Best way to Handle Pagination?
-
At the moment I my blog is paginated like so:
/blogs > /blogs/page/2 > /blogs/page/3 etc
What are the benefits of paginating with dynamic URLs like here on SEOmoz with /blog?page=3
-
No I meant use /blogs/ as the first page and /blogs/pX for the next pages, X being the pagination number. These pages are valid and are not 301 of course.
BUT, /blogs/p1 is the same as /blogs/ so you should 301.
AND you must be aware of inexistent pages in the pagination (p10000 because you don't have 10000 pages of paginated results; /blogs/p01 or /blogs/p02 because these pages should not exist)
-
I wouldn't be comfortable 301'ing those pages like you said. I want my users to be able to navigate through earlier posts rather than just being redirected to the blog homepage. Perhaps you mean rel canonical redirect?
-
This won't make much difference, I usually use these urls though :
/blogs/
/blogs/p2
Remember to 301 /blogs/p1 to /blogs/ and to 404 pages with a page too big /blogs/p10000 or strange urls /blogs/p01
-
I was wondering the same thing and tried it in multiple ways. I got similar results SEO wise, I don't think it ultimately matters. What matters is how it looks to your users and a proper sitemap.
-
Thanks Dan. I would robots.txt the pages but I still want the links on those pages to flow PR - so I really need to noindex, follow them but WordPress is being difficult!
As for SEO differences, you're probably right. I think I just prefer the look for dynamic URLs than /dir/page
-
I don't think it makes a difference either way. One advantage to your current pagination is that if you want to block those pages you can robots.txt block the /page/ directory and that handles that. Not sure how SEOmoz would go about it with those dynamic URLs. From an SEO perspective I don't think it matters either way.

Best way to deal with over 1000 pages of duplicate content?
Hi Using the moz tools i have over a 1000 pages of duplicate content. Which is a bit of an issue! 95% of the issues arise from our news and news archive as its been going for sometime now. We upload around 5 full articles a day. The articles have a standalone page but can only be reached by a master archive. The master archive sits in a top level section of the site and shows snippets of the articles, which if a user clicks on them takes them to the full page article. When a news article is added the snippets moves onto the next page, and move through the page as new articles are added. The problem is that the stand alone articles can only be reached via the snippet on the master page and Google is stating this is duplicate content as the snippet is a duplicate of the article. What is the best way to solve this issue? From what i have read using a 'Meta NoIndex' seems to be the answer (not that i know what that is). from what i have read you can only use a canonical tag on a page by page basis so that going to take to long. Thanks Ben

When rankings dip what's the best diagnostic procedure?
Bonjourno from 10 degrees C lighly raining Wetherby UK 🙂 Every so often SEO feels like a game of snakes & ladders. One minute your rankings go up and then then within the click of a mouse they drop back down. Like a Greek play you begin to feel our mortal lives as SEO pundits is controlled by the Google Gods. A case in point is illustrated here in this graph:

Go to webmaster tools and check for crawl errors 2. See if a Google algo change has changed the rules of engagment 3. Check another site administrator hasnt tinkered with the original layout But i wonder what process do other SEO practitioners follow to explain to a disgruntled client - "Why have my rankings that i pay you to look after nose dived?" Any insights welcome:-)0 -
Best META Fields to Include on New Site
I am in the process of transitioning sites to a Drupal CMS and am curious to know what META information to provide on each of the new site pages. Currently, this is the set-up I plan on using: My questions to the community are: whether or not I've added all pertinent information, and if there's anything I'm overlooking

Optimal / Best Practice Title tag
Hi Guys, Am I write in saying google will take / create many variable from your title tag? Graphic, Web Design and Online Marketing in Ireland | Company Name results: Graphic Design, Web design, Web design in Ireland, Online Marketing in Ireland, Online Marketing, Graphic and Web Design, etc etc. (plus lots of long tail there as well). Would this be considered the optimal way as 'Design' is the common denominator for Graphic & Web. Then Ireland can be common to every other keyword such as Graphic design, Web design, Online Marketing. (in ireland) The reason why I ask is: lately I've notice title tags being stuffed with keywords and don't actually read correctly in the SERP My suggested way could have more benefits plus it reads well. Your thoughts, thanks.

Best Redirect for old .htm extention to root ?
I have been trying to figure this out with different redirects but cannot seem to get this correct. Some of our forums link to pages that do not exist or are very old. They have (.htm) extension. I do not want to redirect the .htm to .php because the actual names of the link have changed too. What is the best code to redirect any link that has a .htm extention to the root domain? right now I have this code to redirect index.htm to the root, but that is all it works for. I think. RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^.*/index.htm RewriteRule ^(.*)index.htm$ http://www.example.com$1 [R=301,L]
