Does Google index search results pages for other search engines?
-
I've noticed a lot of backlinks to sites consist of SERPS from other search engines that Google. A link to a query like: http://searcheninge.com/?q=apple for instance. Does Google index these links and do they give any value?
Regards,
Henrik

1. Does google index these links?
In order for Google to index a page it needs to be able to crawl it. Crawlers are not able to activate functions on websites like 'search' or 'submit' buttons. Pages that you can only get to by submitting information cannot be indexed.
For example, if you enter a competition online, very often you will need to enter your name and email address and click "Submit". You are then sent to a page that says 'thank you for entering'. This is an example of a page that will never be indexed, unless somebody links directly to it. (and its not blocked by robots.txt, but that's another story)
In the same way, the crawlbots cannot do a search on Yahoo and then index the results page. The only way Google can index these pages is if somebody saves the SERP URL and then links to it from somewhere that the googlebot can index.
So the answer is yeah, Google indexes some of these pages, but only a small few of them.
2. Does Google give any value to them?
As Ronan said, search engines are just like any website, so their pages are just like any pages. It's unlikely that a SERP has a lot of inbound links (unless it's a particularly hilarious/interesting SERP) so the value of their link juice is unlikely to be very high.
Let me know if any of that doesn't make sense and I'm happy to clarify - reading back it is quite heavy!

Hi Henrik,
Yes, Google will index all the pages it crawls on the internet unless it is told to "noindex", the value of the link is the equivalent that Google would give to any website which is based on it's own algorithm.
After all, a search engine is just another website.

What are the SEO challenges associated with private search engines, like DuckDuckGo?
I read recently that DuckDuckGo doubled in size in 2017. With their search engine, and other alternatives to Google, taking part of the search market away, how can SEO/Marketing/Web pros keep their websites optimized and get traffic from these private search engines? (Also, do any of you have experience with this? What portion of your search traffic is coming from private search engines?)

Sitelink (meta) descriptions in Google SERP
Hi, I am probably not the only one having this question regarding the quality of sitelinks in organic results. When your search returns sitelinks, I know the only thing you can do to avoid certain sitelinks to appear is to demote it for that search result. But what can you do about the description. For the main result you are pretty much able to create an appealing description, but when the sitelinks appear, all sitelinks display these crappy 'composed' descriptions. I've read Google did some tests a couple of years ago with multiple descriptions and multiple titles, but this doesn't cover the issue I just described. Is there a way to create 'sitelink descriptions'? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Does my website need a search bar?
We're redesigning our agency website and during development we noticed our current design doesn't feature a mock up for a search bar. It was a simple oversight, but it got me thinking how valuable it really is. I noticed the Moz blog doesn't have a search bar (unless I'm blind) and was wondering who else has made the decision to get rid of it. We have a blog of almost 400 posts over the course of three years, unsure if that sways the decision in either direction. Is it better to just focus on good SEO instead of relying on a search bar nowadays? Opinions appreciated!

Deleting a duplicate google places listing
Hi i currently have duplicate Google places listings for a store. One of the Google Places listings is mine (which is correct) and the other is a listing which someone else put up (which is wrong). Which is currently sending customers to the wrong location. I tried to claim the listing by clicking: If you own this place, claim it and edit it directly Which takes me to this page: This Listing Is Unavailable You may only access listings that you own. If you created this listing with a different Google Account, please log in to that account and try again. If you've deleted this listing, you may create it again in Google Places. Is my own option at this stage to leave a comment with additional details use: IMAGE ATTACHED And select 'this is a duplicate listing'? I would imagine this would take sometime, and i need it changed as soon as possible. Any suggestions? screenshot_133.jpg

Bing index
Hi Guys, This is an interesting one. I've recently been looking into Bing and trying to get my company's website ranking for relevant search terms. So I typed in site:www.sparkstone.co.uk and was shocked when only 13 pages were returned. So I signed up to bing webmaster tools and started submitting URLs manually as well as a sitemap. However i've just gone back to check expecting to see more pages being indexed. Sadly only the homepage has been indexed. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Thanks, Dan
