In Need of Excel Formula to Manage Export from Adwords Keyword Tool

Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone had an excel formula that they use to manage large amounts of data in spreadsheet exports from the Google Adwords Keyword Tool?
Specifically, I am interested in something that establishes a solid corollary between a given keywords competition score and the amount of local/global monthly searches.
Any suggested ideas or methods are very welcome. Thanks!

Yes actually it could be amzing, some calcuation we could do to ad coef to our searches numbers, competition and suggested bid to prioritize our keywords !

In Excel, you create the formula once in the first row, and then double click on the bottom right corner of the cell and it should populate the rest of the data in that column with that formula. It's called the fill handle - double click it and it will fill the whole column.

Haha, I actually just realized that I will only have to punch the formula in on a row by row basis once; after that I can simply arrange the table columns in the same way and copy the KEI column with the formulas into the new doc.
Might be a little time consuming the first time, and you probably wouldn't want to do it for a spreadsheet containing more than a couple hundred keywords, but not bad overall.

I did find something that seems to work pretty well. the formula is _=(B2^2)/C2 _where column one is keyword, column two is local monthly searches, and column three is competition. The KEI formula goes in column four.
This is all well and good, but it takes quite a bit of time to adjust this formula row by row; any ideas on how to simply apply this to the entire table?

I created a pivot table for you based on a kw export I did from adwords - you could play around with it a bit more, but basically, it groups the terms into groups of competition, and then sorts keywords by highest local US volume. This sounds like what you were looking for - hopefully it helps. Here is a link to the Google doc in Drive - good luck and let me know if you need help replicating it.

PS I found that www.wordtracker.com which is a great software has a lot of information on this. I don't want to make you keep clicking on links however I think this is a great place to start if you haven't found what you're looking for.

KEI - Keyword Effectiveness Index (either tool):
KEI is one of the quickest ways to find keywords with good potential - that is, those keywords which are likely to help your site attract more traffic.
It's a banded metric, so you'll never see a KEI of more than 100. That doesn't mean that we can go back to the old method of thinking that a KEI of X or Y is good, or that a KEI of Z is bad - it's still important to look at the numbers as relative values inside a niche - what might be a good KEI for one niche may prove not to be so useful inside another niche - so do look at the relationships between the figures in this column rather than just relying on pure numbers.
So how do we use KEI? Simple! There are two ways that we can find helpful figures - we're looking for a high KEI as these are the keywords that show potential. The first thing to do is to sort the column by KEI just by clicking the column header. We can see the highest ones at the top of the list instantly, so look for the keywords that are relevant to your business.
The second way you can narrow down your list according to KEI (if you're familiar with the market you're targeting and have a rough idea around search behaviour in that niche) is to use the filters on the right to exclude keywords with a KEI below a certain figure - you'll probably get more of a feel of what to exclude the more you work with a niche.

primarily going to create excel style sheets for you. The only issue with the tool is that it is free up to only 500 pages.

I suppose another way to phrase this is that I am looking for an Excel formula to help me determine KEI, or Keyword Effectiveness Index, with greater accuracy.

You could try this create a pivot table organized by competition score, group the competition numbers into groups - ten groups separated by .1 - then within those groups place the keywords, and sort the keywords by largest to smallest search volume. If I get a chance to play around with it, I'll try to create something for you in Excel.

Well, yeah. Specifically, what I'm looking for is a formula that will organize my export results with simultaneous lowest possible competition score per highest possible local monthly search. I want to find the happy medium between the two to assign some sort of cumulative score, and then arrange according to that.
It probably sounds like I'm looking for a silver bullet...I just have a lot of data to sift through.

I'm a bit confused by your question, because aren't the two different metrics. Search volume just shows the amount of searches (albeit rounded off) for a query. Competition & Approximate CPC shows value of a keyword to advertisers - a term may have very few searches a month but a high CPC due to its value for advertisers - exact match of personal injury lawyer in miami may be low, but competition and approximate CPC may be very high due to the value of these leads for lawyers in the personal injury space.
So do you think there is a relationship between search volume and competition/value of a keyword?

