Canonical vs Alternate for country based subdomain dupe content?
-
What's the correct method for tagging dupe content between country based subdomains?
We have:
mydomain.com // default, en-us
www.mydomain.com // en-us
uk.mydomain.com // uk, en-gb
au.mydomain.com // australia, en-au
eu.mydomain.com // europe, en-eu
In the header of each we currently have rel="alternate" tags but we're still getting dupe content warnings in Moz for the "WWW" subdomain.
Question 1) Are we headed in the right direction with using alternate? Or would it be better to use canonical since the languages are technically all English, just different regions. The content is pretty much the same minus currency and localization differences.
Question 2) How can we solve the dupe content between WWW and the base domain, since the above isn't working.
Thanks so much

Yes.

Thanks.
So then I am safe when including all of these on every subdomain?
I have a common header where the above is the exact same for every subdomain (all 4 are always included), which I assume is the correct way?
Also: Why doesn't Moz look at the hreflang tag? I'm very worried about just "ignoring" what the tool says... why is the top SEO tool in the world not capable of correctly detecting dupe content? I'm not sure I'm comfortable with just ignoring the check engine light, so to speak.

In cases like yours, using the hreflang is the correct way to handle the duplicate content issue, because of the characteristics you yourself cite: currency and localization, which may be tiny differences in terms of "content" but huge in terms of usability and making completely different a product page from another.
Remember that if you canonicalize all the "duplicate" toward the canonical, the canonicalized URLs won't be shown in the countries you're targeting with those URLs... so screwing up the international SEO strategy 100%, so each URL must have as canonical its own URL (self referential), apart the obvious canonicalization rules being applied (e.g.: url with parameter canonicalized to url without parameter).
In case the URL is canonicalized for whatever reason, remember to indicate the canonical URLs in the href of the hreflang annotations. On the contrary Google will start alerting of no-return URLs errors.
Regarding the Moz Pro crawler... don't pay attention to it, because it doesn't consider the hreflang annotation, therefore it will continue saying that those pages are duplicate.

Content change within the same URL/Page (UX vs SEO)
Context: I'm asking my client to create city pages so he can present all of his appartements in that specific sector so i can have a page that ranks for "appartement for rent in +sector". The page will present a map with all the sector so the user can navigate and choose the sector he wants after he landed on the page. Question: The UX team is asking if we absolutly need to reload the sector page when the user is clicking the location on the map or if they can switch the content within the same page/url once the user is on the landing page. My concern: 1. Can this be analysed as duplicate content if Google can crawl within the javascript app or if Google only analyse his "first view" of the page. 2. Do you consider that it would be preferable to keep the "page change" so i'm increasing the number of page viewed ?

Subdomain redirect
Hey guys, I was thinking about creating subdomains for one of my websites. I want to divide my website in different subdomains (blog.[site].com / directory.[site].com / etc.) but I'm afraid that this will negatively impact my rankings. My blog for example has a lot of supporting content for my products and services that are primarily hosted on the homepage. Have you guys ever created subdomains at a later stage of your website's existence? What kind of impact did you notice? Would you recommend it? Thanks a million!

Duplicate content question...
I have a high duplicate content issue on my website. However, I'm not sure how to handle or fix this issue. I have 2 different URLs landing to the same page content. http://www.myfitstation.com/tag/vegan/ and http://www.myfitstation.com/tag/raw-food/ .In this situation, I cannot redirect one URL to the other since in the future I will probably be adding additional posts to either the "vegan" tag or the "raw food tag". What is the solution in this case? Thank you

After I 301 redirect duplicate pages to my rel=canonical page, do I need to add any tags or code to the non canonical pages?
I have many duplicate pages. Some pages have 2-3 duplicates. Most of which have Uppercase and Lowercase paths (generated by Microsoft IIS). Does this implementation of 301 and rel=canonical suffice? Or is there more I could do to optimize the passing of duplicate page link juice to the canonical. THANK YOU!

A problem with duplicate content
I'm kind of new at this. My crawl anaylsis says that I have a problem with duplicate content. I set the site up so that web sections appear in a folder with an index page as a landing page for that section. The URL would look like: www.myweb.com/section/index.php The crawl analysis says that both that URL and its root: www.myweb.com/section/ have been indexed. So I appear to have a situation where the page has been indexed twice and is a duplicate of itself. What can I do to remedy this? And, what steps should i take to get the pages re-indexed so that this type of duplication is avoided? I hope this makes sense! Any help gratefully received. Iain

Subdirectories vs subdomains
Hi SEO gurus 🙂 Anyone has input on what's better? blog.domain.com vs domain.com/blog store.domain.com vs domain.com/store etc I think the subdir (/xyz) will concentrate authority on the same subdomain so should be better? However sometimes it is tidier on the server to maintain online stores or blogs in a separate strucutre so subdomains work better in that sense. I just want to make sure that doesn't affect SEO? Cheers!

How do I combat content theft?
A new site popped up that has completely replicated a site own by my client. This site is literally a copycat, scraped all the content, and copied the design down to the colors. I've already reported the site to the hosting provider and filled a spam report on Google. I noticed that the author changed some of the text, and internal links so that they don't link to our site anymore. Some of these were missed. I'm also going to take a couple preventative actions like change stuff in .htaccess, but that doesn't help me now, just in case it happens again in the future. I'm wondering what else i can or should be doing?
