Best Practices For Keyword Optimization
-
Hey currently building a new page on a clients site in the weight loss niche. The keywords he wants to rank for are the following:
<colgroup><col width="198"> <col width="64"></colgroup>
| [fat burning foods] | 49500 |
| [foods that burn fat] | 22200 |
| [fat burning foods for women] | 2900 |
| [belly fat burning foods] | 2900 |
| [best fat burning foods] | 1900 |
| [fat burning foods for men] | 1900 |
| [list of fat burning foods] | 720 |His site is new, but he has excellent content production capabilities.
My question is, in terms of optimizing the page (the title and url) for these keywords would you focus on the highest volume keyword.
In this case the highest volume keyword is "fat burning foods" however is the most competitive and dominated by high domain authority sites (50+ vs. clients site which is around 30). Thus its highly unlikely he will rank for that keyword for quite a while.
But for the keyword term "best fat burning foods" the competition is alot less in terms of DA and other factors but volume is smaller with 1900 hits a month.
So would you optimize the page (the title and url) for "best fat burning food" or would you optimize thinking about the long-term and eventually ranking the keyword "fat burning foods".
My thinking would be to optimize the page for "fat burning foods". And that the benefits of optimizing (url and title) for "best fat burning foods" isn't ideal for the long-run.
Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Mark

Hi,
Like some mentioned in their answers, you should mix and match.
I would use the keyword that you want to rank for in the end (the competitive keyword) as URL and Titles and use the less competitive keywords in the content. If you use the keywords you don't want to rank for in the end in your URL and etc., once the website has been around and start getting daily visitors, I don't think you want to change the URL to the more competitive keyword.

Can your client's business survive the next year or two with little or no traffic while you go after the big keywords? I'm guessing no. 100 actual visitors a month is better than 10,000 theoretical visitors that never materialize. Start out targeting attainable keywords. Once those are secure and your client is getting decent traffic, move on to more challenging keywords.

I usually start optimizing for the long tails (many time the competitive kw is in the long-tail phrase) before competitive keywords. What is crucial (as you know) is having a compelling landing pages and begin building the funnels to these pages.

Mix and match Mark, mix and match, especially for highly competitive KW's.

Keywords moving up, except...
The keywords on my page are moving up, except for one. I have routinely ranked between 13-15 for one particular keyword. I am aware that it is a broad term, however, at one point, I showed up on page one at #6, and then dropped right back down to where I was. The website it "sexaddict.com" and, don't worry, it's for addicts so you won't find anything but help and resources there. The keyword is "sex addiction." Thanks, Ryan

A question about local longtail keywords
Hello all. This is my first interaction with SEOmoz, and I am still in my learning phases. I currently own a lawn fertilization company near Allentown, PA. I do the site for myself, and I am ranked number one for organic lawn care for my cities. My question may seem kind of elementary, but I just want to clear this up for myself. I want to start a side business doing SEO, and from what I gather step one is keyword research. I plan on building new sites to start as opposed to going in and fixing existing ones. So, I've been reading a lot on how to do keyword research and so forth. I will use my current business as a reference for my question. Should my main keywords be along the lines of "lawn care" and "lawn services", and then the location specific stuff be seperate? Or should my main keywords be "lawn care allentown, pa"? I plan on running my business solely for local businesses, so I am not to interested in competing with the entire world for keywords. I just wasn't sure how to differentiate my keyword research for local business. I hope that question made some sense. I am really starting to grasp the elements of SEO, but for some reason the keyword part of things perplexes me. Thanks for any responses!

Long Tail Keyword Research
Hi, I have read lots of articles on long tail keyword research and all of it seems to apply to models and makes, i.e. "Canon power shot digital _camera _2MP" However, I work in the interior design industry, which doesn't have models and makes, if you see what I mean. Does anyone have any advice on how to do long tail keyword research for this sector or similar? Thanks for your help. Mik

My site fell off the serps for two keywords I tried to optimize the home page for
I was doing some keyword research about 45 days ago and stumbled across two keywords that I was ranking in the mid hundreds and decided I wanted to see if I could rank them. I went in and changed my title to my blog, and the description. Then about a week later I changed my mind and wanted to go for two other keywords so I changed it again. Then within a day or two, my site completely fell off the serps for those two key words that I changed the title to optimize for. None of my other rankings were effected for any of the other keywords, in fact most of my keywords have risen because of recent backlinking. I thought it was just a temporary google bounce because I was playing with my title of my blog or something, but after almost two months I am still nowhere to be found for words that I should easily at least be in the top 1000, especially because I was at about 150 by accident. Anyone have any ideas on what might have happened? Thanks.
