Is 11k-30k search traffic too high for a small blog with low domain authority to compete for? Is competition all that matters?
-
Trying to decide on a keyword phrase for my next post. One of the two phrases I'm deciding between has 100x more traffic but the priority is wayyy higher and the competition is just one point higher (54 vs 53). I'm hesitant to write on a post that gets 11k-30k monthly volume however b/c it just seems like too much traffic for a small blog with a domain authority of only 18 to compete with. But if the competition is nearly the same and the priority is higher, should I go for it anyway? I generally go for things with lower traffic thinking I will be able to better compete. Thanks!

Write the post. Get a couple of links into it. Look at where the competitors got their links into their competing page. Try to duplicate their best links.
Go after the primary keyword. Give it your best shot.
You might not rank on the first page after the first month. But, give it a year... and if your content is really better, I believe that you might move up.
** We can definitely write better content.** If your content is really better I think you will move up.
If you are targeting a high traffic, big money keyword, there will be lots of traffic and lots of money changing hands. You will get long tail traffic and long tail money. In time you might hit the big time.
It is a mistake not to try this a few times. You only need one to connect.

Thanks for the detailed response! My concern was that even if we wrote better content that we would not be able to climb the rankings past blogs or health care sites/major hospital systems that have a blog with much stronger domain authority. We can definitely write better content.
Thanks again for taking the time to respond. Very helpful.

You are asking a question of "philosophy" rather than "numbers". Before I get to the philosophy, here are some facts.
-
Your present domain authority means nothing. If you do a great job, your domain authority will grow.
-
The present size of your blog means nothing. If you work at it, it is going to grow.
What means something is your ability to produce competitive content and the amount of work you are going to put into your next post.
To determine your ability to be competitive, go search for that keyword phrase and look at the content in the top ten positions. Determine its quality. HOW GOOD IS IT? Then decide if you can beat it. Be honest. Can you write content that will be better than what is out there? Not a little better. A lot better.
If your answer is yes (meaing that you can beat their content). Then do not fear competition or traffic or any other metric. You should attack. Why? Because where there is competition, there is a lot of traffic and a lot of money changing hands. Even if you do not rank #1 you might connect with that traffic and with that money. Attack with the best content that you can produce, good enough that it is truly competitive.
If your answer is no (meaning that you can't beat their content). Then, you are not the person to compete here. Your prattle will not rank against the heavyweights. You need to pick a keyword phrase where you have the ability to compete. Attack there.
Can't find a place where you can compete? Hire someone who can. Get education and writing skill so you can compete. You will not get very far going into battle with a rubber sword.

-how to use it in yoast keyphrase input? should i use exact match of the focus keyphrase in the input? as you know Google is capable of recognizing the separate words from longer search terms, even if the words are not in the exact same order as the query. I searched many days but unfortunately i couldn't find anything about how to use keyword or long-tail keyword inside the article step by step.0 -
9600 exact searches position 3 but only 125 clicks????
Seeing something a little strange on one of my clients sites. They are position 3 in Google and the only result on the page Google Authorship installed on their site. Exact match terms in the UK via Keywords tool are 9600 yet they only get 125 clicks on average for the month. There rank has not changed in the last 3 months and they have had a solid position 3.

Is there a point in ranking non-competitive terms?
Hello, I wanted to know if you could still make $$$ of a term that is not competitive for people. For example if a keyword is a quote, an idea, topic, or something that isn't real but still brings more than 1K exact search a month (Several terms come out to more), how can this be monetized? If it can't, could you just own one to show off?

Big discrepancy between search volume and actual traffic
I've been seeing this more and more... a page that ranks well for a great keyword but the traffic is much, much less than one would expect based on information from the Google Keyword Tool. The keyword gets 3600 searches locally, but the site, #9 on the SERP, got 11 visits last month. Does that sound like a plausible drop-off or is there something else at play? Thanks!

Keyword analysis/optimization for blog sites (avoiding self cannibalization)
Hi there, I work on a site that has regular blog and article posts (or at least, we're shooting for regular), and I'm trying to work on a fluid approach for keyword analysis and optimization. I am wondering...is it best to research new keywords for each new post? I am unsure of what the effect is of optimizing multiple pages for the same keyword. I've been using the SEOmoz report card tool to grade my on page optimization, and I noticed one of the criteria was to avoid self cannibalization. Will I be competing against myself if I optimize multiple pages for the same keyword? I'm worried about what will happen in a month or two when I run out of common keywords and have to start optimizing our latest posts around really obscure keywords. Am I thinking about this the right way? Thanks!

Domain Name - Which is better?
I had a friend of mine ask me this question and I didn't really know how to go about answering. He wants to know if, for example, www.cardealer.net is better than www.car-dealer.com or vice-versa? Both seem to be interchangeable to me. I hate websites with dashes in them but obviously it is necessary in some cases... ".net" is not my favorite either. What would you recommend?