Keyword Planning and Site Architecture
Hi all, I'd like to know your thoughts on keyword planning and site architecture. I thought it was best practice to structure your website so specific pages target certain keywords. The titles, meta desc. and content on these pages should be unique to that page. I've had good success ranking pages this way. But! How come so often you'll see a website that has no keyword planning ranking so well? Let's take the example: "Bamboo Sheets". A top ranking website in my country sells all kinds of bamboo bedding, including sheets, towels, pillow cases, etc. They have "Bamboo Sheets" in the title & meta description for the main category page (www.store.com/bamboo-sheets) - which is where it should be. But then I see it again on the homepage title & meta (www.store.com) and other pages of the website. So why aren't they cannibalizing their own pages? And why do they blog about Bamboo Sheets and not cannibalize the keyword from there? Is landing page optimization just a myth? It seems entire websites built around a keyword rank just as well, and in most cases, much better than sites with keyword specific landing pages. If you only sell one product this isn't a problem, but for websites that offer multiple products or services, it's incredibly frustrating when trying to compete. It's like Google still gives a lot of authority to keyword rich domain names and business names. Thoughts?

Is it worth creating a page for misspelled keywords?
I had thought the answer to this was no with the way Google search corrects mispellings. But in Google webmaster tools queries for a page I see the page ranking for a misspelled keyword. And looking at Key Word Finder it tells me the search volume for that keyword is high. But, when I search for the keyword myself it Google it auto corrects the results to the correct spelling. Is it worth creating a page for misspelled keywords?

How many keywords per web page?
Hi, what is the technique for ranking for keywords? Can you optimise a web page for more than one keyword? My moz report is telling me that a keyword I want to rank for is not in the page title, as it stands my page title has one keyword phrase. Sorry for such a newbie question, my understanding is you home page carries the most weight, so you would place your most wanted keywords there? The big question is, how many keywords per page? David.

Need a keyword tool for the whole company
I alone cannot do keyword research on all of the online content that my company produces. There are about 10 publishing support teams who could do this research themselves, once trained, but I don't know which tool to suggest they use since they can't all use my MOZ login. Right now, those who do any research at all are using Google Trends. Wrong answer, but of course they are used to Trends for their social campaigns. Has your company dealt with this situation? I've looked at a few free keyword tools...each seems to have its plusses and minusses. **What would you recommend...either as a free tool or possible other workaround? **

Specific Keyword Ranking Advice
Hi Folks, We're trying to optimize the page (http://alabu.com/goat-milk-soap/) for the keyword "goat milk soap". Our page used to rank #1 before Panda (actually our home page did, not the page I'm trying to optimize on now). Now we're around rank 25. I've followed all the guidelines for on-page optimization I know, and I've done everything I can think of. We're currently executing a link building campaign but that obviously takes time. Does anyone have any advice? Is there anything else I can do to improve our ranking? Thanks, Hal

Best tool for drawing sitemaps?
Drawing up sitemaps is one of those tasks that seems to take me twice as long to do electronically that it does on paper. Unfortunately, sitemaps scribbled on sheets of A4 paper aren't much good for sending and sharing. So, Mozzers, what tool or software do you recommend for drawing up sitemaps quickly and easily? So far I've tried using Visio, Excel and Word but if there's a dedicated tool out there, that would be awesome. Thanks in advance, Cheers

Keyword and Keyphrases
I'm looking to optimise my website for some keywords and keyphrases I'm getting a bit confused on how different pages might compete (or help) each other. As we are an automotive dealer I was thinking about building the hompage around 4 keywords (one for each franchise we represent e.g 'Ford'). These show high local monthly searches and medium competition for just the manufacturer name on its own. Then if someone drills down into a franchise homepage (linked from our homepage e.g. www.ourwebsite.com/ford) I was thinking to optimise the page around e.g. 'Ford Dealer' (which has medium local monthly searches and high competition). Then if someone drills down into a particular model I optimise around that and so on. Question is will I be playing the franchise homepage vs the group homepage (Ford vs Ford Dealer) as I have read here on Keyword Cannibalization? Or will it work together? Alternative I guess is not to focus around a franchise on the group homepage and then only focus on the franchise from the franchise homepage onwards but I feel I would be missing a trick? As a new kid on the block help will be most appreciated.
