Is it normal to initially rank low in the SERPs, then over time gain rank?
-
We just released a very targeted page for a specific item about 18 hours ago.
For the main keyword as well as multiple variations, we currently are ranking around # 40 to # 50 depending on what the exact query is.
Is it normal to initially rank lower in the SERPs and then as the page ages, gain?
Thank you for your insights!

No, I rarely think about DA/PA. I just make content and toss it up. See what happens.
-
Excellent, good show.
The keywords we are trying to rank for, MOZ says it has a 28% difficulty, so I do not think we will need a 79/82 horsepower to rank on page 1 in a good position. I suspect that since DA is calculated on a log scale, the difficulty % is also probably logarithmic, so a 48% difficulty would take quite a lot more DA to rank, than just a linear interpolation would suggest for a 28% difficulty.
I wonder if you can approximate how much DA/PA it takes to rank at a given difficulty % - have you ever given thought to this?
-
The site above has a DA of 79 and the homepage has a PA of 82.
But, things work the same on another site that I run. It has a DA of 27 and a homepage PA of 37. It competes in an easier sleepier niche but articles on that site start deep and climb slowly over time.
-
Can I ask - what is your site's DA and PA average say for the homepage?
Thank you for your input, good job!

I really like this question. My answer is YES!
When I publish a new article and link it into my site it generally starts off very very deep in the SERPs. Too deep to pull big traffic for its primary keywords.... but because my articles are usually quite long (500 to 2000 words) with diverse terminology they do pull in some traffic for long tail keywords.
So, they start deep in the SERPs and then, over time, they V-E-R-Y S-L-O-W-L-Y climb the SERPs.
As an example, a little over a year ago, I published a new article targeting a keyword with a Moz difficulty of about 48%. That article started deep in the SERPs at about position #150. It hung there for a few weeks and then month by month it moved up a few places. About nine months later it was on the first page, and now about a year and a half later it ranks at #2 or #3.
For about three months it received fewer than ten visitors per day from the SERPs. At the same time it received only about twenty visitors per day from my internal traffic. Six months later it was receiving about 40 visitors per day from the SERPs and now it is receiving about 80 per day.
I did zero linkbuilding for this article. Just tossed it up and went to work on other things. So far it has attracted about six very good links and a lot of spam links. Not much. It has about 152 facebook likes, a dozen tweets but a lot of action for the photos on Pinterest.
In my opinion, the article is a good one, it has a number of nice professionally done photos and a few good external references, so people who click into it stay. I think that google through Chrome and SERP clickthroughs and backbuttons can determine if people respond well to the article and use that data to influence its rankings.
Most of the aritles that I write behave this way. A lot of them make the first page of google for keywords of similar difficulty, but before I write them I make sure that I am going to produce an article that deserves first page - or I don't write it. A few have been disappointments. I have one written at about the same time as the one above that seems to be stuck about three or four pages down in the SERPs, but it is about a subject that has a lot of contamination in the SERPs - such as Java (programming language, coffee, island, and assorted stuff).
So, yes, if you are seeing your content climb then you might be doing something right that you can scale over time.

@William - thank you for the response.
Very interesting indeed, it seems that they ramp in slowly, like a soft-start (if anyone is familiar with what I am talking about).
In any case, thank you for your time and response!
-
Yes, you will gradually start ranking better assuming you continue to optimize. Unless you are one of the authority sites in your space, it will take time to rank.

Really struggling with serps....
My website is only a week old or so but I have no pages showing on the serps or at least in the first few hundred results! I have many other hobby websites that had pages in the top 100 results instantly and the niche of this new website is tiny and not saturated so it should be up there already! All pages are indexed but non showing in the results. it feels like I have been penalised or something but I don’t see how or why? my website is www.magnet-fishing.co.uk of anyone can see anything obvious that I am missing regards Andy

Page Rank Worse After Optimization
For a long time, we had terrible on page SEO. No keyword targeting, no meta titles or descriptions. Just a brief 2-4 sentence product description and shipping information. Strangely, we weren't ranking too bad. For one product, we were ranking on page 1 of Google for a certain keyword. My goal to reach the top of page 1 would be easy (or so I thought). I have now optimized this page to rank better for the same keyword. I have a 276 word description with detailed specifications and shipping information. I have a strong title and meta description with keywords and modifers. I have also included a video demonstration, additional photos and an PDF of the owners manual. In my eyes, the page is 100% better than it ever was. In the eyes of MOZ, it's better also. I've got an A with the On-Page Grader. Why is this page now ranking on page 8 of Google? What have I done wrong? What can I do to correct it?

