How to find keywords specific to local area
-
Hey everyone, new to this game, but been working hard to learn, have a website for an independant insurance broker in Northern Ireland, I have been using adwords and insights to try find good keywords to build his site around. But really struggling to find any keywords which people in Northern ireland are searching for, that are not in high competition.
Anyone give me a pointer how i could better identify the keywords i seek

Hi Stephen,
Thanks for using Q&A for your very good question. The trouble is that unless your business is in a true metropolitan location (think Los Angeles) keyword research tools are unlikely to show you helpful geographic terms. This has been a problem with Local SEO since day 1.Most of my colleagues in Local agree that you should follow a process something like this:
-Use tools like the G Adwords Keyword Tool and Insights to identify your basic service/product keywords.
-
Make a list
-
Take out your plurals and odd spellings
-
This will get you down to your core list...in your case, things like Health Insurance, Automobile Insurance, Automobile Insurance Company, Accident Insurance firm or what have you.
-
Now go in and add your geographic terms (city names, regional names, county names, neighborhood names, postal codes, etc.) to your core terms.
-
Now add back in plurals (companies vs. company etc.)
-
Now you have a very big list because you've got Automobile Insurance Company Belfast, Personal Liability Insurance Belfast, Automobile Insurance Newcastle, Personal Liability Insurance Newcastle, etc.
This is basically how it's done, and it tends to work quite well. Good luck!
Miriam

I'm finding it difficult to make a decision on keywords to select to target for new site?
Hi, I'm doing keyword research for a small site and followed the standard keyword process of using Ahrefs and Google's keyword planner tools to see what keywords are being searched for my service. There are keywords that have a higher avg monthly search volume but they are aren't as relevant as ones that include the word cheap or affordable for example but those ones are only 300 monthly searches per month which seems very small for the main page of the site. Any advice what I should do in this scenario? Do I choose a more relevant keyword with lower search volume or go for one with much higher avg monthly search volume which is much more competitive?

Keyword optimisation
I have a few questions regarding keywords that we are wanting to optimize on our site. This may be a bit basic so if this had already been answered elsewhere let me know. Question 1: How many time can I refer to the one word on different pages on the site ? Is there any rules around this? In theory the keywords we are looking to include will be relevant to these pages. **Question 2: ** Should I use different variation of the key word or is the one variant fine? Question 3: Looking at the search terms people use from google analytics to get to our site, there is a lot of people using the phrase “sliding windows New Zealand. Should I write this on the page exactly as “sliding doors New Zealand “ or is “sliding doors” fine? Its just that the former phrase doesn't really work with our communication. I look forward to your advice!

Keyword Research (dash or no dash)
I have a client that has been optimizing for "print and apply" for the past 5 months. Yesterday they decided it was more grammatically correct to use "print-and-apply." There question to me was "is this going to effect our SEO?" So... I checked the difficulty using the keyword analysis tool, both keywords had the same broad/exact adwords traffic as well as difficulty percentage. When reviewing the top 25 listings for each keyword it looks like the same sites rank in the SERPs between 1-8 and then after that it is completely different. So, is there a better keyword to target? Are these two keywords different enough to truly have separate search results?

The top 8 results didn't even target "print-and-apply" in there content or title tags... Thanks for the input/discussion - Kyle0 -
Is there a better keyword tool than google's adwords keyword tool?
I have heard a lot of people say not to trust the results of google adword's keyword tool. Is there a better tool out there that i am not aware of that can judge local monthly and global monthly search volume?

Evaluating Competition of a Keyword
I'm curious about how others evaluate the competition of keywords when putting together an SEO program: Do you place any faith in the competition listing in the Google Keyword Tool? Do you find value in SEOmoz's Keyword Difficulty tool? What other tactics or processes do you perform?
