Is article writing and submission for link building a good idea in all circumstances?

I'm attempting to build links for a seafood market / restaurant and I'm finding my creativity and knowledge of SEO being stretched, which is a good thing of course. Can you help me grow here?
I have the client interested in writing articles but he has little time for this. I want to make sure it is worth it.
Is article writing and submission worth the time and effort for a business like this?
How would I go about link building though articles for a small business like this?

Try the following search in Google www [dot] CompetitorSite [dot] com "Article" OR "Author" -site:www [dot] CompetitorSite [dot] com this should show you what they are doing
(with the [dot] chnged to .)

Daniel, There are many ways to take advantage of links via writing articles for a restaurant. Guest blogging on other site that give reviews, writing your own blogs to include recipes, and submitting writing guest blogs for general restaurant or cooking sites. Most will allow a link back to the source if the article is written well.
http://www.squidoo.com/ comes to mind, but there are many, many more.
The key here is to have something of high interest to attract people. If you write a blog on your site, make sure you post on Twitter and Facebook. Recipes or cooking suggestions would be great for sharing on those platforms. When you do this, make sure you have both the Facebook Like button as with the Share this chicklets (the ones that show how many shares) as this encourages people to share when they see others doing so.

I suggest you to take your 3-4 competitor and see which type of link do they get from opensiteexplorer, starting from the juicy one.
After a while that you look at your competitor link profile, you will start to see pattern. Link acquisition pattern. So you will find that in your niche, one of the best strategy is for example to get review from blogger website. Or that you could get link from specific directory / website.
My suggestion is to calculate cost / benefit for each of those strategy, and then to start from the strategy that have the best ratio overall.

External resources page (AKA a satellite site) - is it a good idea?
So the general view on satellite sites is that they're not worth it because of their low authority and the amount of link juice they provide. However, I have an idea that is slightly different to the standard satellite site model. A client's website is in a particular niche, but a lot of websites that I have identified for potential links are not interested because they are a private commercial company. Many are only interested in linking to charities or simple resource pages. I created a resource section on the website, but many are still unwilling to link to it as it is still part of a commercial website. The website is performing well and is banging on the door of page one for some really competitive keywords. A few more links would make a massive difference. One idea I have is to create a standalone resource website that links to our client's website. This would be easy to get links from sites that would flat out refuse to link to the main website. This would increase the authority of the resource and result in more link juice to the primary website. Now I know that the link juice from this website will not be as good as getting links directly to the primary website, but would it still be a good idea? Or would my time be better spent trying to get a handful of links directly to the client's website? Alternatively, I could set up a sub-domain to set up the resource, but I'm not sure that this would be as successful.

How hard would it be to take a well-linked site, completely change the subject matter & still retain link authority?
So, this would be taking a domain with a domain authority of 50 (200 root domains, 3500 total links) and, for fictitious example, going from a subject matter like "Online Deals" to "The History Of Dentistry"... just totally unrelated new subject for the old/re-purposed domain. The old content goes away entirely. The domain name itself is a super vague .com name and has no exact match to anything either way. I'm wondering, if the DNS changed to different servers, it went from 1000 pages to a blog, ownership/contacts stayed the same, the missing pages were 301'd to the homepage, how would that fare in Google for the new homepage focus and over what time frame? Assume the new terms are a reasonable match to the old domain authority and compete U.S.-wide... not local or international. Bonus points for answers from folks who have actually done this. Thanks... Darcy

How do I get the best from our Blog and build quality links and drive traffic to our site?
We have recently setup a Wordpress focused blog (blog.towelsrus.co.uk) which is very much work in progress. Because of financial constraints we had to host this on a separate sub domain. I need to get to grips with blogs is new to me (only been doing SEO this for 3 months now) and have have read may posts on the forums here that this is one of the best ways to build links and engage the audience. How do I go about getting people to read my blog, and should I use this to pull in traffic on keywords we cannot through the main site or should i use this to re-enforce and build traction on those keywords we are trying to rank for on the main site?

Planning a Link Building Campaign: Which keywords to focus on?
Okay, so looking at my ranking tab for my campaign. It shows the increase in traffic from my keywords, ranks, etc. My goal is to increase traffic, thereby sales. I am trying to plan a link building campaign (aside from the onpage optimization) and get as many keywords within the top 10 as possible: Do I start focusing on a certain number of keywords that are on page 2 (lets say 10) and try to build links to get them within the top 10. Then pick another 10 keywords? Do I pick a variety of keywords from various pages? What is the smartest way of trying to optimize campaign keywords as far as linkbuilding?

I have a great idea for a contest that will generate links...but how do I promote it when I have little traffic?
I'm working on a new real estate site and I've got some great ideas to generate links. One of these ideas is a pretty neat contest. (I'd tell you what it is, but really...this is one of those ideas where people will go, 'Man! I wish I thought of that', so I want to do it first before anyone else steals my idea. 🙂 ) The contest involves readers submitting photos and other readers voting on them. I anticipate it will generate some good press both locally and internationally if I can get enough submissions. But, the question is, how do I get contest submissions when I don't have good traffic yet? Once I've got some good submissions, I'll contact some media, spread it amongst my personal fb friends, etc. Any ideas are welcomed!
