Reducing Amount of Text on Web Pages-Risk of Killing Ranking?
-
We are a commercial real estate brokerage firm in Manhattan. Our site (w w w . m e t r o - m a n h a t t a n . com) is text heavy and somewhat uninviting. Ranking is fair. Conversions awful. Our niche is very competitive.
We plan on reducing the amount of text and making the site more visual. Among the planned changes:
-Reduce amount of text in home page and text heavy pages. More emphasis on product (listings)
-Much larger photos for listings
-Lighter cleaner design with more open white areas
-Use of more visible fonts
-Better formsNew design will be like: http://www.dernieretage-paris.com/
Theme and graphics based on Manhattan. More visuals. Better photos. Less text.
But are we shooting ourselves in the foot by reducing text? Is there a risk that Google will reduce our ranking?
Can we compensate for reduced text that is visible to visitors by completing meta tags more fully?
Any thoughts???
Thanks,

Hi Kingalen
I honestly would not use that French site as a model for your own. The homepage is just one big banner and you have to scroll below the fold to search anything,
In my experience, the best home page for this type of site is one big search box in the middle with little opportunity to refine it until they get some results. You have to hook them in with the minimum of fuss.
It's not the amount of text on the homepage but how relevant it is and quite frankly it just drones on about expiring leases and out of town businesses needing a rental. Keep it focused and succinct.Go to MOZ keyword explorer or any similar product and type in 'Office Space New York' and look down the most searched keywords. 'New York Office Lease' as well and write clean contextually strong copy for the home without overdoing it and trying to rank for every keyword you can think of.
Then when a user has clicked on say, Bryant Park, show them the listings. Not just one or two at the top with a link to 'view all' and the rest of the page thick with content - Give them what they want as quickly as you can, and if then add some local area content with a map and image with alt saying 'Bryant Park' below the listings.
It seems to me that someone's attempts at novice SEO has ruined your site and you need to simplify and make the object satisfying your customers as quickly as possible rather than filling the site with cannibalising content and needless words.
Of course, Meta is important for SEO so make sure that yours are optimised 'Bryant Park Office Space for Lease' you have 70 characters so. use them.
Use one (1) H1 on the page! - for some reason your logo is an H1 - Use a logo with an Alt tag - 'Metro Manhattan Logo'
Then the other H1 'Bryant Park Office Space' is OK, grab a photo of Bryant Park and Alt it 'Bryant Park Office Space' and use just 3-500 words per page and you will be fine.
I hope that helps.

Take a look at the Paris website in Moz Tools. It's not ranking for anything. There's zero content.
You have to have a compromise of text and SEO visibility. Having a pretty site with lots of photos and white space won't do you any favours and will have a negative impact on your ranking.
Stick to 400 words text on the home page and 300-400 on your category landing pages. Alt tags on all images with keyword rich descriptions. In Wordpress add tags and categories to your blog posts. The last one was in January 2017. This doesn't look as if you care about website maintenance.
Meta tags are not SEO.
Content is king. Use internal linking. Add sales text to increase your conversions.
Yes your website looks outdated, just a spruce up should increase conversions but don't lose the textual content.

Consolidate to one robust web property?
I am new at my company. I was brought on to generate more leads via their websites. Although, they aren't letting me do what I think is best. So I need help convincing them. Can you please help me prove them wrong? We are an online reseller/distributor. We sell our products under one brand. We sell a wide variety of widgets that are manufactured by several different companies. We have 9 unique web properties and 50 landing pages. Each website and landing page is on a unique domain, design, and purpose. I would like to consolidate everything to one robust, e-commerce website that will reside on our primary domain. My bosses are convinced that more websites are better because it will prevent our competitors from ranking above us. We can "block" them from ranking on all the main keywords. They are also convinced that domain name plays a major role in SEO. But I've got that part covered What do you think?

Best practices to rank a new website that does not produce much content.
Hi What would be the best practice for ranking a new site .. lets say a business site that does not have a blog to produce regular content in it. Building backlinks are not just the options when these days people are all focused in content marketing. And specially, when you are competing against big competitors. Big competitors are of course getting their contents published on bigger sites since they are already established. No one will talk about you when you are new in the market. And you still need to bring up your site to people and SEO is the only option for that. What would you suggest ? Thanks

Case Study Formats - On-page vs. PDF
Hey all, I've been thinking about the pros and cons of case study formats (On-page vs. PDF), and was curious to see what you all think. An on-page case study is crawled by search engines and has fewer barriers in terms of visibility. The only pros I can think of for a downloadable case study (with no opt-in) is that it's less likely to be plagiarised (generally a low priority) and can have a custom design that may not fit with your website's look and feel without clashing. Also, I suppose it makes it easier for visitors to save the PDF for future reference. Have I missed anything? Do you have a preference? Keen to hear which you prefer, and why. Let's brainstorm! Cheers,

YouTube won't let me disconnect a Google+ business page from my channel.
Hello! Here is a good one. My YouTube channel is connected to a Google+ page a created by accident. Since I named this accidental page as a business, when I go into advanced setting to disconnect it from YouTube, it says "This feature is not available for this account." Does anyone know a way around this? I don't want to have to rebuild my Google+ page on the new, accidental page. I have put quite a bit of time onto my current page and would like to get it hooked up to YouTube. Please help! Thank you!

Page 1 Rankings, but not increase in traffic, contact form requests or calls
I am very frustrated. I have achieved page one rankings on Google, Bing and Yahoo for highly relevant keywords and phrases. The keywords I am ranking on page one for are the same ones competitors are targeting and working well for them. I am interested in any feedback as to what could possibly be the cause for not receiving much traffic? I mean I am getting page 1, everyone I talk to says the sites are beautiful....Very confused. Now in the various keyword tools the do show that the various keywords receive anywhere from 25-250 searches per month, but those tools i find highly innacurate when performing a local campaign...oh yeah, these are all local campaigns i am talking about. Do I need to pursue paid marketing, PPC, or something. I always thought organic rankings were the way to go. Also, unfortunatly i am not able to divulge the URLs or concern due to client confidentiality issues. Thank you very much in advance for any insight:) I will send the URL's privately to anyone that is willing to take a look at things

Has anyone got any hotel (small) web marketing tips or tricks
I have a client who ranks well for his boutique hotel both in Google search and Google places. The problem now is he needs to fill his rooms next week (type of thing). We are down the Google Adwords route already. But clicks are super expensive (competing against the big hotels). We have also been trying to get his social media rolling and have started a light ad campaign on FB but I can't see clicks translating into our Google analytics account. (so not sold on it but is a lot cheaper than Google adwords) Next on the list is email marketing which we be getting ready for next week to his existing database. And we have been thinking about paid Press Releases but not sure if its worth it. (PRWEB or Prnewswire) One big bonus is he got a number 1 award on Tripadvisor a few months back (which radically spiked hits on site). So, a more long term solution is to approach media directly with a follow up story to the award but that's going to take a bit of time. Anyone had any experience with hotel marketing? Any insights would be great. Thanks

Missing Title Pages
So, one of the campaigns I am running has 90 pages with missing titles. Normally I would consider this a very bad thing, BUT, the pages are product description pages. The referring pages are product listings, and the pages without titles, are small pop-ups. For example on a bigger stage: Nike has a product page, when you click on a shoe, a small window pops up with price, description, etc. How important/ vital/ relevant is it to have titles for these pop-ups, if it is even possible. Thank you in advance!
