Redirect gateway domain to main domain?
-
We have following scenario:
Our main website - www.esedirect.co.uk which gets a 1800 visits a day with around half of those from organic search. It's been around since 2004.
Our original website - www.ese.co.uk which gets around 30 visits a day and really is nothing more than a doorway page with links to the above site and couple of other sites that belong to the same company. This is an old domain that's had content since 1997 and has good domain authority with some good links.
We are considering doing a 301 redirect from www.ese.co.co.uk to www.esedirect.co.uk to redirect the link juice.
I welcome opinions to any possible negative effects this could give and how beneficial doing this will be.
Thanks,
Lee

Hi Lee,
Just a quick reply on that score is just to make sure you double check your on-page optimisation for ese and then ensure all your off-page work, including link building reinforces that brand.
You may also find that the 301 redirect may help boost esedirect for 'ese' anyway. I have a client who is still ranking well for an old brand since his 301 was put in place, even though the old brand isn't mentioned on the new site. Your sites should be in an even stronger position given the consistency of brand name.
All the best with it!

Hi Martin,
Thanks for your advice. It is likely we will go ahead with the redirect.
The ese.co.uk domain has ended up being a gateway page for our company which has three divisions each with their own website. However our main division ESE Direct is the only one that's doing well online. For this reason and in conjunction with a re-branding exercise the ESE Direct website is becoming our main site and our main brand. To some people the company is known as just ESE and the ese.co.uk domain ranks well for 'ese' and this is about the only traffic this domain gets. My main concern is that by redirecting ese.co.uk to esedirect.co.uk we many loose the traffic we currently get for customers searching 'ese'.
Thanks,

I'm not sure what others think, but I think you're actually going to be better off doing the redirect. If there's one thing a site shouldn't be is a doorway page to another site.
So, what I suggest is to do the 301 redirect to capture any people who visit it and bring them into your 'real site'.
Before you do this do a download of all your existing links into ese.co.uk and then methodically go through them and ensure they point directly to esedirect.co.uk.
That way you get the link juice in the short term, but after the 301 'value' has diminished, the updated links will have the full value for esedirect.co.uk.
If there is any content of value on the old site, maybe bring it up to date and relaunch it on the new site after the 301 redirect as well.
Hope this helps!

Redirection of 100 domain to Main domain affects SEO?
Hi guys, An email software vendor managed by a different area of my company redirected 100 domains used for unsolicited email campaigns to my main domain. These domains are very likely to get blacklisted at some point. My SEO tool now is showing me all those domains as "linking" to my main site as do-follow links. The vendor states that this will not affect my main domain/website in any way. I'm highly concerned. I would appreciate your professional opinion about this. Thanks!!

Redirecting Ecommerce Site
Hi I'm working on a big site migration I'm setting up redirects for all the old categories to point to the new ones. I'm doing this based on relevancy, the categories don't match up exactly but I've tried to redirect to the most relevant alternative. Would this be the right approach?

Redirect to url with parameter
I have a wiki (wiki 1) where many of the pages are well index in google. Because of a product change I had to create a new wiki (wiki 2) for the new version of my product. Now that most of my customers are using the new version of my product I like to redirect the user from wiki 1 to wiki 2. An example of a redirect could be from wiki1.website.com/how_to_build_kitchen to wiki2.website.com/how_to_build_kitchen. Because of a technical issue the url I redirect to, needs to have a parameter like "?" so the example will be wiki2.website.com/how_to_build_kitchen? Will the search engines see it as I have two pages with same content?

Should I redirect my Google Update Effected Domain to brand new Domain?
Hey Moz experts, I had a domain which was really doing better but after the Humming Bird update my traffic was decreased up to 90%. There are plenty of posts on my existing blog, Now what should I do? I mean should I redirect it to a brand new domain or Copy all the posts to a brand new domain and delete my existing domain? Note that the Old domain has PR1, DA 19 and PA 30.

Redirection Effects on Sub Domain
Hi, I would try to summarize my query through an example. Lets say site A (www.siteA.com) have two sub domain (subdomain1.siteA.com & subdomain2.siteA.com) and another site B ( www.siteB.com ) have no sub domain. Due to some obvious reason we need re direct the site site A (www.siteA.com) to site B ( www.siteB.com ) and one of the sub domain (subdomain1.siteA.com) to site B (subdomain1.siteB.com). Now the question is that in case of ( subdomain2.siteA.com ) can we keep the sub domain to site A even though site A has been re directed to site B ? Reasons for keeping this can be traffic, earnings etc. Is it possible to keep it like that or provision for further optimization? Plz help.

Multi domain redirect to single domain
Hello, all SEOers. Today, I would like to get some ideas about handling multiple domains. I have a client who bought numerous domains under purpose of prevent abuse of their brand name and at the same time for future uses. This client bought more than 100 domains. Some domains are paused, parked, lived and redirected to other site. I don't worry too much of parked domains and paused domains. However, what I am worrying is that there are about 40 different domains are now redirected to single domain and meta refresh was used for redirections. As far as I know, this can raise red flag for Google. I asked clients to clean up unnecessary domains, yet they want to keep them all. So now I have to figure out how to handle all domains which are redirect to single domain. So far, I came up with following ideas. 1. Build gateway page which shows lists of my client sites and redirect all domains to gateway page. 2. Implement robots.txt file to all different domains 3. Delete the redirects and leave it as parked domains. Could anyone can share other ideas in order to handling current status? Please people, share your ideas for me.

301 from penalized domain to new domain
I have a client whose site isn't necessarily penalized since they still show for many terms in the SERPS, however at one point they did an xrummer blast of 13,000 links for two anchor texts they were trying to rank for. They have purchased a new domain and have gone white hat and want to 301 some of the old site to the new purely for the users sake so past visitors still find them at t the new location. Will creating 301 redirects pass on to the new domain any bad Karma from the old one in Google's eyes? Thanks for the help.
