Help with steps to take when fixing cannonical url structure?
-
I would like to 301 redirect all the variations of my site to a single url but would like some clarification on some issues. I have always been confused about how to handle cannonicalization and hopefully this can clear it up for me and others.
This particular site is about 1 year old and gets approximately 15k uniques a month in a great niche. I want to make sure I do this correctly as to not hurt my existing rankings which are quite good. Here is is what I am unsure about.
- Basically I should pick the best url structure to redirect all the others to correct? What determines what url is best to redirect all the rest to? is it www.domain.com, http://domain.com or http://www.domain.com?
- Is the best one to redirect to always standard and something I should set up at the beginning of my site? Or is picking the best url to redirect to based on what url starts to rank in google and you then use that one?
- Should I be going through each of my rankings and seeing what url is ranking in google for each page? On this particular site ALL of my urls in google have no www. or http but instead show up in the SE as domain.com or domain.com/inner-page/html. In that case what do I do?
- I know the slow way to do redirects. I use my hostgator account and do it in cpanel and do it one by one. Is there a faster way where I can go and make lots of changes at once? Maybe I can choose all the variations and put in the one I want them all to redirect to?
- After I figure the above out is fixing all of this as simple as redirecting ALL variations to the one I will use moving forward for each page on my site? Then I am done?
Thanks again for the help!

is there a simple code I put somewhere in there?
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^mysite.com$
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.mysite.com/$1 [R=301,L]replace "mysite" with the name of your site
do you see on there that he says its important to leave trailing / on folders
Generally speaking a URL that ends in a slash represents a folder. A URL that ends without a slash represents a page or file.
With respect to www or non-www, there is absolutely no preference from a pure SEO perspective. Either way you chose I would use the http:// prefix as it represents the complete URL.

Awesome Ryan! Thank you. This kind of stuff is the part I am SO lost about. I bet I would increase my rankings 500% if I could figure out the technical stuff!
Ok just quick clarification.
So there is no "better" version between http:// and http://www.? That is what I thought but on this guide it says that http://www. is best? http://static.seomoz.org/user_files/SEO_Web_Developer_Cheat_Sheet.pdf
I guess to be safe I could do that but I wonder if it really matters? Also do you see on there that he says its important to leave trailing / on folders.
I do know how to access my htaccess file is there a simple code I put somewhere in there? I am going to go with http://
Thanks for the awesome help!

What determines what url is best to redirect all the rest to? is it www.domain.com, http://domain.com or http://www.domain.com?
The "http://" portion is required for a complete URL. "http://www.domain.com" is the same as "www.domain.com". If you omit the "http://" prefix, all major browsers understand your request and will prepend the URL appropriately.
You can choose either the "www" or "non-www" form of the URL to represent your site. It doesn't matter to search engines. What does matter is that you make a choice and remain consistent.
For an existing site, examine the links you have to both URL forms. As a guide, I would recommend choosing the URL format which has the most authorative linking domains.
Is the best one to redirect to always standard and something I should set up at the beginning of my site?
Yes. You should choose before the site begins attracting traffic.
Should I be going through each of my rankings and seeing what url is ranking in google for each page?
You should make one choice for your entire site. It would be a really bad idea to have some pages use the "www" subdomain while others do not. You would be dividing your traffic into two separate domains which you do not want to do.
Use OpenSiteExplorer.org and Google WMT to determine which domain has the most linking authority.
Is there a faster way where I can go and make lots of changes at once?
You can redirect your entire site with a single statement in htaccess. Since you are using cPanel there is probably a "Redirect" application you can use to make this change. I would recommend contacting hostgator and informing them of your wishes. It is very quick and easy for a managed host to make the change for you. If you are not familiar with the process, it is far better to allow them to make the change for you.
Summary: review your backlinks, make your choice, inform hostgator and request them to make the change. After, test the change. If you choose to keep the "www" prefix, try accessing a few pages without the prefix. You should reach the page and see the "www" portion added to the URL. If the process is set up correctly you are 100% done.
Some SEOs may advise you to use canonicals or update your choice in Google/Bing Webmaster Tools. You can do both but once you set the redirect correctly the results will take care of themselves. Expect it can take up to a month for all of your URLs to appear correctly in SERPs. If you update the change in WMT, it will appear faster in SERPs.

Folders in url structure?
Hello, Revamping an out-of-date website and am wondering if I need to include the folders (categories) in the url structure? The proposed structure has 8 main folders. I've been reading that Google is ok if the folder is not included in the url, but is it really? The hesitation I have is that the urls are getting long and the main folder only has only a sub folder beneath it. So, /folder-name/facility-name/treatment-overview. This looks too long, doesn't it? Thanks!

Website Redesign - Blogger To WordPress Platform URL Structure
I am transferring a website (www.EXAMPLE.com) From Blogger To Wordpress. Currently, the website content is specific to cover the Colorado Market. In the near future, I plan on covering the same market in other state. I have seen regional websites like this that have the URL structure - (STATE.EXAMPLE.com) I have also seen websites with URL Structure - (EXAMPLE.COM/STATE) Is there any advantage using one URL structure over the other in term of SEO & otherwise? In the process of transferring the website, I would like to clean-up the URL structure but I don't want to lose a significant amount of link juice/organic traffic. Do you recommend I restructure the URLs at this time?

