Plan for Analyzing and Optimizing Internal Link Structure
-
I've noticed that our site has what appears to be a poor ratio of external-to-internal links. I know there are no hard and fast rules in SEO but generally I've come to understand that this ratio should be relatively balanced, and in some cases I've seen some correlation of high-performing/ranking sites closer to 70-30 (external-internal). I'm not going to get into specifics, but our ratio is well-below 50-50 (heavy on internal links compared to the volume of inbound external links).
My hypothesis is that this is diluting the link equity/authority for the domain. Moz's tools don't really provide any data beyond the initial data point of the volume of internal links compared to external. Being that I've never really gone down this rabbit hole before, I'm wondering if anyone else has ever experienced anything similar and could point me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance for any assistance or guidance!

I completely disregard those numbers. Completely.
On an informative site, I would use every genuine text connection in Article A as an opportunity to link it to other articles on the website. If you look at wikipedia articles, you will see an example of what I am talking about. We make those hyperlinks bold on our site becaused we believe that bolding increases the number of times visitors will use those links (and generates more pageviews that are monetized by ads).
On a retail site with related content articles we have two approaches.
1) On the article pages that explain the use, maintenance, selection, etc. of retail products, we use bold hyperlinks to direct the visitor to: A) pages where mentioned items are sold (this is done to help visitors easily connect to a sales page while information about the article is immediate in their mind); and, 2) pages where informative articles about that same product are located. This is very similar to the linkage on informative article sites.
- On pages where products are sold we cut back on linking, and focus on linking only to pages were accessories are sold; and pages where important information about the item being sold is explained. This decreased linkage is to help the visitor maintain their purchase intent, yet give them easy access to accessory purchases and the most important product information.

What is more important, page authority or linking root domains?
I have 2 pages in my report that are identical: www.ferringway.com (more page authority......21 vs. 1) www.ferringway.com/index.php (more linking root domains...... 40 vs. 21) Which one should I delete or should I do something like a 301 redirect? Your help is greatly appreciated! Sheryl

Links don't add up
Sorry if this is obvious, but I'm new to seomoz. I've run an analysis for one of my pages and it's showing 624 total links - 118 internal and 6 external. Why doesn't the sum of the internal and external links equal the total links?

On-Page Optimization Report: How Are Keywords Chosen?
Apologies if this has already been covered 100 times! Last month I set up a new campaign, and so far the On-Page Optimization tool has only crawled and graded three of my pages so far. I assume it takes time for more pages to be covered? But, here's my real question: I see that the tool is giving my pages grades based on certain keywords, but the tool itself seems to be deciding which keyword to use in grading each page. To use a made-up example, my example has a page about leather gloves, a page about wool mittens, and a page about cotton mittens. The last one is supposed to be optimized for the keyword "cotton mittens," but the tool is grading it based on how well it's optimized for "wool mittens." I can go into the drop-down at the top of the page and change the keyword that the page is graded on, and that gives me a new grade, but only for that instance. The next week, the tool is back to giving the page an F for "wool mittens." Is that because the tool decides that "wool mittens" is the keyword for which the page has the best chance of ranking, no matter what my intentions are? is there any way to permanently tell the tool that I want the page to target "wool mittens" as its main keyword? Thanks in advance for your help!

More than 100 links
Hi Everyone, I was trawling through You Tube and came across this video from Matt Cuts from Google about the 100 links limit being removed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6g5hoBYlf0&feature=relmfu I then logged into my SEO account as I remember a previous report we did for a competitor where they had quite a number of pages just over the 100 links, but only barely (They are highlighted in SEOmoz as a warning). Given that google has removed this number from their guidelines and it's clear that a few over 100 isn't as bad as it used to be, is it not about time this was changed or looked at again? Maybe even put ones like these under a new title such as recommendation rather that the alarmist Warning one unless it's ridiculously high? I wonder if the SEOmoz team can also find out a better range figure for it instead of the outdated 100? Regards Alan watch?v=l6g5hoBYlf0&feature=relmfu

Question to SEOMOZ when will the On-Page Optimization tool be Updated
Hi, When will your On-page Optimization Tool be updated to reflect the Over Optimization Penalty which is coming. I would think that grading out at an 'A' will have adverse effects.

What is the best link building management tool ?
What is the best link building management tool that can automatically fill in content for submission for me, check whether my sites are submitted on other sites, propose new lists of submission sites, organize my link building (by date, anchor text, url, page rank, both back links, reciprocal, paid, etc), organize my social media profiles and connect them to each other ?

How long will it take for the link analysis to be updated?
In an effort to evaluate SEOmoz I started off my free trial with a fresh website that I am going to get to rank on the first page and hopefully to the #1 spot. I have been link building and changing the website around a lot. When I created the website hosted by HostGator with wordpress installed I marked down where it showed up the first time. After checking for many days to about the 100th spot I found it in spot 65. I have since then been spending some time (not a ton of time, but enough) guest posting, some bookmarking, press release creation and some other odds and ends stuff. The page has gone up to 23rd but there have been no signs of any work done on the link analysis. So, How long does it take?
