#1 with grade F page optimization
-
For a specific keyword we rank #1 in Google. Nevertheless, I got a Grade F on SEOMoz regarding page optimization. All comments were certainly true.
On another keyword (keyword 2) we got a grade A, on this keyword we rank #3.
Strange enough I did linkbuilding on keyword 2 to the page regarding this keyword. I did not do linkbuilding for the first keyword.
How can this be explained? Both keywords have average competition.

Did SEOMOZ pick the right keyword for your page? I've had SEOMOZ tell me a page was a F after picking the wrong keyword. Once I picked the right keyword the same page got an A.

"Domain authority 82"
There's your answer right there - that's a fantastic link. One to cultivate and track. Hopefully you can be a resource to the domain again sometime. Perhaps the topic can be updated year by year etc.
-
The page with keyword 1, which ranks 1 in Google for this keyword, has an incoming link from a domain with Domain authority 82. And has just a few other incoming links.
The page with keyword 2, ranks #3, has much more incoming links but with lower Domain and Page authoroties.
Regarding internal links: Both pages are direct links from the main menu and no other incoming internal links.
-
How do the back link profiles compare? One really good link for keyword 1 could be enough to propel it to the top. Alternatively, perhaps it gets better treatment by your internal link structure.
Another thought: competition is usually a measure of how many pages are returned for a search but it doesn't get into how well optimized those pages are for a given term. It also doesn't measure the authority and trust of the domains. It could be the competition for the first keyword is low value domains and unoptimized pages.

Is it worth getting a backlink to a page that will be 301'd?
I have an opportunity to get high value backlinks (from the Emmy's) to a landing page before our new website is live. The backlinks won't be free and they would go live before the website is live. Is it worth spending the money if the landing page will be redirected once the site goes live?

Need advice: How to replace a high-ranking pdf with a landing page -- without dropping much in rank?
Hi! We have a pdf of a white paper on our site that ranks #1 for a niche term. We are now exploring the idea of building a landing page for this paper with an overview (2-3 paragraphs) and a registration form for interested parties to fill out in order to access the paper. Do you think there'd be any hope of ensuring the new landing page would rank almost as well eventually (top 3)? I'm thinking a key consideration would be preserving the link juice from the existing links that are coming into the pdf, and that 301 redirecting the pdf URL to the new landing page URL could help with that. Am I right? Or would it be better to try to reach out to the linking sites and ask them to update their links (seems daunting). Any advice/opinions on this situation would be appreciated. (If folks think that there would be a significant risk of permanently dropping out of the top 5 by attempting this, we would likely choose to leave the pdf ungated as is.) Thanks!! -John

One page hit with 10K no follow spam links, should we disavow?
Hi everyone, I'd like your opinions on the best way to handle this situation: One particular site page just got hit with 10,000 no follow spammy backlinks over 10 days time. I've read that it's pointless to use the disavow tool on no follow links (since it basically does the same thing) but we want Google to be aware that this WAS NOT US and we don't want to be penalized for these spammy links. Couple of questions: 1. Do we send backlink removal requests to each domain webmaster? 2. Should we skip removal requests and move right to disavow? 3. Should we take other action? As a site we have NEVER used any black hat SEO tactics over a 15 year history and have many HQ do follow and no follow links to the site and this particular page. Thanks for any suggestions in advance!!

Is Penguin 2.1 an actual penalty?
By that, I mean that does Google just devalue spammy links, or does it devalue the links and penalize your site on top of it? Does it hit specific keywords, or does it have effects site wide? Does penguin run constantly, or only on specific days? If spammy links are removed, how long does it take to recover?

PPC Landing pages and SEO landing pages query
We do a fair amount of work on PPC and because of this a lot of our PPC landing pages also do quite well in SEO. We are thinking that the landing pages do well because they get a lot of traffic from PPC and therefore, maybe google can index and take note of these pages quicker? The pages that usually shoot right up the rankings are new pages used for long tailed keywords. So I have a few questions: Does the traffic from PPC actually have any effect on SEO rankings? If we were to create a page that was to act solely as an SEO landing page, would google take note if there was no traffic? Would simply linking from our main site to the landing page be enough to give it a bit of authority, in which we can build upon? Thanks in advance.

Too many internal links to a particular page?
I have read all the data regarding the number of links per page, but my question has to do with the number of internal links to a particular page. After looking at some of the competition inside Open Site Explorer I can see that the competitor in question has a much smaller number of links going to the desired page then the site I am comparing. The competitor is outranking a page that should be ranking higher due to higher page authority and external root domain links. Internal Links to Page: 9,950 Competitor Page Internal LInks: 208 Is this a situation where the sheer number of internal links is discounted because of page rank distribution throughout the site? Just want to get some clarity here. Thank you for your responses.
