SEO Virgin - how shall I start ?
-
Hello everybody,
I'm pretty new to this whole SEO world but Im willing to do my best to learn the most crucial things in order to optimize our site for it.
I've purchased the pro option and hope to get some insights into areas that need to optimized in order to get a great ranking by google.
I've already started with share linking and social media activities, in order to build up links to our sites.
Since our community will be a specified media sharing portal, Im not quite sure how I should start the linking process besides posting some relevant articles on digg, delicious, facebook, etc, incl. relevant links and content...
I read in some of your forums that you would not recommend to pay for links.
So how shall I start with the onpage optimization and link building process ?
Appreciate your help!
Thanks a ton!
M.

SEO encompasses many things and it keeps changing.
It's easier to understand all of the articles on this site when you can visualize the process step-by-step. That's why I recommended Dover's book. He covers the information from a consultant perspective.
Watch all of the Whiteboard Fridays. You shouldn't need much background information to understand them. And most of them are only ten minutes a piece.

Pay particular attention to Rand's Whiteboard Friday discussing the new Panda Update and what it means for SEO:

Hi Daniel,
I've read the beginner's guide already.
Let me get your recommended book then.
Is there anything else you'd recommend to start off ?

There are many articles on this site. You should read through the beginner's guide if you haven't already:

SEO Secrets by Danny Dover is a great book to get an overview of the SEO process, especially for on-page optimization:

And to answer your question, I'd pursue on-page optimization first.

Backlink Transparency with SEO Agency
Hello everyone. I recently started working with an SEO agency and today they gave me an updated keyword report which showed some increase in rankings. I was not aware that any backlinks had been created yet so I asked for a report of the links. Their response is below and I am just wondering if this is normal practice being I have not worked with any type of SEO agency yet. "

Hey Daniel, We release a small report on them which the guest blog team will do soon. We don't reveal all backlink sources unfortunately because people have tried to bother the webmasters we have and basically steal our techniques. But rest assured you will be ranking at the top of the pack with our methods 😃

Can piracy sites linking to you hurt your SEO?
Hello, Our website sells software that we have developed, but there are piracy websites that offer a crack/keygen to our software and are linking to our site. From an SEO perspective, are those sites hurtful to us if their spam score is below 30 and their DA is not 1? We'd like to understand if there is any action we need to take from an SEO point or if our site's SEO is not affected by it. Thank you!

Do links from such sites as TripAdvisor give any weight or support for SEO
And what about other sites like quora or other niche forums/blogs where one might leave answers, with a link to their profile, which has a link back to the owner's website? _Cindy

Do inbound links to download .exe files improve SEO?
The site, (http://www.bartenderbarcodesoftware.com/) sells barcode software. They also provide free printer drivers on their site. During a recent domain change (before I started helping them), they began looking at their inbound links and found quite a few external sites linking to these download files. However, when someone clicks on the link on one of these sites (i.e. http://vvs-motor.com.ua/barcode-printer-drivers) it immediately begins downloading the file (i.e. http://www.seagullscientific.com/downloads/drivers/archive/7.2/7.2.4/Unimark_7.2.4.exe) without taking the visitor to the site. The owner would greatly prefer this traffic to engage with the site and is considering 301 redirecting those download links to an actual webpage. Question: Would this look suspicious to Google? Would this have a positive or negative effect on SEO? The last factor to consider is that many of these sites will likely just recreate the list based on the new links at some future point. Thanks for any help!

SEO Fightback
I just got a spam email company (SEO FIghtback) that claims they can create backlinks through trusted Wordpress networks that cannot ever be rejected by google. I believe it to be just another linking company wanting to suck $97 bucks a month out of me, I thought I would ask the experts on this site. The video was cool....for about 30 second......but that is all I could handle. It ultimately became one of the most irritating commericals ever and truly grated on my last nerve. Thanks

Penguin: Carry On & Hope Or Start A New Site
I'm at a loss and no so-called SEO agency/expert I've hired appears to know the main causes of our post-Penguin downfall of our traffic. To set the scene, I set up a voucher code site (www.ozvouchercodes.com.au) in Australia 3 years ago and since, it's been growing very well up until Google launched the Penguin update in April. Having read as much as I could on the update my understanding is toxic links cause the slap. For on-site I've checked the site and tried to reduce keywords [spamming], increased [unique] content across the site and made sure there are as few instances of duplicate content as possible. To attempt to understand my back link profile I've used SEOmoz & Link Detective as the current SEO agency give me little visibility on this. It appears we're a little top heavy with 32% & 11% of are keywords containing 'coupons' and 'promotion codes' respectively. Consequently we no longer appear on those two terms but also hundreds of other terms we once appeared in the top 3 postitions. The Link Detective report downloaded also appears to have a number of back links with the words 'Penalized' and 'Banned' next to them. Unfortunately there is no explanation on Link Detective whether this needs action or not. My current SEO agency suggest that we have been too focused on a limited number of keywords and that a few more months of diversifying the range will solve it. So do I spend another £X amount for 3-6 months of SEO or drop the site on a new URL and start again. Any ideas? Any help is very welcome & appreciated. Henry

Should I create a LinkedIn page for my website? We teach english lessons by skype and I am not sure if it is worth it to create a company on LinkedIn and link to it from my site? Will that get me some good SEO points? Additionally I don't want to fork over 20$ to LinkedIn if I don't have to. Thank you dudes!
