings.