Low on Google ranking despite error-free!?
Hi all, I'm following up on a recent post i've made about our indexing and especially ranking problems in Google: http://moz.com/community/q/seo-impact-classifieds-website Thanks to all good comments we managed to get rid of most of our crawl errors and as a result our high priority /duplicated content decreased from +22k to 270. In short, we created canonical urls, run an xml sitemap, used url parameters in GWT, created h1 and meta description for each ad posted by users etc. I then used google fetch a few times (3 weeks ago and last week) both for desktop and mobile version for re-approval. Nothing really improves in google rankings (all our core keywords are ranked +50)since months now: yet yahoo and bing organic traffic went up and is 3x higher than google's. In the meanwhile we're running paid campagins on facebook and adwords since months already to keep traffic consistent, yet this is eating up our budget, even though our ctr and conversion rates are good. I realize we might have to create more content on-site and through social media, but right now our social media traffic is already around 50% and we are using more of twitter and google+ as well since recently. Our organic traffic is only 14%; with google only a third of that. In the end, I believe this breakdown should look more something like organic 50%-70%, (paid)social, referral and direct traffic. 50%-30%... I can't believe we are hit by a penalty although this looks like it is the case. Especially while yahoo and bing traffic goes up and google does not. Should I wait for a signal once our site is "approved" again through GWT fetch? Or am i missing something that i need to check as well to improve these rankings? Thanks for your help! Ivor ps: ask me for additional stats or info in a pm if needed!

Rankings Dropped
Hello, I wonder if anyone can point us in the right direction. Our main domain name has got a good SEO profile the domain is 12 years old and we have some good reputable links. On the 7th of Jan our website dropped in the rankings from 3rd to 10th for one of our main keywords and from then onwards some of our other keywords have dropped. We have a lot of landing pages that target specific keywords which look like a template page but just with the content changed. Can anyone pin point what could of caused this problem or has anyone experienced this before and knows how to fix it. I personally think we have been hit by the panda. Thanks, Scott

How to increase rankings?
I know to increase rankings involves link building, but what kind of link building is worth it and what type is not? At the moment most of my link building effort is focused on guest blogging, which has worked well for me, I have seen some good movement on a range of keywords using this tactic but I cant help but think I could get a lot more movement in the serp's if I mixed it up a little. A few other link building techniques I know of are below, but I don't really use them, so my question is what ones should I be using combined with my guest blogging to give my rankings that little extra help. 1. Directory Submissions 2. Article Submissions 3. Press Release Distribution 4. Forum Signatures 5. Blog Comments 6. Social bookmarking 7. Social Sites (Squidoo, Weebly, Wordpress, blogger) If I have missed something please let me know. Cheers

Triple listing in rankings
We have a triple listing for the keyword vca cursus (Dutch keyword). But the page we optimized for that keyword ranks lower than our vca examen page. First we had the number one spot but now we rank 2 to 5. In opensite explorer i compared the competiton and we scored on almost all factors better. Do you know the causes why the vca examen page ranks higher then the vca cursus page. Is it possible to change that or reverse the triple listing somehow. And why does our competitor ranks higher?

Rank went up, But?
ok, I have been optimizing a sit for a while and decided to drop the flash site build an HTML site instead for obvious reasons. But, as I was building the new site, BANG! a big jump in Google rank? How can this be, I thought out loud. Must be all my anchor text kicking in...So, I am left with this question...Or did google pick up on my new site as I was building it. I build it on a new DNS, then revert back to the main DNS... Drop the HTML site and continue my link getting with the main site? Or chalk it up under something else and roll with new site. I hope that was not to confusing