Domain Forwarding Help
A friend of mine is a domainer and he wants to forward 21 parked niche specific domains to my site for extra type-in traffic. This will turn out to be 30 extra hits a day. Obviously, since these are parked domains, the SEO benefits are none, we just want the traffic. My questions is how to do it. These are his parked domains, and will not be redirected forever, is a 302 redirect the best plan here? He planned on just going into his hosting/domain admin and selecting "forward domain" -- is this ok too? Also, he would prefer to forward these domains to a single domain he owns, and then forward that single domain he owns to my domain. So someone who types in one of these 21 domains will go typindomain.com ---> hisredirectsite.com ---->mysite.com any implications here? What is the best option and how to do it? Thanks

Help us define a category/product structure please
Hi, Apologies in advance for the long winded question... we need some guidance with our category/product/options structure in our shop. We primarily sell car parts and lots of our parts have multiple fitments for what is basically the same part. Some ranges can have 1,000s of products. We can't work out what is an appropriate level of information and granularity for our product structure. We recognise the importance of having fitments and specific terms in the product title and URL, but we also know that having loads of almost identical product pages is a definite negative and fragments our SEO potential. But where's the happy medium? For example, let's say we have a specific brand of brake pad (we'll call it Brako) with 4 different product-models (Super1, Super2, Super3, Super4), each fits 100 different cars, which are made by 10 different manufacturers. We have a few different ways of presenting/splitting up these 400 simple products: (ignore the URLs here, this is just to illustrate the browsing structure & likely product page titles) 1 category for the Brake Brand with 400 product pages inside, 1 product page for each specific combination of brake product-model and car-fitment. /Brako/Brako-Super1-brakes_BMW-M3.html 1 category, 400 product pages, 0 choices on each product page. 1 category for the Brake Brand with 40 products inside, 1 product for each specific combination of brake product-model and car-manufacturer. Each product page would then let you choose from a dropdown which of the 10 specific cars you had. /Brako/Brako-Super1-brakes_BMW.html 1 category, 40 product pages, 10 choices on each product page. 1 category for the Brake Brand with 4 sub-categories inside for the brake product-models with 100 products inside each, 1 product for each specific combination of car-fitment. /Brako/Brako-Super1-brakes/Brako-Super1-brakes_BMW-M3.html 1 category, 4 sub-categories, 40 product pages, 10 choices on the product page. 1 category for the Brake Brand with 4 sub-categories inside for the brake product-models, with 10 products inside each.1 product for each specific combination of brake product-model and car-manufacturer. Each product page would then let you choose from a dropdown which of the 10 specific cars you had. /Brako/Brako-Super1-brakes/brakebrand-Super1-brakes_BMW.html 1 category, 4 sub-categories, 40 product pages, 10 choices on each product page. 1 category for the Brake Brand with 4 products inside, 1 product for each brake product-model. Each product page would then let you choose from 2 dropdowns, each with 10 options: one for car manufacturer, the next for car model. /Brako/Brako-Super1-brakes.html 1 category, 4 product pages, 100 (10x10) choices on each product page. 1 product page containing options to choose all 400 Brako products using 3 drop down boxes: Car Manufacturer, Car Model and Product-Model /Brako/Brako-brakes.html 1 category, 1 product page, 100 (10x10) choices on each product page. Or we could mix it up and split the sub-categories by manufacturer: 1 category for the Brake Brand with 10 sub-categories (1 sub-category for each of the car manufacturers with 40 products inside each), 1 product page for each specific variation of car-fitment and product-model. /Brako/Brako-brakes-BMW/Brako-Super1-brakes_BMW-M3.html 1 category, 10 sub-categories, 40 product pages, 0 choices on the product page. 1 category for the Brake Brand with 10 sub-categories (1 sub-category for each of the car manufacturers with 10 products inside each), 1 product page for each specific variation of car-fitment. Drop dowjn box on the product page lets you choose product-model (Super1-4) /Brako/Brako-brakes-BMW/Brako-brakes_BMW-M3.html 1 category, 10 sub-categories, 10 product pages, 4 choices on the product page. 1 category for the Brake Brand with 10 sub-categories (1 sub-category for each of the car manufacturers with products inside each), 1 product page for each specific variation of product-model. /Brako/Brako-brakes-BMW/Brako-Super1-brakes_BMW.html 1 category, 10 sub-categories, 4 product pages, 10 choices on the product page. Obviously, option 1) is going to be the best search match for someone searching for 'BMW M3 Brako Super1 brakes' but that page will have almost identical content to 100 other pages and very similar content to a further 300 pages, which takes it's quality ranking down a lot. At the other end of the scale of complexity is option 5) which concentrates all search potential for the Brako Super1 down to a single page, which can be well written and have great content, but wouldn't have a match in the title, url or product name for anyone searching for 'BMW M3 Brako Super1 brakes'. 'BMW M3' would be mentioned in the page, but only once in a drop-down along with 100 other cars and possibly once in the content if there's something noteworthy about that application. So which option would you go for and why?

Changing the URL structure will it help me or hurt me?
I got handed a website running on Joomla without the SEO friendly URL check box selected so our URLs all look like this www.rotaryvalve.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=22&Itemid=37 . I am hoping to rework this website in the near future here and plan on changing the URL structure across the website so there are some actual keywords in the URL. When I did this I was thinking of just doing 301 redirects to the new pages and hopefully the hit from the search engines wouldn't be too bad. Can anyone speak from experience as to what the best way to go about doing this would be so I don't end up falling back ranking wise. Would change the URLs end up helping me or hurting me? Thanks
